I know you can freeze crickets, just not sure about the mealies.
However, the mealies will last a few months in the fridge so long as you take them out every few days and let them warm up and eat. So in all you really may not waste very many...
Hopefully someone else who freezes mealies can help you

I do it! Works woderfully. The mealies stay fresh and the gliders gobble them up. I order 11,000 mealies and I freeze them. I would have to freeze them anyways since when I put them on the gliders' plates they would crawl off. So I just freeze them all. No problems yet and my gliders eat them very well.

Gosh, I'm really confused as to HOW you freeze them. Mine never last that long, so it's really a non-issue with me, except for the fact that when I placed my order at the pet store SOMEONE placed my box of 500 in the freezer.
To make a long story short, we opened the box and the mealies all looked fine, but when I got them home, they had thawed out and had turned black and were "jelly-like" and, therefore, useless to my gliders who love the SQUIRMERS... so, that's why I'd say no to freezing them.
Agilitygliders, do you have a special process which keeps yours alive? Really curious here.

Glad to hear freezing mealie worms works. One more question - do you just stick them in the freezer the way they are shipped to you or do you package them in something special? Did that make any sense? I seem to remember reading somewhere that you needed to put them in oatmeal or wheat germ to keep them in the frig.

Mealies are easy to keep live. I bought a large but shallow Tupperware dish and had my husband poke/drill some holes into the top to allow air in. I keep the mealies in a mixture of oatmeal and the wood shavings stuff they come packaged in. Every few days, I throw in a slice of apple for moisture. If kept in the refrigerator, they'll go into a dormant state and won't develop into beetles quite so quickly.
Normally, I prefer to keep the mealies live, however when my husband and I went on our honeymoon and my in-laws were caring for our glider babies, freezing the "bugs" was a necessity; my mom-in-law is far too squeamish to even think of LIVE "bugs" in her refrigerator! I put the mealies into small Tupperware containers (without their oatmeal/shavings) and popped them in the freezer. They'll die quickly because of the cold, and they'll keep quite well in the freezer. (I will point out that my mom-in-law was sweet enough to pull the mealies out of the freezer about an hour before she fed the gliders so "the poor little babies didn't freeze their tongues!" She's a trip! I didn't have the heart to tell her that our boys actually like their "bug-cicles"!)

Sharon, thanks for the reply. I really got a chuckle out of your mom-in-law not wanting the live BUGS in her frig and her thoughtfulness in thawing the mealies. To be honest I'm not overly fond of keeping them in my frig or picking them up, but I have done it. I do know that they will keep a long time in the frig if taken out once in a while to warm up and eat, BUT with just one little glider it would take a long time for him to eat 500 worms. For me it just seems simpler to keep some of them out in the frig and freeze the rest for later. It also frees up some of the space in my frig - a lot of my space is already taken up with things for Stryder.

Ahhh, ok, so they are dead. I was going to say, the ones that my store accidentally frozen were definitely not going to "come back."
My gliders only eat the live ones, and they won't eat the freeze dried ones either.

Cyndi, I think the freeze dried would be completely different from freezing fresh worms. When they freeze dry them I believe all the moisture is taken out of them. I tried some freeze dried crickets one time and they are HARD. Don't even try to give Stryder those anymore.

Haha, well, if they don't wiggle, my gliders won't touch them, so I only feed live ones. I guess my fascination with this post was that I thought the mealies could be frozen and then thaw out... and live, lol. DOH! Silly me!

Well, I had read this topic before, so I thought I could put mealies infridge. Well, I did and 2 days later they're dead, not dormant, cause I had them out 4 hrs. What's up with that? I just gave them to them and they were eaten, but I'd rather just feed live. How long will they keep on the counter??

Tiger where did you get the live worms from? Did you put anything in the container with them? I put mine in wheat germ and oatmeal (dry), and they are fine for weeks....you shouldn't give up, meal worms are a gliders best friend (until eaten anyways)! I don't leave mine out very long, about 5 to 10 minutes and their all wiggly. I have left them out a lot longer, not 4 hours, but maybe 30 mins or an hour..

I got them at the pet store where I always do. I just got a lot this time so I don't have to keep going back. Yes they had oatmeal in them. Does it hurt to feed them dead? I really like to see them alive better. They have more fun with them.

You might get fresher ones by ordering on line, I haven't seen any lower prices than the Worm Man. He charges 11.75 per 1000 and shipping is included with that price. Worm man He has different size worms too, just a thought for you. I'm not really sure why yours would die, I discard the dead ones. I don't feed my suggies dead ones unless I am in between live ones and the only ones I offer to them are the Zoo Med brand in the can.

I just went on there and can't seem to find any of the sizes that are $10. Can't find it. Well, at least I gound out why my worms died. They were superworms and Grubco says not to put those in fridge. I just thought thet were reg. mealworms. That's what the pet store told me.

I also bought my from wormman.com. They come in a box with screeded sides. They ship on Mon. and Tues. Once I got them I put them in a plastic bowl with oatmeal and then put them in the frig. I have had them for around 2 weeks and they are still alive but dorment. When I feed my babies it only takes the worms about 5 min. before they are all wiggley.

Tiger, I should have worded my post differently about the cost at Grubco. The medium mealworms were $5.00 per 1,000 then there was a $5.00 charge for shipping and handling. So the cost was $10.00 per 1,000 when the shipping is added in.
