Not sure about their toxicity, but ladybugs are good luck. You don't want to kill them.... lol

I have read once before (sorry been a long time ago and dont remember where) that ladybugs are toxic to feed sugar gliders, along with lightning bugs.

Rule of thumb that I was always taught is If in doubt, Stay away from it!!

I'll echo what Srlb said. Also, not all ladybugs are ladybugs, the orange ones actually bite, which causes an itchy rash! Those, I kill without remorse.

Also, any bug that is outside I wouldn't feed. The could pick up pesticides, that your glider will ingest when eating them!

As soon as I read this topic I nearly jumped out of my seat!

For the record Lady bugs are toxic not only to gliders but to many animals! They secrete a toxin and I forget if it's glandular or if it's incorporated into their haemolymph, but I do know that they are indeed toxic. Do not feed them to your gliders! Their aposematic colouration should give that away!

I think it's just so crazy how these little creatures can cause so much harm! I just saw something on animal planet last night on black widow spiders and what it did to a boy after biting him. It's crazy....

I was not planning on feeding it to them on purpose, but they could get one on accident because they are all over the place right not. It is completely disgusting. Thanks for the replys. I will continue to vacume them up. Really gross, but works.

Yeah, well, fortunately chances are, if your gliders do attempt to eat a ladybug they'll either end up spitting them out immediately (their toxin is also associated with a bad taste) or simply puke it out! Comparatively they aren't toxic to the point where a single beetle would cause death.

There are much more poisonous things like black widow spiders for instance where a single alteraction with the species could spell death, but for the most part, your gliders will be able to rid themselves of bad or toxic insect/arthropod food should they ingest it.

Fireflies and monarchs also fall under such a category of toxicity. I'm sure you've seen at least one photo of a bird vomitting a monarch butterfly somewhere. They cause bad tummy aches and taste bad all-around, but rarely lead to the death of the animal (i.e. the predator).

Many outdoor orthopterans (outdoor crickets, grasshoppers, locusts) also produce a toxin from glands in their mouths. Ever hold one between two fingers and see a thick reddish-brown secretion streaming from their mouthparts? That's a toxin! Keep them away from your gliders.

Several arthropods also produce various acids from their abdomens. Many ants and even earwigs produce such protective/defensive acids, so you may wanna stay away from these, too!

I'm sure I don't have to say that bees, wasps, and hornets pose dangers to your gliders and should not be fed.

Wild hornworms and the adult hawk moths are also items of caution as several species, particularly in the warmer climates, feed on tabacco plants and other such potent botanicals, which spells toxicity for animals that feed on them!

Red wiggler worms...? toxic! toxic! toxic!!!

Toads...? Nope! toxic, indeed! Those bulbous organs behind the eyes are known as parotid glands. They produce a toxin that irritates all mucous membranes (e.g. eyes, nose, mouth, etc). Any amphibian, though miniature and bite-sized, should not be fed to gliders as many of them are toxic.

Outdoor insects and creatures should be on the NO-NO list, anyway! I suppose it's good to know these things just incase, though.

WOW!
Great synopsis.
Thanks Mikey.

All those seemingly harmless (not) little guys could cause great heartache!

LOL.

They're likely hoping to take up residence in your house for the winter. They should be on their migratory way southbound, but sometimes, a few of them cheat their scheduled biological exodus by setting up shop in the warmth of people's houses until spring. The beetles are starting a commensalist relationship with us, and it's neat to see how the beetles are defying their very hardwiring to take the "easier (and safer) route" through the winter months.

Nevertheless, I swat the living [censored] outta the little pests. I hate it when they get on my brass pole lamp to hide out - and get burnt to a crisp - which REEKS. I have to open all my windows and doors, because they smell like burning electrical wires... the first time this happened, I had no idea what was going on, and Andrea and I thought our house was burning! Ever the little detective, Andrea tracked down the source of "the stink" and said, "Mommy, it's your light!" So, I was sure there was some issue with it, and I unplugged it - just to be safe. Took a look at the halogen bulb and found like a million dead "orange NOT ladybugs" - EWWWWWW.

Gross to the extreme! I cleaned the light out, but the smell was beyond disgusting... Now, I wish there were some kinda screen covering that wouldn't "catch fire" because I can't use that light at all during "orange NOT ladybug" season.

Mikey, you are a god. I love you. Marry me! XD That helped sooooo much because I usually leave dead moths where they are after I squish them because I dont like picking them up so I wait for them to dry up so I can blow them out the door :x so, now I wont be lazy!
