Sebastian saw the vet again today about his tail. It is healing, no infection, no dead tissue. But, it does seem to be developing some bad scar tissue and it could be a problem. Because the wound goes almost all the way around his tail, the scar tissue could develope so thick that it cuts off circulation to the end of his tail. If that happens, the end of the tail will die and have to be amputated. For now it is a waiting game. The vet also has cut the meds in half. The Metacam is keeping him from chewing on his tail but it also makes him sleep almost all the time. The vet is concerned that if he doesn't exercize his body will not process the nutrients (calcium specifically) properly and he could become sick from malnutrition. There is also the concern with him sleeping all the time of developing pneumonia. So, we are going to cut the meds and see if he will become more energetic and force him if I have to, to get some exercise to make sure his lungs stay healthy too. He has been such a good boy. He hates his meds but doesn't really fight me. He hasn't even tried to nip me but he does his best to squirm away from that syringe. Can't blame him, I bet it tastes nasty. He gets a bunch of mealies after the meds and I think he figured out real quick, that nasty stuff means mealies after. Mealies are mostly a treat here. They don't get them all that often so he is just really lovin it. He is still seperated from his cage mates and has to remain seperated until the tail is healed. I feel so bad for him because he really LOVES Whisper. When she was injured (mating wound)and they were kept seperated, he was miserable. When I put them together he would grab her and just rub his head all over her. I'm going to let them play together tonight and see how things go. As long as she doesn't mess with his tail, they should get about 2-3 hours of play time in. He sure needs the comfort only she can give him. There is only so much I can do for him. I have to say, if all gliders were as sweet and gentle as Sebastian, there would be few if any ever going into rescues. He is such an angel.

Teresa..ask the vet about a low dose valium suspension...it will kill pain, but also reduce anxiety, and may not knock him out as bad. It's what I used on Riker, and on William when he tore his scrotum post-neuter. It tastes just as bad, I'm sure, but the side effects may not be as bad. I would also let William and Troi be together in the bonding pouch on me, so I could watch, since he also had to be separated, and she was barking and crying nonstop and he wouldnt' settle down without her. It helped. And I'd keep two blankies in when they were together, and put one with each of them when apart and it seemed to help some. I'm so sorry you guys are going thru this, and hope he doesn't have to lose his tail. If he does, well..he does and we'll deal with it when it comes. In the meantime, heres Wish I was closer so I could help more!

Thanks Jen. Although you are not physically here, you have been such a comfort to me. Just knowing that I have you to turn to if I need. What I am going through with Sebastian is nothing compared to the journey you have been on with Riker and I saw for myself that little guy at the SGGA. This gives me more encouragement then you realize. If Riker and you can make that journey, the Sebastian and I will do just fine. Since he has not tried to mess with his tail at all since the initial attack, I'm going to reduce the meds and see how he does. If there is any problem, I can give him more of the meds and I'll then talk to the vet about the valium. I really don't what to have to do more drugs if I can avoid it. Did I say yet?

Well, I was thinking instead of the metacam..not in addition to it. The nice thing with the painkillers is, too, they will keep a year in your fridge, just in case they're needed later, unlike the antibiotics-so dont' throw them away if you have leftovers. Just know you guys are in my prayers and thoughts, and yes, you did, tho they're not necessary. As long as he ends up okay, that's all that matters.

Dancing I've been following the other thread, but hadn't gotten time to post yet. I just wanted to tell you that you and Sebastian are in my thoughts and prayers.

Sebastian and Reepicheep are so special to me. I'm so grateful and guilty that you're having to do all this extra care for them, Teresa. You know how much I thank you --

I reduced the meds like the vet said and he went after his tail again He now has a straw over it and wrapped up. I also gave him more meds (bringing it up to the original rx). This is the first time he has gone after it since this all started. If he pulls off the straw I will have little choice but the e-coller. I can only hope that the meds will get him to leave it alone and leave the straw on this time. Looks like another long sleepless night

Awww...Teresa. I'm sorry. I was hoping he wouldn't do that. If he tries to remove the straw, get the collar on..the combination will keep him from being able to get at it. If you need a call, PM your # (I'm at work and forgot my phone book, but I've got my cell and free night minutes) and I'll call. I know this isn't easy. Hang in there, and know we're here for you!

Thanks Jen. It's been about half an hour or so and he is leaving the straw alone and sleeping. Meds must have kicked in. I'm going set the alarm clock at half hour intervals and nap inbetween checking on him. (right next to the cage so I can hear him)
Oh, once again, he made no noise. I wonder if he even has any feeling in the tail at this point? He will let me manipulate it without any reaction. If that is the case, why did he go after it again?

Some gliders just don't make the noise. I don't think it's that there's no feeling, but maybe like some people, they're just better at gritting their teeth, so to speak. The survival instinct that makes them hide illness so well could be partly responsible. Or in his case, it's possible it's nerve pain, which can feel like an itch, ache, or tingle you can't scratch or rub out, but can drive you crazy without actually hurting, or not severely, just steadily. If you've ever had a back injury with nerve involvement like I have, you'll know, but it's really difficult to describe. It's hard to say, and would be SO much easier if they could tell us! But if he's going after it, you know there is discomfort of some kind there he feels he needs to attack in an attempt to make it go away-and they don't realize it's only making it worse. Such is the conundrum of SM. The painkillers will numb whatever is going on...and I do believe there is also a psychological component as well..one of the reasons I recommend the valium. He may need to stay in a collar until completely healed..like Riker did. It's hard to see them that way, but necessary. Again..I'm here if you need me, and will be on and off all night, okay?

Judie, he seems to have somehow injured his tail, and started chewing on it after. Not sure how the original injury happened. But in a nutshell, that's basically it.

Sorry to hear he started after his tail again. He may have some nerve damage that will not heal to the point it does not bother him. If it doesn't heal pretty soon you may have no other option except to go back to the next joint in the tail and amputate. Sometimes ligament or nerve damage just don't heal quickly. The Metacam shouldn't be making him lethargic. Maybe he is allergic to it or for some reason it is not right for him. I'm sort of scared of that stuff. I wouldn't give it for more than ten days. We don't use it for more than two or three days anymore. Maybe the pain med Jen mentioned or Torb will be a better option. Torb will make him lethargic though but is safer overall than the Metacam. I know none of us want to think about this but you should discuss amputation with your vet. It is obvious that there is more than just superficial damage. Charlie H

My vet said not to give Pika Metacam for more than 7 days. Also, Pika did not get really lethargic while on it. Charlie, Suz. Thank you for your input. I will talk to the vet. He has only been on the metacam for 5 days now. I talked to the vet initially about torb over metacam but the metacam also has an anti inflamitory property to it and the end of his tail was pretty swollen and the vet wanted to get the swelling down. We realize that amputation is a probablility. If not from this initial damage then from scar tissue later. (not sure exactly what "later" means though) He wanted me to wean him off the metacam by cutting the dose in half and well, that didn't work so well. I am going to reduce it to 3/4 for today and keep him on me non stop and see if he will leave his tail alone. If that doesn't work, I'll go see the vet again in the morning. We are due to go back on tuesday but I won't hessitate if needed before then. I agree (mainly because I can see the tail and the damage) that there is probably nerve damage. Can anyone tell me exactly what the vets do when they amputate? Do they just snip it off and let it heal? or do they stitch the end shut? caterize it?
