Well, my little Sky isn't little any more. He's been gaining and gaining. Finally, at 222 grams, something had to be done. The challenge is how to manage his weight in a colony of 4. So, here's what I am doing & it seems to be working...

1. Carefully measuring. I found that when I used a 1/4 cup that was narrow and deep, I put in less food.

2. No more mealies until he is skinny. That is easy. I carry him with me in the morning when everyone else gets their superworms.

3. Sky misses the first fruit and veggie feeding. First thing at night, I put in HWP for everyone. Then a couple hours later, I take Sky out and keep him with me while everyone else gets fruits and veggies. Then he goes in. Lots of the fruit and veggies are gone, so he doesn't get to gorge on them.

So far Sky's lost 7 grams and is now at 216. His target weight is going to be between 160 and 175. His dad is 160 and seems about the right weight.

I'll keep you posted. Any suggestions would be helpful!!!

It sounds like you have a good diet plan worked out! Also, try and get him out for extra exercise..running, gliding, stretching also helps. I bet you will have him down in no time! Good Luck.
MERRY CHRISTMAS

Your plan sounds devoted and caring!

Good luck with him! He's an adorably chubster!

Yes, fluffy is cute! When we went to a glider gathering and for the first time saw fatties, I never thought I'd have one! And, hopefully after this diet, I won't have one. LOL!

Thanks for sharing this Crescent!! I have a HUGE glider at 236 grams, I'm going to try what you are doing! I cut out treats months ago..to no avail. Olivia runs in the wheel and plays. I cut back on diet. Still..nothing frown I hope this works with her too!

Ok... it has been slow, but we have progress. Sky is down 10 grams! From 222 to 212! Not where he should be, but better than he was! At the top of the post, he appeared to drop a lot of weight quickly. I think it was a boo boo on the scale! Losing the weight is hard to do.

Hello, It has been awhile since I have been online. I also have a hefty glider in a cage where everyone else is normal weight. I was concerned about her health, heart, Bp, blood sugar..... I took her to my vet with my concerns. She is now on thyroid medication. It took about a month before she began dropping weight, but then she did a drop nice amount. I was also putting her in a seperate cage for an hour to two hours with a diet proportion of the main dish. And then putting her back in with the group where she could still munch on the side dishes. I was also doing this because her group has the members that have auto-immune hemolytic anemia. Doing this gives the ill ones a chance to eat more leisurely without her porking out on everything. Being a little short of cash considering due to enourmous vet bills these past few months I started giving her the thyroid med once a day and even skipping a day. WOW did she pack it back on fast. There is one thing positive about the fat ones besides being adorable, they are easier to catch and give them meds. I believe her thyroid level was 7 or 9. My vets could not find an average normal thyroid level specifically for gliders, but those numbers for most animals are considered low. They are going to take a sampling of some of my other normal weight gliders to figure out a norm. Because she lost weight on the med and gained it back when off I would say my vets are on the right track. And a couple of months ago she was seperated from her group because of a bad bite wound and I monitored how much I fed her, yet she did not lose weight. So you might want to try having blood work done for thyroid levels too.
