Ok I read all the time on here about how everyone's gliders love to play and love their toys, etc. Well mine don't come out of the pouch to play unless I get them out and it is beginning to bug me. They are not unhealthy, just lazy I guess. I have even started taking the pouch out of the cage for 30 minutes each day while I clean house, this is in addition to the play time we have each night interactively. They don't use the wheel, the ball pint, the forage toys, the hammocks, none of it. I have tried moving things around, replacing things in case they are bored, etc. Anyone have a clue what the deal is? They have a large cage full of great stuff.

Uh...are you trying to get them out during the day? That would be the issue...

Gliders are nocturnal, so they should *not* be active during the day...that is the time when they are sleepy and cuddly.

To get your glider to play actively, you need to get a tent or glider-proof a room and take them out at NIGHT. Then they will run around like little bats out of Hades, and believe me, you'll wish they were calmer when it's time for you to try to put them away.

Sorry if this is obvious and you've already tried this.

Mine typically don't REALLY wake up until about 10pm.

mine spend all day with me in a pouch, then play all night. so that may not be the issue.

I DONT know what it could be, just saying, that's not always true, mine spend THE WHOLE day with me, then play well at night.

don't feel like it is just you, dear.
i have spent alot of bucks on toys that were promised to give my suggies endless hrs of fun.
they don't go near 'em.
my husband found somewhere on the computer a pic of a whole bunch of toys in the background, & a glider holding a cap to a pen, & the caption to this was:
$60 worth of toys, & he wants to play w/the pen cap!!!!!!!!!
this also reminded us of our youngest, when he was just a lad, we got all sorts of stuff for him, & he'de rather play w/the box!!!!!!!!!!!
go figure.
i'm thinking about getting ahold of the companies that sold me these toys, & ask them just how are the critters supposed to play w/&/or on these.

We have a great tent with lots of tent toys that we get out at night, usually after hubby gets home after 11pm. I only started taking the pouch out for 30 mins recently because I am concerned they are not getting enough exercise. As soon as tent time is over, back in pouch they go and there they stay until we take them out again the next night. They play with nothing and it is frustrating.

do they just come out and eat? and that is it? do you have other pets in the house? maybe the other pets are bothering them, no matter where the other animals are at, they can smell them.

How old are they? Are they young? Mine took a while to figure out toys ... and if they are older, maybe they just aren't used to playing?

they are about a year old and they are in our bedroom. I am not sure if the guy we got them from gave them toys or not, we got them in July.

well, they should be used to playing with toys by now then....have they been to the vet for this? maybe just start making them get up for a while BEFORE you take them out to play and sit by their cage and talk to them and all that bonding stuff. lol. I don't really know what it could be...do you have a TV on in your room? it could be that you guys are bothering them and they don't feel like they are SUPPOSED to play, maybe move them to a different room?

my trio. has been A LOT more active than they were in my room. I think I BOTHERED THEM! I was cutting in on their play time. lol.

Good luck

All mine are downstairs in the thick of the activity in our house. They pick & choose what they want to play with in the cages. They all do like one wheel or the other( I have 3 types in each cage)
My guys spend the daytime bonding on mommy and they get out for playtime at night. They ALL play. I have one out of 9 that is lazy and doesn't play without me harrassing her with feathers.

What kind of wheel do you have? Do any of your toys have bells on them? Maybe you're just not noticing... Do you keep the light on alot in the bedroom? They definitely won't come out to play if the light is on. Also, maybe they're just scared of you still. dunno Gliders are VERY sensitive creatures. Rodan STILL crabs at me every time I go NEAR his cage and he's been with me for over a year! LOL They all go at a different pace. grin

Are you sure they don't come out and play around 3/4/5am when everybody is sleeping?
Mines come out and eat, between 9pm and midnight (never the same time) and sometimes play a little, but then go back to take "naps".

Between 3am and after that, they are "full switch" running on the wheel.

Now: if I turn All the lights OFF... they will bark mad and WON'T come out of their pouches. When I turn a "night lamps" on... back to play.

When I put too many toys in their cages, they don't like it.
When they have the same toys for more than few days... they get bored. Same as if I repeat too many times the same fruits or veggies.

If you want, you can try taking some of the toys out, and change them every once in a while.

Remember that as humans, suggies also have their own personalities.
Some are very outgoing and playful, some are more quiet and prefer to just be cuddled.
They are like our kids, and we love them whichever personalities they have. And sometimes it takes a big effort, to get to know them and know what they need to come out of their shells.
Maybe if you change something in their routine, it might help that they get more active.
Wish you the very best with them hug2

I see what you are saying. So this is what I did tonight, my husband and I moved the cage to the dining room, I switch out the cage set and toys, and move some things around. Maybe it will make them more curious to explore if things are not where they should be all the time lol.

Thanks for all of the replies, I will update in a day or two.

Glad to hear that the change worked. thumb
I imagine how sweet must have be for you to hear the sound of the bells, the balls and the wheel. (Sighs) clap cloud9

My older pair, got me for the past 2 or 3 nights on the edge of the chair. worried
She's pregnant (and past due her date of OOP).
They both stayed all night in their sleeping pouch these past nights. When I opened it, they hide her pouch with both of their bodies.
I heard one of the babies cry... So I thought: well... MAYBE the babies are OOP! shock (And they both are very overprotective of their babies), so they don't want me to see them...

This evening, when I was next to the cages of my other suggies, she came out and started "barking" at me. She decided to come out and play with me, jump like "nothing happened.
She looks bigger and bigger everyday, and today I saw her HUGE as ever!!! little tails & paws hanging out, and her... pushing them back in. confused crazy upset

And I'm about to have a heart attack!!! tant

off_topic Raquel, good luck trying to get a peek at the joeys... one of my momma's ALWAYS let's me see her joeys... she will come out of her cage pouch big belly and all, sit down in my hands belly up and ask for a massage! roflmao

But the other one! She is a sneaky little mom! No matter how many mealies and yogurt treats I bribe her with, there is NO WAY I am getting a peek at the joeys before they are ready! shakehead

SugarMomma81,

I have a glider who doesn't like to "play" with the toys I have in their cage... he uses the wheel, but that is about it. What I found that he LOVES is the feather cat toys (feathers attached to a plastic stick) he will chase them FOREVER when I have him out for playtime! Give that a try... you never know what your gliders will like smile

another thing to remember is, that when you buy these neat cat toys, that none of toys should have any catnip in them.
someone from this forum taught me that. i will never be able to remember who does the teaching, as i have a severe short memory problem (redefined as old age).
cat nip is supposed to be deadly for them, or @ least it can make them very sick.

Josefine,

You are 100% correct! I forgot to mention that catnip is a BIG no-no for suggies.
