Hi everyone
I don't know if this is has happen to anyone else or not but I thought that I would post this. Last night I in bed when I heard a lot of crabbing and fighting in the cage from my gliders. So I got up and went to see what was going on only to see one of the female glider stick in the wheel. she had gotten her tail wrapped around the bar inside the wheel. After a bit of crabbing at me and after getting bit I finaly got her tail undune from the bar.
I don't know how it happened yet but I do know that if I had not gotten up she might have lost her tail. So I thought that I would post this warning and also see if anyone else has had this happen to them.

Thanks for the warning. What kind of wodent wheel do you have? I have a couple different ones.

This has been reported before as being a problem with Wodent wheels. Not a common occurence....but it has happened. I've given this a lot of thought; but, for the life of me, I can't figure how it is happening??? Anybody have a clue???

Am I just dense or what. Anybody ever pick up on the name of this wheel?? It just clicked!! WODENT..... RODENT..... WHEEL..... Elmer Fudd..... Wabbit..... gee..... i'm slow.....!!!!

Wow, I've never heard of that happening before... I'm glad your baby is safe. I have never used a Wodent Wheel but I have a Rowdy wheel... Erwin loves to use it when I'm not looking (or he thinks i'm not)

You'd have to ask Judie if this was a Wodent Wheel specifically; she never refers to it by brand name, but it's a wheel with a center spindle and cover.

Glider Greetings:

From the description that Judie gave of the method used by the firemen to disassemble the wheel, i'm fairly confident that it was not a Wodent Wheel. I have a pretty good idea of what wheel it was from her description; but, will not mention a name since I don't know for sure.

Ok
It was not a wodent wheel that Judie's glider got hurt in. I have had one glider with a very long - well extra long tail get it caught. He was in the wheel with his baby daughter and it happened. They were both stressed and he was in pain. I will say it happened on the small wheel not the large one.

The wheel that I have is a woodent wheel. I ti sthe med. size one that they sell. after taking it out last night and looking it over really close and all, I still do not see how it happened. The only thing I can think of is that she and anouther glider where in the wheel. You know how gliders hold there tail up when running I think the other glider jumped over the bar, or she did and her tail got into it and she got looped again around the bar.
I see gliders use there tail for almost everything so it was a suppires to me that she could not get it un done. I think she was cribbing at the other because the other glider was going to help her chew throw the tail to get her free.
very happy that I found her before she had a chance to.
Becare full what the gliders get, No matter what you think it might not be as safe as what we thought.
This is what I have learned this time.

JBMorris...A while back, I also read a couple of posts where very young gliders were hurt due to tails getting caught on the center rod...I can't figure it out either...However, during the months where I had little ones, plus little ones on the way, I took the wodent wheel out of their enclosure...I just put it in a few weeks, ago, and am now debating if I should remove it again ...I thought it was only "unfluffed" tails that were getting caught...My gliders have a variety of wheels: flex wheel, (We like it the best) a wodent, and three other different types of wheels...They use them all...So happy that your lil one was OK...

I can say with 100% certainty that it was not a Wodent Wheel, it was one of mine. It was not one of my newer versions, however. It was based on my older design, and was a special design. I had worked on the design for Judie for a while, and I was confident that the design was safe, and never tested it. that is where the problem was.

I have had a couple of gliders get their tail hung up in the 9 inch as well as the 11 inch wodent wheels. Tails though were not damaged as they were lucky not to have been caught for long.

Why does this happen? .....from the glider's tail being simi prehensil. When it touches something it sort of wraps or curls around the object. Then glider starts to run and then the tail gets wraped up over the spindel.

One thing I found is if the spindel is cleaned at least once a week with a wet cloth this removes any residue that the gliders get on it. If not cleaned properly it gets sort of tacky thus the hair from the tail catches more easily and then the tail itself gets wraped around it and will not slip off so easily as if would if the spindle were smooth.

So...might want to check out the spindle and be sure it is clean.

[:"blue"] Glider Greetings, Judie:

Have you by any chance contacted the manufacturer about this problem?

I wonder if slipping a metal or plastic tube over the center spindle would solve the problem? The tube would be just slightly larger in diameter than the center spindle so it would spin if a glider grabbed it with his tail??

Do you think something like that would work??

Rowdy was the manuafcturer of this wheel, but I also contacted Eric about the wodent wheels.
and he is going to try to see what he can come up with , but if he uses the sleeve that would cause a small space near the front and/or back panel.. but he will read this thread and see what can be done..

That is one of my biggest concerns when building each wheel. I try my best to ensure that there is no gap between the covers and the axle cover. I have been racking my brain trying to figure out a better way of making the axle covers, but there is no other way, than the way I am doing it. The axle, both covers, and the axle cover are all hand made by me, form differing materials. I had actually thought of making the axle cover bigger, so that it spins with the wheel. The only problem with that is that if the axle cover gets sticky with urine or food, the glider's tail would be even more prone to wrapping up on the axle cover.

I will try to see if I can come up with a solution to the space issue. The only problem I have with an idea I am toying with now is that it may make my wheels a bit louder. The problem with that is that I think the quietness of my wheels is one of its biggest selling points.

Eric said he was going to build a tips page on his site, here is what he is going to put on it regarding situations like this..

A couple times over the years we've heard of sugar gliders "getting their tails caught" by the axle of a wheel. At first thought this sounds fairly impossible - after all, the axle isn't spinning; it's stationary relative to the cage (and the glider), it's the wheel that's the only thing spinning. If the glider is running along in a "conventional" mode, this is true and all is well in the world. However, if the glider likes to stop short and do a loop-the-loop while the wheel spins on - while at the same time grabbing the axle with his tail, he could be setting himself up for a good tail-yank if the axle is allowed to get all sticky and gunky. This appears to be a pretty rare situation, but the best protection against it is simply keeping that axle clean. Having a thin sheen of baby oil on it is generally a good idea and also helps to lubricate things and prevent rusting. Another suggestion is covering the axle with a freely-rotating plastic tube, such as a short piece of a large soda straw, will also prevent this. (If your glider likes to jump up and perch on the axle, this could make that kinda tricky.) Again, letting everything get gunky will defeat the suggestions - always good to keep things clean.

The baby I had that got her hung up on a wheel had a sleeve cover over the axel. My guess is she was up on the spindel with mom running in the wheel and too close to the side panel. Just a bit of hair and then skin...actually got sucked up between the axel and sleeve and thus wrapped around the axel due to rotation of the sleeve over the axel. The skin was ripped about an inch or so from below the knee and up the leg.

Do not think the cover thing would work after seeing what it did to my little joey. She was stuck there for several hours till I found her ar 7:30 am and then I took her and the wheel to the fire dept to have it removed as well as to the vet afterwards to have the skin glued back into place and an antibiotic.
