Hi everyone! I have a sugar glider name sporky. The Question I have is for a friend. she has gliders. The female suggie keeps eating one of the babies. last time she ate one, my friend took the other away as soon as it turned gray. She raised him and he is find. To me it was a amazing that the little joey lived, but he did. Now the mother did it again with this litter. She ate one and We are so afraid for the other. As soon as it is old enough she plans on taking the little suggie and raising him on her own. She feeds the mother lots of proteins, fruits, baby food, glider aid, calcium. she gives vitamins. We can't understand why the glider mother keeps doing this. We both was in tears this morning to find the half eaten baby on the cage floor. The other Glider mom's have never did this, it is always this one. Can anyone please help with some advice.

I am so sorry for the little one you all have lost…. I have not dealt with joeys so I can not offer the best advice but sometime some gliders just do not make good parents…

A questions does she always eat one when there are two, and has she ever successfully raised a joey herself?

sounds like it may be a diet/milk problem. What diet is she on specifically? Is Dad caged with her? Does she crab or nip at the joeys ever before canibalizing? How many joeys has she had & how many has she eaten - over what period of time? It is possible that she was not producing enough milk, and that the joeys got weak or even sick. She would have eaten the sickly one as an instict to keep predators away. If the milk issue was not fixed, she would have continued to do this with each additional set of joeys.

These questions may help us figure out what's going on with this Mama!

hi she has had 5 litters. She has raised one joey out of each litter. 4 times She knows their was 2 joey's and once their was only 1.So yes she eats one each time. The male glider was not in the cage. She is getting meat, fruit, and vegt. baby food. she gets dehydrated fruit and fresh fruit. glider pellets. glider milk replacer. She mixes this all up together and the mother gets as much as she wants fresh everyday. The joey seem to be well. they move around, they squeak. They seem to grow as good rate. We are really upset. I have my sporky the one she raised when it was just turning gray she took him away. she as afraid the mother would eat him too. any advice would help. thanks so much!

What kind of meat are you offering???

It may be a nutrition thing, it sounds like you have most of the ingredients but you may not be offering them in the suggested amounts, do you / she stick to a proper diet plan, you can research the generally accepted diet Plan here

Ok, first of all, she needs to get ALL her gliders on a proven diet - go to GC links (in the top lefthand corner of the screen) then go to diet links. I personally feed BML, but right now, just get them on a PROVEN diet! VERY IMPORTANT.

Next, why isn't the male housed with the Mama? The male needs to stay with Mom to help take care of the joeys. He babysits so she can go eat, etc... If she can't go eat, then she can't produce milk, then the babies starve, get weak, and she eats them...see where all this is going?

Also, she needs to think about the stress toll that all these botched pregnancies are taking on the Mama - it may be best just to have Daddy neutered. Either way, GET THEM ON A PROVEN diet!

Please stick around & let us help you get these lil ones on the right track, also please invite your friend to join us as well!

The meats she feeds are chicken, Turkey, veal, beef. She has the pellets the gliders aways have. She feeds them 1/3 protein. (meat) a day. she also keep booster pellets in the cage at all times and the female glider does eat them. I don't think it is a food problem. she raised my glider sporky before his eyes were open. it was amazing that he lived. she has have gliders for 5 years and this is the only Glider that eats one of it babies. helpppppppppp!!!!!! thanks for any advice. our hearts broke this morning!

The male is kept in the the cage with her, but she was afraid it was him eating the babies. so she took him out. Then she found out it wasn't the male that ate the babies. It was the mother that did it.

Also I failed to tell you the babies are not out of the pouch yet. They are still pink. She would of put male back after they were past the age of getting ate. I did email that page to her on diet. I also am going to read it. Thanks for any advice.

are they pet store pellets? these are generally not reccomended. I personally believe that the diet may be the the issue, but if you are confident that there is no way it is the diet then there are a few other reasons.. one being she is stressed out because she doesn't have help with the joeys, she may think that one is all she can handle. the daddy NEEDS to be in the cage in order to help her care for the joeys. Also, there are some gliders who will reject and no one can figure out why. Your friend needs to do the following n order to prevent this from happening again (1) Look into the diet, there may be things in her diet that aren't balanced that she isn't aware of. (2) Leave the male glider with the mama (I cannot stress how important this is), and (3) accept the fact that if the glider continues to canabilize her joeys that she should no longer be bred.
I'm sorry you are going thru this, i can't imagine how awful it must be, but know that there are some very experienced people on this board and they want to help you so try to take their advice.. good Luck!

Ok, I'm not going to start a diet war here, but pellets are not the best choice - no matter what kind they are.

The proven diets are proven for a reason - years and years and years & generation after generation of glider joeys born & healthy eating these diets - there is only one PROVEN diet that involves a pellet & it is called Suncoast; however, the Suncoast diet also has several other elements that complete the diet. I would still bet that the problem is diet related even though she has other gliders that have not yet exhibited symptoms.

i just got off the phone with her and she gets her pellets from Brisky's she orders them from them over the internet. She has had many other Gliders not do this. This is the only one. I am new at this and am learning a lot from you all. I told her to put the MALE back with the mother and she is doing so right now! Why arn't pellet ok for the Gliders if it is just something for them to smack on? I am going to mix up some of the leadbeaters right now. I am going to take some over for her. Thanks for all the advice and anymore is greatly needed. thankssssssss

<- ducking and covering .,…**Monster** started it…. “diet Wars XXXX……….”

Just a joke above…

I have to admit I am not familiar with all of the diet plans… But reading your post that is the one thing that seems like might be the issue…. That is why so many of us are focusing on that… You may have a proven diet and not even know it… but please check into that…

Let me also add Welcome to GC, I should have done that sooner, we are here to help in any way ….. if you can think of anything else that might help us …please ask….

OK another question. How can a daddy help her when the baby is still in the pouch? I know they help when the babies are out but what can a daddy do with them still in pouch?

Stepping out of the diet war and moving this to Breeding and babies>>>>>> My suggestion though would be just to neuter the male and avoid all this heartbreak. Some Gliders just do not make good parents no matter what you feed them.

You know I think you are right. I went to the page they sent me too and she does everything on that page she is suppose too. she feeds rep cal, the vionate, calcium. I am doing the same. my sporky is healthy, and she raised him up before his eyes was ever open. It was a mirale that he made it. She kept him on her neck and fed him glider milk ever 2 hours, even at night. She was afraid he would get ate too. but now i am thinking maybe not. I think maybe the mother doesn't want another female in the cage, because she has only let the male's live. never has a female lived. I never thought of that untill some of you mentioned it. I am still going to feed the leadbeaters, my friend already knew about it. but it sure is good to learn some good things from you all here.

I am glad this has helped out…. Please let us know if there is anything else we can do,,, as I mentioned some gliders just are not meant to be parents…. If you friend was able to keep sporky alive from that age … she obviously knows something about gliders and can probably teach some of us…. You both sound like you are doing great and that maybe mom was the one with issues ****** fighting the urge to mention sybil here****

I am so sorry I just could not help the old movie reference ….. Please stick around, and let us know if we can help,,,, and you might be surprised and find that you can help others too…..

I just wanted to say Welcome to GC!

Without getting too much into the diet wars here (we keep referring to that because in the past, diet discussions have sometimes gotten a *little* out of hand here on GC , so we try to keep it lighthearted) Brisky's is one of the pelleted diets that I think gets a big thumbs DOWN from the majority of those who've carefully looked into it. Pellets in general are frowned upon because hard foods are known to cause mouth sores in gliders since they were designed to eat soft foods. Suncoast's "pellets" are soft, which is why it's on the diet list. You can soften up hard pellets by soaking them in apple juice, but I don't think that's the only issue with Brisky's.

I hope you get the issue resolved with your friend's glider. I think Monster's on the right track with the diet and daddy's help and maybe not enough milk for two joeys thought process.

sorry to hear about your troubles. You are definately in the right place for help. The people here are wonderful. To try and address the daddy issue. We just had twins born OOP about 8 days ago. Daddy even when the babies were in pouch actually brought momma food and he was always "singing" to the babies. He was very protective over her and maybe thats just enough comfort for momma not to be so stressed. I hope some of this helps. Hang in there.

Gosh. Does it ever help. This friend of mine thinks she knows it all and I am finding out on here that she does not. I am so glad to find this out and I am getting rid of the pellets from brisky's. I am ordering the suncoast pellets today. I love my sporky so much and would never want anything to happen to him because of my stupidity. I didn't know that the father played such a roll in the birth and the joey's. that is so sweet. I will tell her about what I am finding out, if she listens that is good, but you can bet she won't. I won't stop with her I will keep on her till she does. I won't stop trying. I do think she is very smart but sometimes it is hard to teach a old dog new tricks. thanks for all the help and I will do everything for my suggie I can. Thanks for all the wonderful advice! this is a great place!

Well Bad news The mother suggie ate the other baby today. I can't understand why, but my friend is after I begged and begged her. she is changing the diets. I wouldn't breed them again. I am not sure what she is going to do. All I know is that she is listening to me and going to put them on a proven diet. This is so sad to me. Some things just don't make sense. my heart is broke.
