This situation just has me baffled . A few nights ago I ran out of Spring water for the glider's...first time in over 4yrs. I had no choice but to use tap water. All 3 cages the next morning had almost empty bowls. Now...it could be evaporation overnight...but then why wouldn't the Spring water evaporate just as quickly? Are they drinking more? It's so strange, because there is a major difference in the amount left over in the mornings. I was so curious, I tried this 3 nights in a row...and same result. What ya think?

Perhaps there's a bit more sodium in the tap water than there is in the spring water, and hence causes the gliders to be more thirsty than usual? That would be my guess if anything. Very interesting, though.

Some bottlled water just tastes nasty to me. I've always used tap water unless traveling or the time I spent in Arizona. Maybe they like tap water too

I know in holland it is save to drink out of the tap and I always give them tap water.
But if you live in a other country wher you cant trust the water or you are going to a strange country then use NO tape water, not onley gliders but humens too. and iff you don't drink out of a tap don't let your gliders do it.
It can couse diarea and other more horribel illnis.

some peopele give water out of a spring in the garden, if you ar used to it then it is not a problem but if you ar not DONT DO IT. (in holland ther is al lot of what we call souer rain, that means that it not save so we never drink out of a spring)
So it depents on your habbets and your lifing surcumstances.

Botteld water is absoluut save but ik can be expensive (depending on where you are staying).

So I'm not losing it after all? LOL I noticed the same thing...hmmm cept I put the water in the bottles..it couldn't have evaporated in there. I don't care for bottled water ..lots of it tastes gross. But I worry about the tap water cause once in awhile the water company will send a letter AFTER THE FACT that oops...water should have been boiled on such and such date..not often, but it's scary.

Do you have city water or a well?

At my moms- they have a well, which is the same as bottled water pretty much (I loved it!). But in my apartment I have city water and it's sick it tastes like a swimming pool! I got a water dispenser & buy those big 5 gallon jugs and refill them. When I run out & have to use the tap water, I haven't ever noticed a difference in the amount they drink.

Maybe you just have tasty water!

We have Lake Michigan water, and to me...it tastes and smells GROSS! I just fear the "possibility" of giardia, so I have always used Spring water...but this is just bizarre. Going to go back to Spring water tonight...and see what happens. Maybe I should put the same amount of both in there and see what happens?

You know what's funny.. the only time that I use bottled water for them is when I'm traveling, and they never drink it!

I don't really like the taste of city water.I dunno if my gliders would drink it either since it has all the extra chemicals.
I know sometimes my babies drink more than others but i havenot tried diffrent types.

And another fact is that at least 75% or more bottled water is TAP WATER!! Glad I don't drink the stuff at all. I do have to admit that up north water is much better and colder.

I use filtered water. We have a canister filter under the kitchen sink and when you get it out of a smaller tap off to the side, it is filtered. They are fairly inexpensive I believe.

Karen,
Did you do just Spring Water or did you do Spring and tap water to see which they drank? Whichever you did what were the results?

I think bottled water sometimes tastes hideous, and I HATE well water, but Gizzy gets Brita water lol and he loves it, you can buy the refill canisters at the store pretty cheap

I have a weird idea....you mentioned that you have the water in bowls? Maybe the gliders could smell and taste that the water was different, and did something to it. They could have splashed it out, or maybe tried to "scent" the strange water, and it could have splashed out of the bowl that way. Just a strange thought, but I bet the gliders did something to the water because they could tell it was different.

Honest to goodness...it was just so bizarre to see the tap water almost gone, and the bottled Spring water (which I have used from day one)...hardly touched. The theory they tossed it out...I don't buy only because 3 cages had the same results. Since this post...I have alternated between regular tap water, and the bottled Spring water, and same thing...tap is drank far more than the Spring. I certainly cannot figure it out, but it's true! (one night, one cage drank alot of the Spring water, but the other 2 did not.)

Do you know anyone who could test both the Spring and tap water to see what the difference is? Got to be something in one of them to make that much difference. It would be interesting to find out.

I use tap water, but then again my whole family drinks tap. We have birds and a dog as well--so...
anyhow, all my friends who have gliders use tap water, too. However, I was told you can mix gatorade or juice half & half w/water?? anyhow, no vet has told me not use tap.
ttfn.

Karin, this is just the most interesting post! I'd be very curious to see what the testing might show in terms of differences between the spring and tap waters. You know, to kinda support your idea, when I got my first glider, I immediately began serving the bottled water, and it was like they NEVER drank anything. I read post after post, and just wondered how this little guys stayed hydrated. Then, at some point, I thought, why buy this stuff if they aren't going to drink it anyway, and I started slowly changing the water to tap. Guess who drinks their water now? Yep. All of them. Before, with the spring water, my bottles were nearly always full, now that they are on tap, they are always half empty!

Strange little furry people, indeed!

Incidently, our little Oliver has settled in quite nicely, and he is just the most adorable little water lovin' baby! He's nearly emptied his bottle, and it's time for a refill.

Here is a site with some interesting information about water sources:

http://www.nrdc.org/water/drinking/nbw.asp

GC had a thread on the best type of water some time back. I think the majority decided the best option was to purchase and use a good quality filter and regular tap water. This is one of those topics that will have many different opinions.
