Hi everybody,
My Male glider is still young, only 4 1/2 years old but I was wondering if those with senior gliders can list their age(s)!
Also, tell a little about your senior glider...Do they show their age with more grey fur? Does arthritis effet their glider? Do they really slow down in activity level?
Love to hear from all of you with senior gliders!!

Christine

I know a few people have had gliders to live over thirteen, but I'm not sure about the other questions. My gliders are only two, so obviously I have no experience with the little seniors.

Hi Christine,
My gliders are Boo-Boo (8 years old) and BJ (7years old).
They defiantly don't have the spunk they used to but all in all they are pretty agile. Their coats are a little different than their younger days. I have lots of picture and video's posted of them here under Glider Talk. I can send you links if you can't find them if you want to see them.

this is a great post....I know mine aren't the oldest, they are all 1 1/2yrs. old. but I did have a 4yr. old girl who went to a new home to be with my boys' mother, her mate (their father) passed away, and the lady wanted an older female, so we "traded", I got the boys and she got my older female. smile she's happy as can be, I think when I had her with Trinity, she wasn't that happy, Trinity was just too hyper and playful for her, and the mommy of my boys is perfect for her.

My oldest is almost 9. As far as signs of his age, his fur is not as smooth as it used to be and, yes, if you look into his black areas you can see grey hairs growing. Also, his black markings are fading to brown. He had slowed down a bit and gotten "fluffy" until he got a young, new roomate. Since then he has gotten a lot more active and lost the extra weight, back to the weight he was at most his life.

Not sure about things like athritis but he is not nearly as agile as he used to be... or thinks he still is! He tries to pull off acrobatics that were no problem for him in his younger days and these days often ends up slipping or scrambling to keep himself from falling. Maybe one of these days he will realize he is no spring chicken and start acting his age... then I will be able to worry less about him!

Aspen (one of AmyMichelle's babies that I'm caring for right now) turns 12 next month.....Versai (her cagemate) turns 11. (I'm pretty sure that's what Amy told me.) Yes, they are BOTH showing signs of graying....I look at Aspen and remember a sweet loving lady who crossed over the Rainbow Bridge last year (Baybe--none of us who knew her will EVER forget her)...her personality hasn't changed ONE IOTA in the past 15 months, and they're both pretty agile. Versai runs a LOT in the wheel, Aspen not so much. But they are doing VERY WELL. heart

What an interesting thread/post. Thanks to everyone who responded. I have three young gliders myself but glad to hear they can live so long with proper care.

Although I don't have a concrete age for them, my Pika and my Cricky were about 13 years old when they passed heart They both showed a LOT of signs of aging - greying stripes, pinker ears, thinner fur, cataracts (Pika), etc. Pika had a bout with HLP a couple years before she passed, so her stiff joints were attributed to that. Here's a picture of the pair of them in their later years heart You can really see how much they had faded...

And here's one of Pika on her last day with her WF companion, Nara - the difference in coloration is really noticeable here:

oh suz, i really feel so much for you. the pain you so obviuosly felt for her, shows thru this last pic of her.
it must have been so hard for you, to 'carry on', once she was gone. it is so evident that you love them so much, because you care so deeply for everyone's gliders in this forum. i do hope that all my babies will live as long, & hopefully longer. they do become so much a part of us, they envelope our whole life, just as much as our little human babies do. you are a wonderful person, & i thank you for that.
i thank you for coming to everyones aid as you always do, to help us all see thru our bad crisis', to have a hope for the next day.

Now we all know that they never act their age. I have a 32+ year old horse that still tries to play with the young horses. I came home from work last summer and he was rearing up on his hind legs boxing with a two year old. Senile old buggar.

By the way he is about the equivilant of a 90+ year old man.

I wonder what the age ratio be for sugar gliders/human years.

Kimberley,
It seems like it should be about 6 years or so... Since humans can live 75-90 years and gliders can live 12-15 dunno But that's just MY calculations - nothing "scientific" here at all shakehead

My old man is Nicky. He is going to turn 11 this December. I can see that he is slowing down a bit, but Nicky is still one of my most active gliders. He still enjoys running on his wheel and gliding about my bedroom. Colorwise, he is still very dark and his fur is still nice and thick. He actually LOOKS younger now as opposed to several years ago (before he had his front incisors removed due to peridontal issues.)

I dont know exactly how old my George is, but I'm thinking that he is around 9. His previous owner had him for 3 years and I think he was about 3 when she got him, and I've had him for 3. This is his final home and will live out the rest of his days here. George actually looks alot better now that he has finally been on a good diet. And he hasnt slowed down one bit. But then again he has a few younger friends that keeps him on his toes. LOL

Oh, wow! That if funny! At my barn there was a 40 yr old stallion, georgous leopard appy who was just put down last week. Crippled with age, he could hardly walk yet he STILL took every oppertunity to holler at the ladies!

Cessna had lots of gray hairs and cataracts when she passed, though she didn't start to get those until after she started having spinal issues. We're still not sure what caused that, though the regular and emergency vets agreed it was probably age-related. She lived to be around 12-1/2 years and passed away earlier this month.

My oldest two gliders are sisters, Littlespot and Lightfoot, who are 9 1/2. Being "fluffy" has affected their activity some, but color has not yet changed.

I lost my first two, Grumpy, who I believe was 13 when he died, and his mate, Bashful, who I believe was 13 when she died, also. Grumpy's color was faded, he was thinner, and he acted old (stiff) for a couple of years before he passed. Bashful was also color faded, and over 1-2 years lost weight, but remained active until the last few days before she passed. It brings tears to my eyes to think about it, but both of them "told" me the night before they died, by wanting to cuddle for hours, instead of the minutes I usually got. I put them with their families knowing it would be the last time, and sure enough, it was. I had Grumpy 8 years, and Bashful 10.

None of my babies are babies, the youngest are 5 1/4 years old.

My two gliders (brothers) will turn 9 in about a month. Their hair is not quite as nice and full as it used to be, but other than that they are both happy and active. They have their own room to run around in so they get plenty of exercise climbing all over the place.
