I noticed that Sweet Pea, my female was acting really strange tonight. She has her ears down and her eyes are never fully open. She looks half asleep. She's really weak, her balance seems poor and she's shaking a bit. She also seems to be cooler than usual.I gave her some watermelon to eat thinking she might be hungry. She ate that and some cantaloupe, but in extreme slow motion. I have to make new BML, because their old stuff has become crystaly and they won't eat it that way. I haven't seen her poop, so I'm unsure about her stool. There is no late night vet around here, but she will be going ASAP. Please help, I don't want to lose her. Should I stay up and watch her?

It sounds like she is lethargic, and she should be taken to a vet ASAP. If you can't get there try and get some fluids down her and keep her warm. It could be a calcium deficiency, I really have no experience in this area. I hope somebody comes to help you soon! Prayers are being sent for Sweet Pea!

Oh boy....you need to get your glider to an Emerg Clinic if possible tonight. She more than likly is severly dehydrated which is secondary to another illness. Warm her up by putting her into a pouch and tuck inside your shirt as your body temp will help warm her up. If the Emerg clinic can at least rehydrate her now...and show you how to continue to do so at home this would be your best option for now. Then in the morning...take her to your reg vet for a fecal smear and float as well as a UA. Continue to keep glider hydrated for several days till she is taking in enough fluids to hold her own and warm. Use a heating pad if you have to in part of her cage and set the sleeping pouch on it so it will become warm but not hot.

How long have the gliders not been eating the BML?

I had her out while I was posting and I gave her some apple to chew on and she actually seemed to perk up quite a bit. she just sat on my shoulder and chewed on the apple ( at normal speed. Don't get me wrong, I'm still concerned and will be taking her to the vet. But it made me feel a little better. I'm still concerned and don't want to go to bed. Should I stay up to observe her? Thanks for all the concern and helpful comments so far. How would she get dehydrated? They have a water bottle and get lots of fruit in their diet, so I assumed they would be getting ample moisture. Thanks again for all your help guys and gals.

Gliders become dehydrated from being sick. Either from not enough moisture being taken in or the illness itself causes the glider to loose fluids.

It is possible she is dehydrated and suffering from low blood sugar. Offer her whatever she will eat for tonight that is high in fluids. Keep her warm. And get her to the vet first thing in the morning.

A glider who is severly ill...will have it's ears flat down on their head...thus giving the appearance of being severly depressed. You can check for dehydration by pulling the fur up accross the shoulders. If it stands up(looks like a tent)then she is dehydrated. If it snaps back..glider is ok for now.

Go to bed..perhaps setting your clock for every three hours to check on how she is doing for tonight. vet care in the am.

I know you must be worried sick. I believe I would stay up with her, but that's just me. I'm no where near experienced enough to tell you any medical advice, but I do think that she should be supervised until you can get to a vet. Is there an emergency vet that you could at least talk to on the phone? Even if there isn't one that deals with gliders near you it may be possible to talk to one long distance to find out the best advice. You may could even get them to find you the closest animal hospital that does stay open all night and deals with gliders. I'm sending you good vibes!!! Keep us updated on her.

Hope your baby is doing better. You're both in my thoughts.

Is there a teaching veterinary hospital near you? When I lived in TN, I was able to take my girls to the UT vet School Hospital. It was great. They had an emergency number one could call after hours.

Remember that when things go wrong with these little ones, they go wrong quickly. If you're nervous or unsure, get to the vet for a second opinion. Trust your maternal instincts. They depend on us the way a baby depends on it's parents. Follow your heart (and gut) and you can't go wrong.

First off thanks a lot everybody. It's nice to know you all care so much and wish us the best. So here is the update...unfortunately the vets in my town (Lloydminster,AB) are not a lot of help. They don't deal with exotic animals. I'm going to be making some long distance calls to Edmonton, AB and Calgary AB and hopefully I can get more help there. As far as the vets in town knew, it sounded like dehydration which seems to be the general consensus on this board. I hope that's all it turns out to be and I'm able to turn her around. She does seem more like herself today, but she still seems quite tired and weak. At least she isn't shaking anymore....that was really scary. I started administering pediolite this morning, I'm keeping her warm, and she's getting plenty of TLC. I took her to work with me so I could keep a close eye on her. The strange thing is she doesn't want anything to do with her pouch, instead she is sleeping on me or between my shirts much more than usual. I'm sure I was pretty useless at work today lol, but I'm not too concerned about that. I just want my baby to be OK again. I weighed her today, she's a whopping .05 kg. lol. Like I said, she's not avery big eater, but is that too light for a 1 year old glider? Thanks again, I'll keep you all posted...

I'm glad that she's doing okay!

Perhaps she would rather sleep on you because your body temperature is a lot warmer than her pouch...

Another strange thing that I didn't mention in my update is that she's been awake almost all day with only a few quick naps in the crook of my neck.

I'm not good at math (at all!), so I don't know what .05 kg equals, but a full growth female glider is usually only 4 or 5 ozs. I'm sure she's fine in body weight.

Also, she may be sleeping more on you and just taking naps because she doesn't feel well and so can't sleep very well. I'm not sure though. But most animals (including humans) don't sleep too well when they are trying to recover from a sickness. Hopefully somebody else can help you more with this issue...and Aesop, Valor and I are happy to hear that she's getting better...

When I had my girl at the vet's a few days ago, she weighed in at 96 grams. Which is rather rotund. My vet said he usually sees females in the 60-70 gram range, but some gliders are a little bigger.

Glad to hear she's doing better. Keep lovin' on her and holding her. She'll perk up.

[:"blue"] Glider Greetings:

0.05 KG is 50 grams. That's pretty light for a year old female.
The lightest female on Ushuais's weight study for a female of that age is around 70 grams.

[:"purple"] Link Fidget 3: [:"blue"] You may not be out of the woods yet. Gliders are very good at hiding illness. Even though your local vet is not familiar with gliders, the tests that Judie suggested are standard tests that any vet should be able to perform and interpret. If you wait too long to visit with a distant vet, you may have a problem. Basic care by a general vet is a whole bunch better than no care by distant exotic vet.

Yes, 50 grams is small, but there are smaller gliders, I have one that averages 68, but has been smaller, like around 60. She was around 60 for a long time. I would see what the vet says about her weight, part of it is probably being sick. See what the vet says before you get worried, right now you need to get her well, then worry about her weight!

If you have a vet willing to learn about gliders, we have a mailing list here for vets (if your vet is a computer person!). See Mailing List at the bottom of the page.

Or, there are vets who are willing to consult with other vets about gliders over the phone.

Some thoughts:

I hope that dehydration is the only problem your glider was having. Do you know how to "tent" the back of the glider's neck to see if she's still dehydrated?

There's a reason a glider dehydrates. Unless you know why the glider was dehydrated, it will probably happen again. Did the vet do a fecal smear and float?

Please keep us posted about your little girl and how she's doing as you continue to seek the help she needs!

Hi everybody. I just wanted to update you as to how things are going. Sweet Pea is going to the vet tomorrow for fecal tests and a UA. I just wanted to know if there was anything else that should be done. I believe what happened was that Charlie, being the little piggy that he is, has been keeping her from eating causing her to develope a deficiency or deficiencies. When I get the results from the vet I'll be sure to post them. Thanks again for all the help and well wishes you people have given us. I'll post again when I know more.

My heart is broken...Sweet Pea passed away today at the vet clinic. The vet said they had just started administering fluids under the skin and she had a heart attack. I have to pick up her body later today. They were going to do an autopsy to make sure it wasn't anything that could be transfered to Charlie. I'm going to have her cremated. I'm having a really tough time right now. I feel like I failed her by not taking her to the vet sooner, but I simply couldn't because of work. If anyone ever notices something anything the least bit wrong with their babies, take them to the vet NOW! Don't let the same thing happen to you or your loved ones. I only hope this doesn't affect Charlie (my male) to severely. I took away his girlfriend and now I can never reunite them. Thanks again for all the help and well wishes.

Just wanted to make one last post...
It turns out that Sweet Pea had a congenital condition called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. Essentially this means her heart had problems moving the blood around her body. Because of this she had an abnormally large heart and this constricted the flow even further. This was the reason she was so small even before she started deteriorating. The one good thing is that Charlie is safe at least. I read that poem/story The Rainbow Bridge...it was a nice thing to read. I'll never scoff at Friday the 13th ever again!

My heart is with you - I'm so very sorry Sweet Pea will be there waiting..... May your heart heal quickly -take care of Charlie - he will be missing her terribly, also. Don't be so hard on yourself - you did what you could and that is what counts, Sweet Pea knows that and is now running and playing while awaiting your arrival.

Thank you for posting the results of the necropsy. My heart just hurts for you. This is so sad, and I know how it feels. Just be close to Charlie and love on him a lot. Know you have a family of people here who understand what you're going through and are here to support you!
