I know this has been discussed on here before but I can't for the life of me find it. I have wooden perches and the gliders love them...the only thing is the wood asorbs the odors so badly. I want to be able to extend the life a little more on them. Is there anything I can use to coat these for easy cleaning and not so much asorbtion?
Thanks in advance.

Don't know how to do the quick thing for you to click on to get there, but if you will go to the post "Natural Tree Branches - Smell" last post 10/31/05 on page 3 of this forum it has the information you need. Hope this helps.

You know, I was flipping though channels yesterday and saw a small portion of, and don't laugh, Martha Stewart's show and she was discussing how to keep a cutting board clean and sanitary. She uses the vinegar and water mixture and lemon rubbed on the board. I wonder if this process would help if applied to the branch?
Also, heard that you can actually spray hydrogen peroxide and water mixture to food to eliminate bacteria, wonder if this would help. Hopefully someone will come along and let us all know for sure.

Is it best to use fake branches? (For The cleanliness) or should we use real ones and just change out often due to the fact they like to chew? TIA

I also wanted to add that baking the branch again would bake the microorganizms that are causing the odor. Eliminating by baking is the safest way or just replace. I personally do not use the artificial branches, but I do have some artificial vines with leaves for my suggies to play with, with no metal for them to chew, they strip the leaves off and carry them to their pouch, it's very cute to watch them toting the little leaves!

Quote:
Unfortunately with the wooden branches we put inside the cage for them to play on, it is not a good idea to put any kind of coating on them due to the fact they like to chew on them. The best thing to do is to just replace them when needed. Yes you can wash them in between times however, with wood, no matter what you use, the pourousness of the wood will keep the urine and marking odor inside of them.

That was my concern. I have chewers...I mean they chew everything up.
I'll just keep a bunch of these things on stock I suppose.
thanks!

our babies chew everything- real plain wood, but the manzanita branches I wash- soak with a tiny bit of dish soap, then twice in regular water, once in vinegar water and one more time in regular water... long enough to get them clean and the smells gone... I do this whenever they start too smell too bad... I soak them every other time I clean toys in just hot water too... seems to help as well.. they are the one thing that gets stinky because I don't have the patience to clean them as often as I probably should so I wait till they start to smell first
