Oh no!
So sad for your loss. (huggie)

How is the other joey? Keep a close eye on that one, just in case.

he was cannabalized, no flesh... I don't know what that means... yes this is their first joey. I noticed the baby was out earlier in the day while spending time with Nina and Gizmo, then last night I took their nest in their tent and let the parents play and fed them mealworms they let me baby sit and came over to check anytime he cried then dad seemed anxious and came over, the joey tryed to latch on to him but didn't get a good grip. dad crawled into the nest and I put the joey in by him I heard him crab a little so mom went in came back out and let me pet her, something she never never has let me do she just sat there and let me pet her she really enjoyed it then this morning I wanted to know if it was a boy or girl so I went in the nest and he was gone... I don't know what happend.... is this my fault, I even washed my hands carefully before holding the joey and let mom and dad be right there...

I don't think anyone ever really has a definate reason. It could be that being the first baby Mama and Daddy just werent sure what to do.. It happens sometimes with a 1st joey, since they are new parents it is more stress that some can endure. I am sure that it isn't your fault. It is even possible that something just wasnt right with this joey and Mama and dad knew it and nature took its course. Either way there really wasn't anything you could have done, plase dont blame yourself. Im very sorry for your loss.... Since I am exopecting my first joey myself I am not able to give you the benefit of experience but maybe someone else here will. Again This IS NOT your fault....

(((HUGS))) So so sorry this happened. My kids haven't had any kids, so I have no experience with that either. I do see on the board though that it does happen. This is NOT your fault. Nature takes a course with our animals although we tend to think of them as our kids..they are still wild animals. More than likely, something was wrong with the baby..that's a usual reason for this to happen. It's their way of not allowing suffering. Again, I'm so sorry this happened. God Bless and take care..only time will help heal your pain.

Another possibility could be the mommas diet. What were you feeding her? If she wasn't getting enough protien and calcium then her mild supply may not have been replenishing itself causing her to know that she wouldn't have enough milk to nurse the baby.

It does happen and when it does it is very sad. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> I would let them breed again and if they canabalize the joey again then I would have dad fixed so the mom doesn't have to go through the stress of everything

I was feeding her BML mix and 10-15 mealwormes a night and ofcoarse fruits and veggies, peas, corn (only a little) lima beans, mealons, plums, green beans, graps, celery, and lots of other fruits in a mix that I cut up once a month, freeze onto baking pans and bag. from what I read the extra protein for milk could be added by adding more insects to her meal, I thought 15 was more than enough... Gosh I'm so sorry, Thank you so much everyone for all of you thoughts and hugs. I don't understand why they would cannabolize him now, after he's out of pouch, why would they wait?

NEW DEVELOPMENT... she has another baby in her pouch any one know if this means anything? I just took her out to give her new bedding becuase I threw out the stuff with little peanut in it and noticed I felt a little lump I rolled her over and sticking out of her pouch was a little foot... I am not sure what to do, seperate her from dad maybe do you think she could have been overwhelmed because he wanted to breed more and she had to much stress what about a diet please help me I don't know what I'll do if this happens again... Thank you

I wouldn't take the joey from mom and dad. You may consider to supplement feed the joey with baby BML (reg bml without eggshell and wheat germ), and wombaroo replacement milk (puppy replacemnt works too). It takes some of the stress off of mom until she can produce enough milk for the joey. Give mom some too as it helps her keep nourished. What I do is just pour some extra wombaroo or sprinkle on top of her BML during the lactation process. Also extra proteins and calcium are very important to keep her milk supply ample. She may not have been able to feed both joeys...keep a close watch for signs of rejection and follow Suz's and the Critterville instructions and you'll do fine.
It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to get materials for an incubator set up just in case you need it for rescue. Here's Suz's here and here's critterville here.

I meant to add that Dad will participate in raising the joey so without him it could stress mom out totally if he is removed. Please leave them all together for now unless you see signs of rejection...... at that point then you may have to take the joey and hand raise him/her, but let's hope that you don't have to do that. I'm crossing my fingers for them!

Sorry I didn't mention that above!

I hope all is well, and please keep us updated!

sounds like maybe the other one just came off the nipple too soon for some reason and mom and dad took care of it so to speak. I would leave things the way they are and let mom and dad take care of things. If you see them going after the joey than make a move then but give them a chance first.

okay I am confused about a few things, both sites helped alot, after reading I feel the reason Nina and Gizmo rejected little Peanut was because of to much stress and because he came off his nipple to early. I had heard him crying very often for food the last two days and he seemed very skinny the night I held him. I understand now what I can do but I have some questions. How will I know if they are going after this new joey who isn't even oop yet. My female glider is very vocal and crabs alot the way it is. I don't want to stress her out by going in her cage to often and yet I want to make sure this baby is okay... Also you said to sprinkle the puppy formula over Nina's BML first of all I think I have been feeding her the wrong reciepe, from what I've read it sounds like I was feeding her baby BML with the egg shell, how should I correct this? Also you say sprinkle do you mean the dry formula or mixed? How often should I try to give mom a break from nursing. What can I use as another source to increase her calcium and protein besides meal worms and puppy formula? Is it likley that she would reject the baby still in her pouch? I am sorry for all these questions but I don't want to loose this little guy (Almond) It might be easier if someone could call me... If anyone would be willing please PM me and I will give you my phone # or visa versa. Thank you sooo very much

I just checked in on Nina and noticed that her pouch looks funny, it almost looks like she has a pom does this mean her pouch is infected? Some one please call me.
