Does anyone know how safe panacur is in an 8 week oop joey? I ask because the vet has treated all my gliders with panacur for giardia. Except she wouldn't treat mom, dad and baby because it wasn't safe for the joey. She chose panacur because it was safer than flagyl.

Now I need to treat mom, dad, baby and she wants to use flagyl on the baby and panacur on the parents. I'm just concerned because the vet and I differ on actual oop dates and I am not sure I feel 100% comfortable with her.

for years we have used the metro....(generic for of flagyl) for giardia, we have used it on young gliders as well as pregnant nursing moms.

I have had a lot of experience with sm's on the panacure, the panacure is harder on a gliders system, is it more effective maybe, but it is also hard on their system,

if the vet feels comfortable using the flagyl with the joey, then why not just use it across the board, rather than 2 different drugs?

as for safe, they are both safe, they are both used as an anti-parasitic, they are both effective. but I would try to go with something that they all could take safely

We have never used ivermectin for giardia, and I don't know if that would be as effective either, it too is hard on a gliders system, but it is given in a dose now and a dose 2 weeks later. it may be something you may want to ask your vet about. I do know however that the ivermectin is far to powerful for the young joey.

My vet said that panacure does not work on Giardia. She also checked with VIN (Veterinary Information Network) when Kira was having a reaction to Flagyl and they told her that there is NO OTHER medication that can treat Giardia in the US but Flagyl/metronidazole. Just thought I would let you know.

The only knowledge I have about Panacur is that my vet told me it was completely safe to use on all of my gliders, joeys included, when I treated my crew. I had four joeys under eight weeks old that were treated with it under vets orders and all are just fine. It was a small dose though and it was only for a few days.

I was not treating for Giardia.

My 4 were treated with panacur and I know of other people who have treated giardia with panacur and it has worked.

I got flagyl for mom, dad and baby. It's such a tiny dose I have trouble giving it to them.

I had to use Panacur for roundworms and Flagyl for Giardia with Isabella.

Panacur - Is only marginally absorbed after oral adminstration. Fenbendazole is considered safe to use in pregnant mothers and is generally considered safe to use in pregnancy for all species.

Flagyl - is relativly well absorbed from the gut and has a low first pass effect. Because mexailtine is secreted into maternal milk, it has been recomended to use milk replacer if the mother is taking the drug.

That all being said there is no (none that I could find) scientific studies performed on either drug in these situations.

Glider friendly vets should know this and use thier best judgement based on actual experiance and the situation at hand. Not all cases are the same.
