So apparently I have scabies, and my doctor said it can come from dogs. I don't think he's right because a lot of websites say dogs get a different form of it. I asked him if it could come from my sugar glider possibly, and of course he had no idea what a sugar glider was.

Has anyone ever heard of a sugar glider giving a person scabies? Is that possible?

On a side note i took all the medication and apparently its gone, but i cant stop playing with my glider or he'll get sad... so i need help ASAP if anyone has any clue. Thank you so much!

PS- even if he doesnt have it he still stinks pretty bad, so i'd also appreciate any cleaning tips. I'm a first-time owner so i'm still figuring everything out. Thanks again

He may stink because of his diet, or if he is unneutured. Males mark their things with their scent. I have never heard of a glider having that or passing it on, and youd have to wonder where he got it in the first place? If he is a lone glider you might want to get him another one for days when you cant play, but you still need to play with the both of them just as much. (Also, over-cleaning his things can lead to him over-marking his things.)

ok well yea i was assuming it wasn't him, but i figure it can't hurt to be too careful about it. actually though i haven't been over-cleaning because i read about what you were saying. How often do you think is a good amount to clean the cage though? I've probably been doing it every 1-2 weeks

Each Sunday I completely clean the cage, spray it down and all, about every other day I change the newspaper in the drop tray thingy, and I switch the pouches about every four days or so. My boy is developing his bald spot right now so the smell is just now developing and the only things he marks is me and Karma. But I heard that lonelyness can also cause stink, but I'm not really sure about that.

Oh my! Scabies... Maybe you should ask your vet about that. We studied those little mites in first year. I do know that they are fairly species specific, and you're right: canine scabies can cause human scabies symptoms, but it is a totally different mite species from human scabies (i.e. Sarcoptes scabiei) and will not breed in your body but in the dog's (then they jump on you and the females burrow into your skin).

Again, consult your vet, but I doubt you received the scabies from your glider. Did you just get your glider? Perhaps the one who sold it to you had scabies... they can survive out of the human host for about 2 days or so, and are capable of infecting a vector host (your glider, I suppose in this case).

ok thanks again... im pretty confident that i must have just got it at the gym or on a bus or something. at least my glider still plays with me, because my girlfriend won't come within 5 feet of me. Haha how ironic... i'm the one getting depressed because of lonliness and he has to keep me company

SCABIES!! Whew, I had a terrible time with that diagnosis once. My mom got it and my bf was visiting so the entire family had to do the whole scrub down thing with that gross cream and wash everything, bag all the bedding, and so on and so forth. After treating it FIVE times, turns out it wasn't scabies at all but a dry skin condition my mother had combined with an allergy to petroleum (which I inherited, thanks Mom!).

I know what that's like!!! I've never had scabies but..... once my wife took in a stray kitten that had some......um......er....... skin problems. It passed this bizarre fungus on to us that we fought for over 5 YEARS!!!!!! %$*%$@%#!!!!!! Biggest problem was NOBODY knew what it was!! Not one single doctor could identify it! No dermatologist, no doctor, no disease specialist, nobody! Every doctor told us the same thing.... "I have never seen anything like this before." Then, many years on down the road, with the whole family fighting this off for years, a vet finally identified it, told our family doctor what it was and he prescribed us this medication that even he had never heard of. After 5 years of suffering, we were cured in 3 days thanks to a vet! WOWOWOW!!! Give your fuzzbutt some love and tell your "significant other" they could learn something from your sugar loving friend.

haha well thanks again for all your advice. i just took a second helping of that lotion to my body and re-cleaned everyting in my room. so it should be dead and gone this time.

i never knew about this disease before i had it. but from what i've read recently, i believe this is probably the worst disease that is easily spreadable. Apparently you can have it for 4-6 weeks before seeing symptoms, and in that time give it to other people. You have to wash everything you've touched, as does anyone close to you. And worst of all you get covered in tons of basically ant bites, which you cant even touch. And i just LOVE the fact that they flare up at night and in the shower!

It is so easy to spread. Sitting on a chair, giving someone a hug. Just brief contact with someone can spread scabies. It really is awful and so hard to get rid of.

The mites that live on pets are species specific and will only live on people for a few days. There is little danger that you got scabies from your glider or that the mites will transfer from you to the glider. You are probably suspecting the gym as the place you got them.

Sarcoptic Mites can spread from dog to person. They will reproduce on a dog but not on a person. But they can still burrow down in a person's skin and it itches horribly! I work a humane society so unfortunatly I have experienced this first hand.) Typically the dog needs to be treated with shots once every 3-4 weeks for 3 months. And it normally does a great job. For people sometimes your doctor can give you something for it, but they will die off as long as the dog is being treated.
Here's some more info about it: http://www.thepetcenter.com/exa/mites.html

I agree that people can get the mites from an animal but the mites they get from any animal will die off on a healthy human without treatment in 7 to 10 days. If course this will not work if you are continually being exposed.
