is it a normal behavior for a glider to act "frozen?" today i was transferring our youngest from her sleeping pouch to her travel pouch and when she was about to switch pouches she "froze" up and quit moving. and her face and tail started twitching. when this happened i started petting her which didn't seem to phase her. this lasted for about 5 minutes. then eventually she snapped out of it and was running around the cage as usual. this has happened one other time when she ran up my back and she "froze" up and tumbled down the front of my shirt and i caught her. she wasn't using her front feet at all. our other glider has never done anything like this before. should i be concerned??

It's always good, if in doubt, to check it out with a glider-knowledgeable vet. Mine sometimes act like statues when they first wake up or if the lights are on (for Hiroshi), but they've never had any trouble using their front feet, especially if crawling up or down my body. She could have some imbalances going on that only a vet can determine. What diet do you have her on?

we have been feeding them a combination of diets that we have heard of. they get fresh fruit daily plus they get the zoo keepers secret as a staple diet. they also get baby food and/or yogurt. they also get the vitamin supliments provided by the company that we bought the zoo keepers secret from sprinkled over their food. she has always been a bit more "sensitive" than our other glider so maybe she was just startled both times.

Given her history, I would take her to the vet. I also recommend looking through the diet page and Suz’s site: Feeding Your Joeys & Adult Gliders. Captive gliders have specialized dietary needs and need the proper blend of nutrients (with protein, fruits, veggies, vitamins, and calcium). For some of the diets, you should be able to find all of the ingredients in a grocery store and pet store. Find one that will suit your lifestyle and your glider’s preferences. You'll want to follow whatever diet you choose, as outlined. Don't mix and match the various plans or ingredients or you'll throw off the overall calcium to phosphorus (Ca:P) ratios, as well as introduce other unhealthy imbalances. Their dietary needs are delicate, and it is definitely not advisable to offer a combination of diets. Each one is designed to be complete in itself. She could be getting an overdose or an underdose of needed nutrients. Her behavior does not sound normal. And even when startled, when a glider freezes, as soon as they unfreeze to move, they don't go limp or lose function in their extremities. With my crew, when they "wake up" and start moving, they are quite agile and fast as lightning! Please do take her to a vet and please keep us posted.

It sounds like a seizure to me. I experienced the same thing with my Sahara.

While I completely agree a new, balanced, proven diet is in order, could this have just been the snakey tail dance? My gliders often freeze when I walk in until they determine for sure it's me.

Once all pathologic causes have been ruled out...your suggie could be playing "possum" as some members on here call it...where they sort of freeze up!!

I had a female that did that and she was having seizures. Took her to the vet and couldn't find an obvious problem. She eventually stopped doing it. However 3 years later she passed away from brain cancer. Something the vet was totally confused about and had never seen before.

I would definitely say a vet check is in order. Losing the feeling in her front feet to make her tumble off of you is not normal. Anna

A seizing animal goes limp and goes into convulsions. If your glider was awake, but just still as a statue, it was probably just afraid and playing possum as others said. Maybe petting her just kept her in that position longer. A vet visit definately wouldn't hurt to be sure, especially since you seem concerned.

I agree about choosing a single diet plan and sticking with it, and also about seeing a glider knowledgeable vet about her problem. I have several gliders that will randomly go into "freeze mode", and then a minute or so later snap out of it, but they never fall or lose the ability to use their feet.

A seizing animal goes limp and goes into convulsions. Well, not always. When I took my Mishka in for her mating wound she had a severe seizure in the exam room; she was lethargic for a few seconds, kind of slowing down, then froze perfectly still and didn't move for nearly a minute. Little bubbles came out her mouth and nose, and the vet who saw it said right away, "She's having a seizure." She never went limp or convulsed, and was lethargic again for a couple more minutes before snapping back to her little active self. It certainly didn't look like any seizures I've seen in other animals, but that's what it was. I've seen mine go into "freeze mode" before too, when i startle them or when another one's barking, and the seizure was definitely different.

One kind they don't have rapid muscle movements and one kind they do. They are called grand mal (tonic clonic) and petite mal (absence).

Agreed, there are different kinds of seizures. My boy has had a couple of seizures and never went limp or had convulsions either. My dog used to have seizures also, he never convulsed either, just froze in place and you couldn't 'snap' him out of it. The best way to know if your glider is seizing (short of having a veterinarian witness it) is to describe the circumstances and behaviors the best you can and have testing done to rule out other problems.

I have one glider who if he is brought out of his rept, has fear seizures that are kinda like those "tipping goats" that when scared just fall over. Billy does that. He is perfectly fine in his rept, even if I crawl in there with him (it is a 260) and if I leave the rept unzipped, he won't come out on his own. He just likes to be where he is.
