Ok I leave the fruit in my gliders cage all night and clean it out in the morning. My cage is now infested with fruit flies. I have done a complete strip down and clean but the flies persist. The cage is immovable (weighing in at over 500 lbs) and too complex to disassemble, so i use warm soap and water to clean it in place. I wanted to know if i could make a fruit fly trap and use it in the cage. The trap would be a salt shaker with a mixture of water and vinegar (to attract the flies). The shaker will be in a place in the cage that is not accessible. There will be no way for the gliders to get at the vinegar and no way for them to tip it over. It would be a very mild solution of vinegar diluted in the water in the shaker. the flies are attracted to the vinegar and fly in through the holes in the top of the shaker then drown in it when they tire. They will not fly back out the same way they came in.

is that the only way to get rid of fruit flies? I have the same problem with my cage... I hate that the flies are around his food. Right now I have only seen one fly but I dont want them to multiply.

There are "fly tapes" that you can get at some dollar stores....but I wouldn't recommend using them ANYWHERE that your glider could possibly get to them. I have this horrid vision of trying to get that sticky goo out of glider fur: it sends SHIVERS down my back. I'd be more willing to use a few thin wedges of apple in soap water stuffed into a pop bottle myself: the rotting fruit will attract the flies, and the soap water will hopefully drown them. Check every trash can in your house for fruit flies' "breeding grounds"....the little buggers are CREATIVE in finding places to lay their eggs.

Unfortunately my cage is a heptagonal glass sided cage with a central air (not air conditioning just a vent to circulate the air) It is very safe and no way a glider can get to the fan. It has three different covers with a 6in gap. It is not possible for a glider or joey to get at the fan either by reaching for it or getting their tail near it. Just wanted to make sure that was clearly explained. The nature of the cage makes fruit flies getting in and out of the cage impossible unless they come in as eggs on the food or through the door when it is opened. There is adequate ventilation i assure you. At any rate the cage is pretty well sealed so putting it outside the cage does nothing for inside the cage. Because the cage is glass sided there are areas where i can put it where it will be almost impossible for a glider to get to, even if it does get near it the salt shaker is a single piece of ceramic with the only entries small holes where the salt comes out. The difficulty is securing it to the cage, after all it is glass sided. I will try this once i can devise a safe way to secure it in the cage.

I had the same problem. Annoying they are. I did the vinegar & dish soap, it worked. It took a few days but the lil boogers are gone. I just left it by their cages out of their reach.

Fruit Fly Cure: Take a small glass and fill it with 1/2" with Apple cider vinegar and 2drops of dish washing liquid, mix well. You will find those flies drawn to the cup and gone forever.. Hope it works
