I am neutering a lot of gliders that I have and making a large colony out of them.. The cage that I should have coming is 9 feet by 9 feet by 8 feet.. I'm just wondering how many gliders could comfortably live in this...

Everything that I put in thie cage will be determined on how many gliders are living in it. I have to figure out feeding stations, water bottles, wheels, pouches, and all that great stuff!

Pics coming soon.

And I thought I had big cages!!! I just have to ask Linda, Where are you going to be putting that size of a cage? I would love to make one larger than the ones I already have but my ceilings are only 8 foot high soooo.... I am sure you can put several in a cage that size, however, everything I read online about them in the wild says that the colony size is normally around 7-9.

Cant wait to see pics!!

I'm interested too. Wild colonies are usually 7-9 but that is without males being neutered.

Thanks for your replies.

We have a 2 story house.. originally there were 9 people living here, my aunt and her boyfriend had the bonus room as their bedroom... it's been like this for 8 years, a house full of 9 people! lol Last weekend my aunt and her boyfriend moved out so the bonus room is empty... and my sister is getting married so she is also going to be moving out. Now with only 6 people in the house everyone is switching rooms and the bonus room is empty... I don't know if anyone knows what a bonus room is, basically it's a HUGE room above the garage, it's just as big as the garage and the ceiling is at least 12 feet high. There is no attic above the bonus room like there is above all the other rooms in the house, making the ceiling much higher than the others.

So I figure that if I'm going to make a colony out of my kids that I might as well do it the RIGHT way!

With the cage being so big I can walk inside and play with them, and I think that would be a MUCH too dangerous environment for any joeys to be in. Not to mention that with all the pouches, toys, and hiding spots that are going to be in the cage it would be too easy for a joey to get lost or fall 8 feet to the ground! So this colony will be of all my retired gliders.

I'm really excited.. I was hoping to get 9-11 gliders in it.. if they all can get along!!

Linda, that's awesome! I had a friend that had a colony of 13. She split them into 2 groups (males/females) because the females were baby stealing (all the males were intact). I think that if you have more passive gliders, you could have 20+ gliders in a cage that size. It all just depends on what your gliders are willing to accept.

That sounds like it is going to be a glider paradise. You hit on the key phrase though, "if they can all get along".
With a cage that large and multiple sleeping and eating places it should be easier than in the smaller cages. It's obvious that you already know you may have to do some seperating. This should be very interesting though. Would be great to have a colony that large and watch them interact.

What you gonna do if they all decide they want to sleep together? You will need a pouch the size of a pillow case! Lots of possibalities here. Bet you are gonna have a great time with this project. At least until it is cleaning day

*we always called the bonus room a rumpus room because it was above the garage and stomping feet wouldn't bother those downstairs.

I can't wait to follow your progress with the new colony. How exciting!

20+ gliders??? lol

Maybe I'll keep 11 in it and save the rest of the room for my dream of getting a Squirrel Glider!

This colony thing is going to take a lot of time and it'll be pricey.. I have to neuter all the males...wait for thier hormones to calm down (about a month I'd say)... and then start introducing them all.

If they all wanted to sleep together, that would be AWESOME. I could only imagine if one of them started to crab though, it would sound like a swarm of bees if they all got started!!

Anyway... I'm still waiting for photos. The guy who has the cage said 2-3 days so I should have them soon..

Lol, you think I'm nuts for saying 20 gliders, but I've had glider play time with 17 gliders at once. It was crazy, but it was a blast... My glider room is about 10x14x6 with an angled roof. The gliders were everywhere, but I had a couple intact males running around and for the most part, they avoided eachother. It was a lot of fun, I wish I could still do that.
