Late last night I arrived back in town to pick up my babies: Dexter and Dezee. It was a cold night and somebody at the babysitters house decided to leave the window wide open. I had a bad feeling right when I walked into the room, the room was quite cold, but worst of all it was dead quiet. Dexter was hanging on the outside of the pouch. I reached in to grab him but there was no response. I immediately knew things had turned for the worse. Dezee was inside the pouch all rolled up. I was able to revive Dexter, but I wasn't able to bring back Dezee. She was quite a bit smaller and younger compared to Dexter. I believe her body temperature had dropped more rapidly than Dexter. She showed signs of coming around, but it was too late. She passed in my hands approximately ten minutes after I found her. Dezee was relatively new to the family. My girlfriend bought her after I felt that Dexter needed a companion besides me. Although she only stayed with me for a couple of months, I will never forget her energy and feistiness. She was just coming around and beginning to bond with me. I'm sure my other sugar glider that I lost, Pinky is with Dezee now. Dexter misses her a lot also, all day today he didn't really sleep. He was happy to see me again but I am certain he's wondering where Dezee is. I was lucky to be able to revive Dexter, if another 10 minutes had passed the circumstances could have been different. I can't help but wonder if I could have done things differently, I immediately warmed them in my hands and turned on the small portable heater I had. I even had some hot water in a bottle and wrapped it up in a towel in an attempt to bring her body temperature back up. I hope whoever reads this will take into consideration that our little friends have a very delicate bodies. I've owned sugar gliders for over a year now, but nothing could have prepared me for what happened last night. Please close your windows and wear that extra sweater to keep your little friend warm.

Oh - I'm so sorry! I know you're heartbroken and I am too, reading your post. Thank God you still have Dexter! These wee ones are so delicate at times, so resilient at others. There was nothing more you could have done and I'm so glad Dezee was with you during her last minutes. You do know about Rainbow Bridge, don't you? It's a great place and Dezee and Pinky will be there, waiting for you and Dexter to join them. I hope your heart can heal quickly, as well as Dexter's. He wil need you more than ever now! I'll be thinking of you.......

Thank you for reading my post and giving me support during these difficult times. I just felt the need to let people know what happened to my Dezee. I lost Pinky last year to a toilet mishap. I never posted anything for Pinky and as a result her loss still lingers to this day. Hopefully, I am able to handle the loss better by telling people that have owned a sugar glider. How many sugar gliders do you have? By the way, I have a Vietnamese pot bellied pig named Squiggly. Could'nt help but notice that you mentioned you have a pig.

Oh, I am so sorry. What a sad story. I'm very, very sorry this happened. Thank you for sharing it with us and for reminding us of the need to keep gliders in warm temperatures. Please know we're here and want to help ease your grief any way possible -- again, I am so sorry.

Howitzer - I have 2 gliders now. Rachel is only 3 mos old. Bugsy is about 5 yrs. Albert is also a Vietnamese pot bellied pig. His 10th birthday was 3/1/03. I'm sure it was sad losing Pinky - I'm so sorry. You will never forget either Dezee or Pinky and that is a good tribute to them! It is a 24/7 issue with these little ones - there are so many dangers out there for them. We have to try and cover all the bases, sometimes one slips past us. Sad but true. So, give Dexter some extra lovin' to help him through the loss with you - I'm sure he misses Dezee too.

I hate reading these sad stories but they really do help in the future. I'm getting my gliders in a few days and I will be sure never to let it get too cold.
Also it's makes he happy that they both didn't die but still sad because one did.

Howitzer, I'm soooooo sorry about Dezee. It's so hard to hear about losing one of these precious creatures! You can still post Pinky's story here if you'd like. It might help you heal. Your story is an awesome reminder tho about how fragile these babies can be. Hugs!
