Leaving a joey alone in the pouch at playtime? #67357

is this normal? she'll take one or the other if it's feeding at the time she decides to start moving, but I wonder if it's ok if she leaves the joey alone? I've been taking the lone joey out and sticking it in my bra to make sure it doesnt get chilly and i also keep little blankets in there for them to snuggle with....when Sukoshi goes back into the pouch after a while she lets the baby snuggle and feed, but I wonder if I should keep an eye out.

I keep reading all of this horribly sad stories about rejected joeys and it would break my heart if one of my little guys had a similar fate.

any advice?

is the dad not staying in either? Usually for the first week or 2 the dad will stay in while mom goes out and plays. How old are the also? It isn't bad that you are hold the lone joey though.. Is she feeding both? Is the one that is alone cold when you pick him up?

No...No one is staying in the pouch. My gliders have their own room and I usually go in, grab the pouch gently and hold it for a little while and talk to it, usually then the dad comes out, and mama stays with the babies for a few minutes ( the joeys are not even a week oop, btw). She eventually peeks her head out and comes out with whoever is attached to her and they just leave the babies with me. They never leave the babies COMPLETELY alone....they are always with ME when it happens and I hold the joey and it's not cold at all. They will come to check on the joey every few minutes if it cries or if they dont hear it for a while, but I am just concerned that leaving the joey alone at ALL is a bad sign. I don't know if they leave just because they trust me babysitting or what. I am still green when it comes to gliders so I dont want to foul up and cause one of the little ones to get sick and possibly die if I can avoid it.

we have one pair where the mother will come out with the baby--proceed to crawl into our shirts and come out leaving the baby behind--

if they are still coming back to check on the baby, when it cries and such, then their should be no problem, especially when she goes back with the joeys and feeds both of them--

i wouldnt be too concerned, but if you have a feeling in your stomach--then you should watch--

I would consider it an honor that they trust you with their babies! Of course watch to make sure she doesn't leave it completely alone, but as long as it's only when you're there, it sounds okay.

Mine trust me with their babies, but I had one smaller than the other and worried she wasn't getting fed enough so I supplemented both, as a precaution. If they are allowing you to watch the babies while playing and eating, maybe you should consider supplement feeding the little one being left alone while mom and dad eat and play. Wouldn't hurt.

[:"green"]It sounds like she is trusting you to act as her joeys' nanny - this is a huge sign of trust on her part. Is it always the same joey that gets left behind or does it vary? If it's always the same one, then I would start supplement feeding just to be safe. If it varies, then I would just continue to keep a watchful eye on the situation. Truly, though, it sounds like they're just trusting you a lot...

I agree that she trusts you with her babies. That is a definite honor. Gidget did the same thing with Tom and Jerry. Sometimes she would even crawl into my hands and pull the babies oop then go run in the wheel. She always looked so releived when she would run off to the wheel. It was so funny. Kind of like going to the gym and dropping your kids off at the daycare!

The same one gets left, but he is much bigger than the other one. He is always warm and full, so I'm not worried about him not being fed. I'm not so concerned now. Thanks, guys!
