For those w/ large cages, how do u clean them? My new cage is almost done and its really big about 5'. How do I clean it?
I'm thinking I'll take it outside and spray it w/ a hose, but as it is now I wipe the cages daily w/ a vingegar/ water solution. Im thinking a daily cleaning will be nearly impossible w/ a large cage. But they r so messy w/ their food...

Abby, I use those Lysol wipes and do a quick wipe down. If you have un neutered boys, they will go crazy marking the whole cage even more if you clean everything at once. LOL I do it when they are sleeping and it takes like 15 seconds to dry. Hope this helps

I have a 5' cage.... It takes me about 2 hours to thoroughly clean it I'm sure if I were to wipe it down every day it would still take me at least a half hour every time.
I also use a vinegar/water solution. I love Clorox wipes but just not for cage cleaning. They always leave a sudsiness behind for me.
If I were in a house -instead of a 3rd floor apartment- I'd take it outside & hose it down. That's what we do with Chad's cage at his place, it's not quite as tall but its big. It's virtually impossible to do that here- not to mention there's a foot of snow!
I usually use Dawn dishsoap if it's being hosed down, and then vinegar for inside cleanings... I prefer hosing it down! It's so much easier, just suds it up, stand there, and spray!

I use a steam cleaner... it takes me 2 hours to steam both cages... and I do that once a week.. in between I change the cloth stuff out and the toys sometimes but I don't clean the cage itself.. and anything removable gets soaked in Dawn in the tub and rinsed with the shower head..

During the summer, I take the two big cages outside for a hose-down. I prefer to take them out when it is raining outside and let the rain do its job for me!
Over the winter, I wipe the cage down with plain hot water. I am scared to use those Clorox wipes or anything that has additives in it. I lost two gliders to jaundice (reasons were unknown).
I have a question about steaming, though. Would excessive steaming eventually damage the pvc coating on the wire, over an extended period of time? You know, hot and cold, hot and cold, and the pvc is plastic, and it would eventually break or chip?

I have a cage that I can’t get out of the room it is in…. it is big…. I do a once a week cleaning with a steam cleaner, my cage is powder coated, and I have only had it for a few months…. So I am not sure if the steaming is going to cause a problem, I steam, wipe everything down, removable toys and stuff go in the tub as noted, pouches go into the washer, along with the fleece I line the bottom with, the bottom is changed out every day, with wipe downs as needed during the week, and at mid week I swap out about half the pouches

For my 5' cage i use clorox wipes and go over it again with a hot wet rag to get rid of the suds. My 3' cage gets put in the shower now cuz its too cold to take it outside, And get washed with dawn dishsoap. I have quite a few fabric toys so they plus wall coverings and pouches get put in the washer every other friday. Other toys like their wheels, bird toys with wood and plastic and bells, barrel o' monkeys and army men and water bottles get put in the dishwasher every other friday. <3 Amber

the steamer cleans with water.. so far no problems but we've only had gliders for months, not years... though if you htink about it- platic is designed to survive that- PVC pipes last for years with hot and cold water running through and its a gradual cool down even if it does appply the heat fast- just sitting in a cooler temp= the room which does get warm while i'm doing it.. we have 2 cages 5' high*2.5*2.5

I haven't had any problems with mine. I LOVE my steam cleaner!!! Mostly because all it is is water!
