So I was snooping (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets's site and they had an instructional thing about Giardia with their new babies and what to do. They say all gliders have Giardia but it only 'blooms' with stress. Is this true? They also instruct if their sold babies have 'sticky poop' than it's a sign they have giardia and that yogurt, glitamins, and pepto will get rid of it. Does yogurt and Pepto really get rid of it?
Mine had Giardia, very traumatizing for me. After treatment and a second visit, the vet gave us the thumbs up but will they ALWAYS have it now? Dormant? I'm confused.

no... the yogurt is good for stress yes....
pepto is to hepl settle the tummy, the pepto will not i repeat NOT make the giarda go away that can only be done with meds. they know that giardia is a huge problem with them, so they are covering their butt. or shall I say trying

Ok...Mine were on Metronadazol(spelling?)and it fixed them for now...but, still want to know if 'All gliders carry the giardia bacteria'...as (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets says.

(PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets is wrong about giardia being a bacteria. It is a parasite. Not all gliders carry it.

the last vet we took cosmos to said that all gliders have giardia, in the dormant state. he did say it was a parasite, also. he says that breakouts occur when the glider is under the most severest stress.
the vet was on the younger side, age wise, & larry felt he was probably telling the truth, because vets are learning so much more now a days.

Not all gliders "have" giardia. Problem is they can be asymptomatic carriers (and also test negative) UNTIL stressed and then become very sick from the parasite. Giardia is very contagious, and has an active stage and cyst stage.

Gliders, other animals, even people can become infected with this bug from poorly/not washed produce or even water sources. To properly "screen out" giardia I believe its a 1 micron filter needed.

Let's start here...Not all gliders carry Giardia in their system all of the time. BUT, after a glider has an active infection, just like human's, they can shed the cysts (dormant state of the parasite) for up to 6 months. If they get stressed out or their (or their cage mate's) immune system is compromised during that time, this can start an active infection again. BTW, 'stress' does not technically cause Giardia, but stress depresses the immune system and changes the chemical and/or pH in the small intestine (can't recall exactly), but the changes in the small intestine cause the cysts to break open and the decreased immune system is why the body can't fight the Giardia off and an infection/infestation becomes active.

Also important to note, if you have a glider with a chronically depressed immune system (chronically ill animal), the Giardia can become chronic (or at least chronic carriers) as well, simply because the animal cannot fight off the infection completely (even with the help of proper meds).

Because animals (and people) can shed the dormant cysts for some time after active infection, your vet can actually run a fecal and SEE the cysts present (but no trophs). If trophs are present in ANY amount, this is an active infection, although some samples may have just a couple of trophs and from a really sick animal, you may see dozens (or more). Even with trophs present, however, you may not be seeing a sick animal yet, which is why quarantine and repeated fecals are so important.

Something else to consider, we are all surrounded by and come in contact with Giardia on a regular basis (in our water supply, on our food, in the local swimming pool) but our immune systems are generally strong enough to fight it off (that and we follow good hygiene). If we are not careful about washing our hands before (and after) handling our animals and washing/peeling their fruits/veggies well and being meticulous about our water supply, we can introduce Giardia to them....and just so you know, even if you try to do all of those things, it still may happen.

If you have a glider in a cage test positive, the entire cage needs to be treated (as well as their cage cleaned exceedingly well) or they can pass it back and forth.

If you do have a glider test positive, you need to recheck fecals in a few weeks after the treatment ends (this will depend on your vet). And even if your vet doesn't think it is necessary, please have fecals rechecked every three months for the first 9 months following. If they come back clear each time, then check them (twice a year is best) but at least once a year.

If people do not have their animals checked for parasites regularly, yet take them to get-togethers, they are putting us all (and all of our babies) at risk. Fecals are not expensive, your vet can even do two on a slide. Some do floats, some do smears, my vet prefers to do a direct smear, as she thinks this catches it better, but you will have to discuss that with your vet (I know there are differing opinions).

Metronidazole/Flagyl is the ONLY medication that treats Giardia in the US. My vet has asked on VIN (Veterinary Information Network) to confirm and every single response (of which she got many) confirmed it.

Pepto - Please do not, under any circumstances give your glider Pepto. It used to be that Kaopectate was something safe to give an animal, but they changed their formula and it now contains aspirin and is absolutely not safe. I am unsure if Pepto changed their formula to include aspirin (or something similar) or if it has always been this way. But I have always been told to NEVER give Pepto, and now am told NEVER Kaopectate either.

Wow thanks everyone!
Gretchen...thanx for breaking it down in such a detailed manner. I understand a lot better now. When Bindi first got tested positive, we treated for 10 days, (both of them) brought them back, got the all clear. My vet said it wasn't necessary to retest but I made an appointment for 60 days due to my huge paranoia.
I joked with Kinue about my hands literally cracking from all the bleaching (which even though it's been a couple weeks since the retest...I'm still in bleaching mode, fewer and farther between but their toys I soak every other day.
Hopefully it is over...I thought 2 months they laid dormant but 6?? That's a bummer.

Thanks again!!!

when gizmo died, the vet couldn't find anything wrong. a few weeks later, we got another glider, never knew of the quarantine time for them, did intros real slow, but did it all in a week. then, sissie gets sick, & the vet says giardia. cosmos was neg. we gave them both med. the last nite of the first week of med, & sissie dies.
we go back to the vet, do a smear & float, & cosmos was still neg. vet no longer wanted to see gliders, was transfered to another vet, went to see him, did a float & smear, & for the 3rd time came out neg. that is when the new vet told us of gliders being 'carriers' of the parasite.
but through all of this, cosmos never show'd positive.
the poor thing had to go thru so much, i'm just so greatful he is still alive. he doesn't like it much, but i call him my baby, even though he is bonding w/larry better than me!!
