if anyone out there has had an experience with a joey being eaten, please tell me what to do. i woke up this morning at 6:30am and checked on my baby glider who has been feeling a little under the weather since we had moved only to see his mangled body tore to pieces by his parents. i had called an emergency vet yesterday who had suggested i put a warm compress on him and then last night he was back to sleeping with his parents. they were all doing fine. everyone was cuddling and it made me very happy. sometime between 12:30am and 6:30am the joey was demolished. i don't know what had happened since earlier that day he was up and playing with his momma glider. he has a twin brother that is fine but now i'm concerned that they may eat him, too. what is the standard procedure for dealing with the gliders that ate him? i am very distraught over all of this since everything was fine yesterday. i've raised many babies in the past and have never seen anything like this before. when i do a search online i am not getting any info on what to do with the gliders that did this. i'm concerned that i might have to have them put down even though i don't want to. please, if anyone has any info on how to deal with this and how to handle the gliders that did this, let me know. i'm very worried and am not sure what to do or even think at this point. By 4.5 months old, do you mean 4.5 months OOP? If so, this is a very odd situation, but I have a couple theories for you...

First, since it was a male joey, his father might have felt challanged for dominance and attacked the joey to save him spot in the family.

My second theory is that the joey passed away during the night and mommy and daddy were just trying to keep the next/cage clean by dispossing of the body the only way they know how to.

There are several other possibilities, but with a joey that old, those are the first 2 things that come to mind...

yeah, i meant oop. he was sick but was feeling much better yesterday morning and straight thru the night. there is his twin brother in the cage still, should i be worried? because the joey was sick, even though he was doing better, do i need to have the other gliders put down?

No you don't need to put them down but I'd certainly be getting them to the vet to make sure they are okay. Gee I'm so sorry for your loss. I just can't imagine waking up to that tragedy.

No, you don't need to put the other gliders down. What happened isn't a freak accident or bizzare behavior by the parents. It was a natural event, even if we don't understand the reasons behind it. You might want to consider putting the brother in his own cage. If it was a dominance issue, the brother may still be at risk. Gliders can hide their illnesses quite well, and though he may have seemed better last night, they crash very quickly. Even after medical care. I suggest taking the family in for a check-up, then putting brother in his own cage.

I agree with USMom, separate the little boy but please do NOT put your gliders down . Somebody correct me if I`m wrong but aren`t you supposed to separate the babies from the parents when they are old enough? I know adult gliders shouldn`t be in the cage with young gliders but not sure if thisd applies with parents and their own babies. I know a woman who had a glider around 3 months oop and other gliders killed the young one, she was too young to be with adults, but they weren`t her parents either.

Yes you are right...
a young female could be killed by her father trying to rape her or a young male could be killed by a dominant father so it suggested if you are going to keep gliders together like that to have the older male neutered.

I am sooo sorry you woke up to this!!It could have been a number of things just like others have suggested.I,like everyone else say don't put your other gliders down!Just have them checked out by your vet and if you want to keep the father and son together,i recommend having both boys neutered.

As to the separating from the parents, in the wild, the parents will kick the joeys out of the nest at about 5 months oop. This could have been the cause as well, since they can't kick them out of the cage.

I don't know but there are a lot of people that just get babies or dads neutered when the time comes and leave the family intact. My guess is that this had to do with the joey being sick. Honestly I'm no expert but this is the first time in all my years that I've heard of this happening. I'm just so sorry and strongly suggest a vet check for all gliders involved.

When you say the baby was sick, do you know what was wrong with him?
They may have thought he wasn't going to survive anyway and put him out of misery, sounds really horrible, but sick gliders, expecially small little ones don't have much chance once you see that they are sick.
I'm so sorry for your loss.

I have to agree with Carrie. More than likely due to the glider being sick, the parents disposed of him, or, even though he may have been up playing the last time you saw him alive, if he passed away, the other gliders will have tried to dispose of the body by consuming it.
Sorry you had to go through this, but no cause for alarm or thoughts of putting your other gliders down. I would recommend a vet visit for the others though. And removing the other male just in case it is a dominance issue.

4.5 weeks OOP, right? Well, this isn't normal persay, but it does happen. I'm sorry for your loss. I've never had it happen to me since I do not breed my gliders, but I'm sure others will be able to help you. Looks like you have a lot of good info here.

hi everyone. my fiance and i separated the other little glider. i've bred many gliders before and have kept the joeys in the cages with no complications. unfortunately, the male murdered the mother this morning while she was sleeping. my fiance found her split open in their bed. because this keeps happening, and the male had food still in his bowl, we came to the conclusion that there is obviously something wrong with thim. we buried the mother this morning, next to her son, and we pick up the male's body from animal control shortly. we were both very afraid that he would come after us after what happened this morning. the other gliders are afraid of him and they are in a separate cage on the far side of the room. we have the one joey left and we aren't sure if he will make it since he seems depressed. thank you to everyone for the advice. i appreciate it. please keep baby girl, satchel, junior, and the one surviving joey from the family in your hearts and minds. thanks again, everyone.

I take that to mean you had the male euthanized... That's such a pitty

I do have a question for you though, why would you be afraid that the glider is going to come after you? If it's agressive, it should be caged while you are asleep, which renders it harmless. While you are awake, I don't see any reason what so ever to fear a 4 ounce animal...

I agree with Leyna...what a shame The male should just be caged like all other gliders are.

beenthere, it sounds like there may have been something wrong with dad. I suggest taking the other gliders to the vet for a check-up in case it is something contagious. I wish you the best with them. Let us know.

Beenthere, I am so sorry to read everything that's happened to this point!!! Something had to have been going wrong with the male......have you set up an necropsy to help explain it? I sure would if I were in your shoes!

You & your suggies are in my prayers.

hi everyone, i just wanted to let you all know that the one baby that had survived is doing wonderfully!!! he has gained weight and the fur he was missing on his tail has grown back. his appetite is thriving and he has been drinking normally again. we have him in a smaller cage right now with a heating pad on the bottom so he can stay warm when we are asleep. he has been playful and as of last night has started to bark again(quietly but he's getting there). the other gliders we have are still upstairs and they are doing a little better. i think they are still freaked out about what had happened but they are actually coming out and playing now. i guess they don't feel so scared. they have their appetite back also and have been drinking their water more often then they were. wish us continued health with these little guys....so far all your thoughts of them are working!!!

I'm so sorry. I can't imagine having to go through that.

was the father always somewhat like this? if so, maybe you should neuter the remaining joey in case there is something genetically wrong what you don't want being passed on to a new generation, should he ever breed.
good luck with the joey, I hope he does well.
