I know I have to just take the bite but how long does it usually take until they decide to stop tasting you as though you might be food?
I adopted my first 2 sugar gliders Monday evening. I've gone through the waiting period, and have been talking to them and giving them treats through the cage sides.
Tonight was our first tent time. The female (now named Bonnie) climbed all over me then decided I was okay, let me give her yogurt bits, and even let me pet her with one finger. She's really adorable.
The male (Clyde) is a little monster! He keeps taste testing me as though maybe he can bite off a bit and decide if I'm edible. So far I'm doing my best to just take the bites...and he hasn't broken skin, yet. He'll also take treats from me but that's as close as he'll let me get.
All of which is fine. As far as I'm concerned it's all progress. My only question is does anyone have any info on how long he'll go on taste testing me? Some of those bites really hurt!
TIA Pam

I've had my male since May, he still bites. I got him as an adult though. I just got a new pair of leu hets & they still bite. Offer them your knuckles, I've heard it doesn't hurt as much. I have also wrapped my male in a piece of fleece, it helps but he tries to escape, he usually wins. He's a tough lil booger. HTH

Clyde is about 13 mths old so he's an adult too. Apparently he had bonded with his previous owner but she took a job in Texas and had to leave him here with her husband and daughter for the past month or so, so he hasn't had attention for a while. I'm going to just be patient...and keep working at it. But OUCH!!! :-)

Are you sure it's full on bites or just nibbles? Because, young gliders go through a "tasting" stage where they nibble but that's all I know about that. My female is around 3yrs old and she still tastes (nibbles then slowly increases herself to a bite) anything she sees. =/ So, I'm assuming some gliders may never grow out of that phase. Using unscented hand sanitizer may cut down the nibbling for you. Does for me. Have you tried distracting him or hissing twice if he goes to bite too?

My new male took skin today. I didn't think I'd ever stop bleeding. I was trying to put him & his mate in a pouch to take along w/ me to Raleigh, NC today & the lil booger tried to escape & he lit me up. It HURT! They will let me pet them inside the cage, their pouch but they won't let me hold them yet. I've had them a week today.

knuckles helps a lot for me-seems they aren't intereseted in anything hard if they are truly 'tasting' and also my knuckles aren't as sensitive as my fingertips so that makes it easier to not draw back when it happens. each glider bonds at their own pace and you have to do things his way to prevent going backward instead of forward. if he's not drawing blood then u are blessed and not realizing it-hang in there. he may be feeling abandoned and take longer than the norm to establish trust with you since his former owner disappeared on him. i have 12 rescues/rehomes here and it's always a different experience EVERY time.

Bourbon is an excellent person to talk to about biting gliders. I was at the Mason Gathering and she showed me how to curb my biting female. Try holding the glider in a pouch real tight against your body and humming Silent Night to the glider. Do this several times to try to curb their biting. It really helped me.

"Offer them your knuckles" It makes them sound vicious! But it is true, knuckles hurt WAYYYY less than sensitive fingertips.

Maybe you should back up on the bonding? He may not want to go as fast as the female. Give him a chance to get used to you and his surroundings. Carry them in a bonding pouch during the day will help them get used to you too. When I get a new glider, esp an older one, I use the bonding pouch for a long time, massaging them thru the pouch, then offering treats while they're in the pouch. I found the slower you go, the closer they will bond to you.

This is soo true... When I first got my boy (my first suggie). he was and still is a little very aggressive. He would bite the [censored] out of me everytime I tried to pet him... It has been almost two months since I got him and he still bites me every once in a while. It is very necessary to go at his pace, at first I was just so excited that I went too fast and he rebelled everytime. once I slowed down he became a little more gentle with me. He is still a brute though but the dr. said it will calm down more when he is neutered...
His biting could also be his way of grooming sometimes. I figured that out the hard way with my boy. Just last night I had my hand in the pouch while we were at my nana's and the entire time he would start to nibble but that did not last long until he bit me so hard I bled... When he did this I "psssst" at him and he would stop for a while and lick me....

I have had my little girl since last month and she still nips at me on ocassion but it is not as hard as she use to bite me. It is just a time thing and you have to let it run its course because that is part of the bonding process.

But earlier this evening every time I stopped by his cage to talk to them he was first to pop his head out of his pouch to visit. I hadn't tried hissing...didn't even think of that...thanks!

I'll find her and ask for more info. I'm not a fan of biting since my aunt bit me when I was 5. I was a vicious little biter and she was teaching me why I shouldn't do it. I haven't bitten anyone since AND I still remember her doing it and that was 44 yrs ago. :-)

I have really learned my lesson on this issue. Rushing the bonding process will usually make a biting problem worse. My newest suggie came to me very tame, but she was so well bonded with her previous owner that the move was quite traumatizing. She definitely had separation anxiety. So, I decided to heed the advice to take it slow, offer lots of treats, and let her go at her own pace. Just a few short weeks later, she will nibble occasionally but it tends to be more of the "tasting" variety...not the kind which draws blood (OUCH!! I'm shocked at some of the stories I've read on here!) She has warmed up very quickly, and actually seems eager to get out the cage to interact and play. I treated my very first suggie differently, and even after a couple of years she is tame but clearly not as friendly and outgoing as my newest fuzzy. With my first, I always thought my only choice was to stick my hand into the pouch, close my eyes, grit my teeth and take whatever was coming (thinking this would "teach" her that biting was ineffective). But, this is not the best way to build trust. I probably could have saved myself a LOT of sore fingertips if I had tried the slow approach from the beginning.
