It took me awhile for Junior to look up when I called his name but after awhile sitting by his cage and just talking to him he realized it was me and now when I walk into the room and talk to him - even if he's asleep he'll pick up his head to acknowledge me - keep on trying -

My boy responds to my husband saying his name. He will peek his head out of his pouch and check him out. He can say the girl's name and our boy doesn't come out, so I think he recognizes the tone in the voice or something? usually I make a clicky sound and he will occasionally come out to see me. I usually don't call his name until after I make the clicky sound. lol

Just about any animal can recognize a certain sound that you make (ie a name...click...whistle) and realize that it means THEM. Here is something to try...
1: DON'T use your gliders name too frequently 2: Only call your glider when you are ready to knowledge him/her with attention 3: For a while, always have a mealie or other favorite treat on you, when you call your gliders name, if they look up at you, immediately give the treat.
I train with my dog in obedience and the same thing goes there too, your glider can get "desensitized" to their name if you use it too much or not give them anything for responding to it.
I have tried to teach two of my gliders their names (Pepper and Basil) with quite some success. Now, if I call their name, they will always look at me and if I have a mealie on hand they will even come over to me to get the mealie!
So... do they ACTUALLY know what their names are? I think that it is more sound correlation. They connect their name with "mommy wants to give me a treat" and therefore they respond to their name by looking at you or coming to you.
GOOD LUCK!

Only one of mine responds to his name. I think it's because I do spend more time with him though. He's a lone male and needs it. It had a lot to do with mealie bribery. He almost always peeks out of the pouch when I call him.
