Gabi (My girl of a breeding pair) was over a a friends house, due to the fact I was there. I had to go to work. Everything was ok Friday-Tuesday. She was happy, babies where happy, Skeeter (the Male of the pair) was Happy. This cage is great. I checked EVERYTHING to make sure there was nothing she could get caught on, Everything was safe, and All the water and food she normal would get at home.

Wednesday I am about to get off work and I get a call.
Friend- "Gabi, Was sitting on the bottom of the cage. I opened it to give her a treat."
(I am cool with that, I said that would be ok.)
Friend- "She isn't using her back legs!"
Me- "WHAT?"
Friend- "She isn't walking with her back legs and is just dragging them!"
(He was upset. He loves them as much as me, plus he is getting their twin boys.)
(I get off of work. Which with my luck Waco(my city) I working on the streets I have to take. I get there and Gabi's back legs aren't working. They are reacting to me picking her up and I put her in the bonding pouch. Got her kids and Skeeter.)

I get to the vet. After a Wait that feels like forever.(I was pacing.) She (vet) looks at gabi and checks the reactive ability of the back legs. She sees some movement and gabi moves them a little bit. The vet gave me a Steroid and a Pain drug.

I put her in my secondary/travel cage. I put a pouch on the bottom with a piece of fleece for her to sit/lay on. Food, Water, and a yogi or 3.

I am SO upset. Have any of ya'll had this happen? Any advice or tells of this happening will help. Both with figureing out what happened and my nerves. I think I just might flip out.

Oh I'm sure the medicine will help. Have you been giving her more calcium during her pregnancy. Maybe up the dose on that right now too just in case. It may be that she fell and her back legs are shocked? This happened to my male once and he didn't use his leg for a week, but then he was fine. Keep a close watch on her and give her extra cuddles so she knows she's safe and won't hurt the babies. If anything looks worse or if the meds aren't working go back to the vet and try something else. Good luck.

[:"green"]Paralysis of the hind legs is a definite indicator of Calcium Deficiency (a.k.a. Hind Leg Paralysis). Please, have your vet run a test of her calcium levels. She can die very quickly from Hind Leg Paralysis (HLP) if not treated. If treated with calcium supplements, you may be able to reverse HLP and save her. It is very important that you get her back in to your vet's office ASAP and get the calcium levels checked. My first two gliders died from HLP 5 years ago because I didn't know about calcium insufficiency, and neither did my vet. He thought it was an infection & treated it as such. They died within 2 weeks of each other. It was only after their deaths that I found out through a lot of research that HLP was the actual cause of death.

[:"green"]It is important to not only up her calcium intake, but also to get her checked by a vet. The vet should have a calcium supplement you can give to her that will get into her system faster. Also, close monitoring of her calcium level by the vet is imperative at this point since you don't want to go to the other extreme and give her too much calcium.
Continuing to pray for Gabi

[:"green"]Here is a great link with a lot of valuable information about HLP... Please check it out. Read it completely, then print it out & take it with you to the vet's...

A friend of mine's glider got HLP. The vet gave her injections for Calcium and she got back to normal, but she had to get several injections. I think it is good advice to get her back to the vet ASAP. Good luck! Keep us posted.

What diet do you have her on? It's very important that you follow one of the proven diets which can be found here.

I agree with Suz that she needs to get back to the vet, but can you find a glider specific vet? If the vet you went to didn't recognize HLP, he hasn't had much experience with gliders. I think the vet will be able to give injectable calcium which is better/faster than trying to get it into her system through diet. Her levels need to be monitored. Even if you can't find another vet, the one you went to should be able to do what needs to be done once he/she's pointed in the right direction.

By the way, welcome to GC! Good luck, and now that you've found us, please look around and read more. There's lots to learn about keeping gliders, but diet is the most important.

I dont know what he has them on now... But these were originally Mike Mcgrath gliders on a cat food diet until they were 6 months old... They were then fed BML for a year or so, and then i had them and they were on Priscilla's diet until Fred bought them from me.

How fast can HLP happen? Could this be effects from being on a cat food only diet until she was 6 months old?

And Fred, if you took her to a vet and all they did was give you pain killers, perhaps try a different vet this time. HLP is VERY common with gliders, i would think any vet that treats gliders should know about it and at least mention it to you while you were having her checked out. Maybe the vet did know about it but thought it was more along the lines of "she fell and hurt herself?"

I wish you luck! Poor Gabi! I hope she is ok!

Correct me if I am wrong, but bacterial infections can also cause HLP. Main thing is this glider needs to get back in to see a knowledgeable vet or a vet that is willing to consult with other glider experience vets.

Just upping the calcium in your diet probably isn't going to make this little one get better. I'd take the glider back in to find out what (lack of calcium, infections) is causing the lack of movement in her back legs and go from there.

Keeping this little one is my thoughts and hoping the vets can help you

Kristin is correct...HLP is most often secondary to an infection that is really going on. Hopefully Judie will be along soon to offer more advice on this for you.

Gabi is now been to the vet 2 times. First for the meds and this time I asked for a blood test and different meds. Gabi wouldn't take ANYTHING... She smelled the water, She smelled the food, ETC. if it was anything but the normal...Be Gone...

Now I got a rub that does the same plus helps with the Calcium and HLP stuff. The vet is referencing ANYTHING that she might second guess on herself. Best thing is her assistain (both of which live there) has a SUGGIE... So she know the BIT THE HAND THAT HEALS thing.

Since the Blood is still being testes, She thing it may have been Zeek. Who didn't want to wein off of momma.

These are all still able to change. and I will keep ya'll informed.

Oh yeah, I have been feeding them Pricilla's diet... With a little more calcium lately due to this illness.

Thanks for all the Hopes and Well Wishes

My vet (Dr. LuAnn Ervin) Says she is happy with gabi's inprovment. She(Gabi) Is hanging aroung the travel cage I have. Have you ever seen a Suger Glider climb around a cage with just it's front legs. She has been ALL OVER this poor cage. I will try to get my sister's camera and get a picture.

Blood work sould be back Wed or Thur but the great injection that she gave to Gabi has realy perked her up.

Texas A&M puts out some good vets. I met Dr. Gary Gozney Years ago and will take ALL MY DOGS to him. If he was closer I would take my Suggies too. BUT I found Dr. Ervin and she has been GREAT with Gabi. I will take all my Suggies to her.

Ok that is the latest on "Gabi Watch '05" Now back to you in the studio...

To me, it sounds like HLP (hind leg paralisys). That's a sign that she is not getting enough calcium. I don't know much about it, since we've never had it here. I do not know anything about recovery from HLP. I'd go back to the vet, tho, and suggest lack of calcium. Wish I could help more.
