I need badly the normal findings for the gliders' blood analysis. It is a real problem here, because we have good vets, but no information concerning gliders. I have to remind anyone who is able to help that I live in Russia, an i'm not a vet myself, so it is next to impossible for me to phone one of your vets; yet, if it is possible to get one on e-mail, I'd be quite happy. In February we started a non-commercial glider project here; I am immensely grateful to Suz (Suz' Sugar Gliders) and many other people from GliderCentral who were willing to help us. We really need your help here. Anyone who whishes to assure oneself that this project really exists and is non-commercial can visit our site: http://possumov.net/ And here are our gliders (I'm "Elhe" there): http://possumov.net/gallery/main.php/v/possums/ We're not so many as yet, but, for all I see, the gliders are becoming quite popular in Russia, so the more information we have, the better for the gliders. Hello. Really cool that you visit GC here in the USA. I do not know the normal blood values for Sugar Gliders but hopefully someone will come along and help you. I will try searching online for it. Good luck to you on your project.

Nataly, when my vet did bloodwork on Pika on 1/25/2006, these are the "norms" that she notated on the lab report. I don't know what most of them are, but I'm sure a vet can determine that because there must be standard blood chemistry test abbreviations...
Comp. Mammalian Chemistries: SGOT (AST) 46 - 179 IU/L SGPT (ALT) 50-106 IU/L Total Bilirubin 0.4 - 0.8 mg/dL Total Protein 5.1 - 6.1 g/dL Albumin 3.5 - 4.3 g/dL BUN 18 -24 mg/dL Creatinine 0.3 - 0.5 mg/dL Phosphorus 3.8 - 4.4 mg/dL Calcium 6.9 - 8.4 mg/dL Glucose 130 - 185 mg/dL (can be normally around 50 mg/dL for marsupials) Sodium 135 - 145 mEq/L Potassium 3.3 - 5.9 mEq/L CPK 210 - 589 IU/L
That is not everything that is tested when they do a complete blood panel but it is all that I have norms for. Hope this helps.

Nataly, Thank you for taking the time and effort in putting together such a remarkable project. My suggestion would be to contact Peggy Brewer (srlb) is her screen name on here. She works closely with a wonderful vet who is more than willing to help provide information. His name is Dr. Tristan.

cbc - wbc, rbc, pcv, Standard stuff chemistry - albumin, globulin, TP, AST, ALT, BUN, Creat, Calcium, Phos, Na, K, Cl, GGT, CPK, LDH, glucose, amylase, Tbil.
Most of this is on a standard panel. the only two that they may need to request would be the LDH and GGT.
This is the list that he sent me over before when I asked him for his blood work up before.
I will contact him and ask him for his numbers on this as well.

Keep in mind that "normal" results are determined in each lab. Each lab looks at it's own resulted values, calculates the mean and standard deviations, and determines the normal values from its own database. Hospital to hospital variations occur. This isn't really something taken off a chart or from a book. Slight differences in procedures, different brand names of reagents used for the tests, and many other such things lead to variability. So, there are always small changes in each lab's "normal" numbers. Next to the results each lab usually lists it's own normal ranges. But book listed results should usually be close.
Often the expected results have age differences as well. For example, a young joey, (or kitten or puppy, or baby) will have a higher alkaline phosphatase values because of rapidly growing bone. Age matters, but one won't normally see that data posted by age.
Often there are not enough specimens taken form each species at one office to have calculated norms for them all. Often pooled data, other species results, and other substitutions are done.
I would also wonder if the reagents used to do testing are more similar here in the same country lab to lab compared to a foreign country. If the results are different than expected compared to USA posted "normals," be aware that this difference could be related to lab issues and not necessarily mean that that your pet has a problem.
Good luck.
