Tinkerbell's mom--thank you for the vet information. I just made an appointment but the earliest they could see her is tomorrow afternoon. I'm going to try to find someone today if possible.

I'm very sorry to hear about your glider. I've only had mine for 2 weeks and I'm just upset at the thought of her being sick--and amazed at how attached you become so quickly. Do you know why she passed? Anything I should be aware of or bring to the vets attention? Mine has not been playful for the last 2 days but I was assuming it was because of the "non-biting" technique they told me to use and that she was traumatized and angry.

I just submitted a letter (see below) to Oprah on her website.

I think that if enough people sent in info that she would do the story! So write in everyone!!! PS - you can only use 2000 characters to submit online so I had to remove several lines that I originally had in my letter. I decided not to give them the name of the mill breeder just because I am by far not the most knowledgeable on this subject - but I almost bought suggies from (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets and had several contacts with them (via email & phone). If by chance I hear from the Oprah show - I will be contacting you experienced owners out there to help me smile How did my letter sound?

Letter I submitted:
Sugar Gliders are becoming increasingly more popular as domesticated pets. They bond well with their humans but do require very specific diet and living requirements - not hard to do - just takes educating yourself. The problem here is that there are "mill breeders" that are taking advantage of the increasing popularity and are breeding the sugar gliders by the thousands and are not taking good care of them (dare I say cruelty) but they are allowing in-breeding to occur which only causes health problems. They go to any public flea market, fair, gun show, etc that they can get into and try to sell them for alot more than one can buy them for from a reputable breeder, they pull them away from their moms at MUCH too young of an age but tell the new owner that they are much older, they give lots of false info on how to take care of them, thus drawing in that "impulse" buyer who then gets home with the little suggie and then realize that this little animal is alot more work than they thought. Many people at that point then try to get rid of them - if the sugar glider doesn't die from some type of health problem first. Sugar gliders have a life expectancy of 12-15 years - many of them coming from these "mill breeders" are lucky to make it a year. There are LOTS of people out there that this has happened to. I'm not sure the best way to find them - but I would start with the forums which I can give you the info. If these companies (mainly one big one) aren't stopped then thousands of sugar gliders are going to be mistreated just so they can make a buck. With your help we can educate people out there so that hopefully they would not make the mistake of impulse buying one of these likely inbred sugar gliders and therefore will force this company to either start doing things the right way or put them out of business. I can and will gladly give you any info you need to get this story out. Please help! Thanks, Heidi

For Frederick Fair's "(PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets"customers:

We also have another great vet in Frederick:

"Dr. Gale" Savino-Eason (in Super Pets on the Golden Mile)
1275 W. Patrick st.
301 620-9600

For neutering:
I am working with a couple local vets in an attempt to get better prices on neutering because of the Mill Breed gliders from (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets & Todays Pets!
I'm hoping they can cut me a deal if I refer some of my own new parents, as well as (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets's customers to them, since I have been working with so many.

I will post as soon as we reach an agreement.

(Sorry for not being able to get back on here sooner. I have been sooo busy with the Frederick Fair's customers).

My vet says that neutering a glider is very similar to neutering a cat. They shouldn't be charging a fortune to do so. They only charge it because they are exotics and think they can get away with it....sad.

That's correct. It is no harder to desex a sugar glider as it is any other regularly desexed animal (rabbit, cat, etc) They just charge what people are willing to pay. So if people are paying the large amount, there is a market for it. They will continue to desex at this ridiculous price. Desexing should be made cheaper to prevent people without a strong understanding of genetics from breeding. Then there wouldn't be these health issues.

I see where you put "desex". Please understand that females should not be spayed unless there is urgent medical need for it. With gliders, it is so invasive and gliders are prone to self mutilation. This combined with their small size and unique physiology makes spaying females extremely risky. It is MUCH safer to have the males neutered.

Peggy recently told me that it's likely the vets charge so much for the stuff because though they are capable of doing it, they don't want to (which makes complete sense to me!)
