just curious...what are the odds of getting an albino joey out of a normal grey pair with no history of albinism?

There has been one person who got 2 gliders from a pet store that have made albinos. He just got two and they happened to be the right pair. But like Srlb said, it is like your chances of winning the lottary! If you know the family history and there is no albinos in it then it is even more unlikely that you will have an albino joey

If some one is really trying to produce albinos I would recomend buying some lesser hets 25%-66% and maybe even dish out the extra cash for a 100% het - trying to get some what unrelated or very distant lines to eachother, to avoid inbreeding. There is still not a 100% chance you'd get an albino from a lesser het pairing, but there is a CHANCE of it happening. Snowflake Sheila's (50%?) I think she was a 50% het, some one will correct me if I'm wrong I'm sure, just produced an albino. You also have to be USDA licensed to breed for this color with the 100% hets.

Yes I agree with everyone. In order to produce an albino both parents must carry the albino gene. Very unlikly that your going to go out and buy any two random gliders and get two with the albino gene.

Kikster, you do not have to be USDA licensed to breed for any color of glider. Most breeders will not sell their albinos, BEW, or other rare colors to someone unless they are licensed though.

I figured it would be more common than that though, since albinism seems to occur alot *and randomly* in a few different species of small animals like bunnies, and guinea pigs, and hamsters and stuff. *btw, I know gliders aren't rodents. just wanted to say that since I listed all rodents* of course, it seems that gliders are a bit uh..different from other animals.
so let's say if you had one 66% het for albino, and one normal, could you still maybe get an albino?

No. Both gliders have to carry the gene. You could, however, get an albino from two 50-66% hets. Of course, if you did end up with an albino joey, that would make both of the parents 100% hets.

You would not have very good chances, maybe none. No matter what color glider babies are sooo fun.

Lol Dancing, I didn't say you had to be USDA Lic. to breed for any color, I said you had to be USDA Lic. to buy 100% hets for albino. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wave.gif" alt="" />
