I just got my glider cage, and it's wonderful. But it didn't come with ledges, and I figured they needed somewhere other than the floor to stand, so I got some movable ledges that hook onto the sides. The only problem is, they're not as sturdy as I think they should be. Am I being paranoid? Does anyone have alternate ideas for ledges? I'm bringing home my babies after Christmas, and just want to have everything ready for them!

Gliders are pretty light weight so sturdy isn't really a problem. You might try putting a couple of zip ties to help hold them in place if they move alot.

I use the plastic hardware cloth (found in the garden area of Home Depot) to make shelfs out of for my cages. It is light weight, cleans easy and is inexpensive. You can get a 3 foot by 15 foot roll for $10-$12. That make alot of shelfs and other toys. Just use lanyard hooks (found in the craft section of Walmart) to hook them in with. You can decorate them with fleece strips (tie them to the edges in each hole) to coordinate it with your cage.

I just bought a corner ledge last night at petsmart for 10 bucks. Its large enough to put a food bowl on and for the little guys to stand on. I dont have my gliders yet so I dont know if they like it.... but it's an idea!

I think I got the same ledges as you, and I wasn't happy with them (too bad considering I spent 40.00 on 4 ledges!). I ended up making my own out of the plastic hardware cloth, and they love it. It's actually flexible, but they climb on it a lot, so they don't mind.

I got these little shelves to put spices on in your cupboards and use those zip ties to connect them to the sides of the cage.

Can you guys post pictures of the ledges you're making out of the hardware cloth? For some reason, I'm having a hard time envisioning that, but it sounds like a great idea, especially with fleece hanging off the sides.

this is probably a dumb question... BUT, how big should I make the ledges if I were to make them? and how many ledges should be in one cage for two gliders? Anyone have ideas.... ?

THe breeder I bought the cage from said its bad to have ledges because they can fall off and hurt themselves very badly. but everyone on GC seems to have ledges.... i dont see why I shouldnt have some. I do have ONE in the corner but its fairly close to the bottom. I would like some more at the top area so they can have fun and play with all the toys up there. SOMEONE help!

THANKS!!!!

caitlin, I think its up to the size of your cage on how many and how big the ledges should be. I wouldnt take up TOO much jumping space in there by putting too many ledges.

I think the breeder you got yours from, maybe has never used ledges. Lets not forget that gliders jump from tree to tree in the wild, and even from toy to toy in households. They are MEANT to glide, and jump. If they fall I highly doubt they'd hurt themselves, unless they were falling from the sears tower. My gliders really enjoy being up high, thats why I have put a ledge to keep their food on, and their water bottle is up high, and so are their wheels and pouches. So dont deprive them of their natural instincts of wanting to jump and glide, and be up high.

I have had shelf/ledges in my cages for over 8 years and have never had a glider fall from one. Seems to me, not having a flat surface (or semi-flat) surface in their cage is harder on them (where they only have the verticle sides to hang on to). My gliders will get on their shelfs and JUMP to the toys, swing a bit then jump back to the shelf. I have on average two corner shelves and two corner hammocks (fleece) in each of my 5 foot tall cages.
