I made a cage cover for Sugar and Spandex today. I put it on their cage, and tonight now that they are up, the area around their cage smells so bad, I checked the cage to be sure everyone was in one piece. It will knock you back. I wiped down the cage with a white wash cloth and some water, nothing. There is no diarrhea in the cage pan or the pouch. The only thing I can think of is they don't like the cage cover, or it doesn't smell enough like them? Any ideas?

Something new around and they are going to make sure every inch of it smells like them!! They can be overpowering like that for sure. I know when I put something of any size in their cage it is going to smell to high heaven!! At least for a day or two.

what is the cover made of? I used a fabic that I found at walmart that has a vinyl side and a cottony side. I haven't noticed a problem with it. I wipe down the vinyl side when I clean the cage. I chose it because it doesn't hold smells as much as fleece. My boy is neutered also so he doesn't smell everything up like him also. If you are interested in the fabric ask for the tablecloth covers. They are on a big roll and they come in lots of colors. I have a tie dyed pattern so it matches the cage.

This is just fabric. I took their other one off, I am switching their cages today, into a bigger one, and I wanted as much of their stuff as possible to smell like them, so I put the bigger cover on their cage last night. It doesn't smell today, so they must have calmed down some. Whew! It was bad, really bad.
I like that clear vinyl they have at Wal Mart, it is so easy to clean! That's whats on my walls.

I do too Shawna, except I have the clear vinyl around the sides and back of my cages to cut down on mess and drafts....they still have the tops and the fronts open for ventilation. Boy what a difference in the "let's scatter every crumb mommy gives us" syndrome. Dramatically helped with clean up and such...

Yeah, I pulled all the cages out of their room today and scrubbed walls, and cages, there was food everywhere! So, I have cage covers for about half of my cages now.

Yha… The first time I got to the walls… what a mess… I was glad no one else was home to see the walls before I finished cleaning…

The gliders will probably settle down. They were probably just reacting to the changes. Wanted to make everything smell like it belonged to them.

The cage covers are great for protecting the walls and giving the gliders a sense of security. But the floors are a different situation. The little rascals are going to manage to get food on the floor. The clear carpet runners that you can get at Home Depot are pretty good but not very wide. For large cages the heavy gauge clear plastic would probably work better but watch out for slips. When you step on the stuff it can get out from under you in a hurry. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />
