Hi everyone. I took my crew to the vet. My snackers was throwing up. I thought when Percy did it it was he drank to fast. So when Snackers also did it a week later I took them to the vet. Snackers has flagellates and he gave us medicine to give all four. It is called Metronidazol for 7 days. I am not sure what flagellates come from. He said it could be the food. If someone could help inform me better I would be very greatful. Thanks

Flagellates, as I understand it, are a type of organism that feed off of other creatures (parasites). If I'm not mistaken (and this isn't my expertise, so correct me if I'm wrong), giardia and trichomonas are both types of flagellates. The antibiotic you were given is the right antibiotic for these parasites, and you will have to religiously follow through with making sure they get the antibiotic every day for the seven days, and then have followup checks at the vet to make sure it's gone.

Thanks for getting back to me so fast. Snackers is the only one that has it, but we are treating all four. They are housed together. I gave them there first does tonight. Percy loved it. Sucked it from the seringe, Mig was not happy one bit. Sugar started shacking a couple times and stopped about 2 min. later. Snackers was quite upset that she had to take it. She shook for maybe 1 min. I am not going away for the weekend. My poor husband, I would not let him give meds. So I will be here for them. Ok I will wash everything. My question is my cage is 4'x2'x5'. Is there any way to wash with cold water and still kill the bug? I was reading about all the stuff going on and hoping it would not come my way. I love these babies. I will go nuts with this. Thanks again.

Update on Snackers and crew. She seems fine other than speading her hind legs out to walk. I am trying to get them to eat the bml again. I thought with a brake maybe they would want it again. My dr. gave me some calcium glucimate to give them. Liquid form, .1cc per glider a day. I was wondering is that too much? I emailed to find out but no answer. I thought maybe she is busy with school starting. I also read in lucys post about the meds. being given once aday and she was wandering about that if it should be twice a day? I didnt see if she found out. My babies are on 250mg/15ml. once a day. .15cc for the boys and .1cc for the girls. Does that sound about right? Thanks Kellie

when using bleach for cleaning cages, toys, etc., a safe but effective ratio for killing flagellates is: 1 ounce of bleach to 1 quart of water

Kellie, I found out that dosage is based on weight. Some vets prefer twice a day dosing, others once a day. The dosing for my gliders was correct, and the treatment seems to have been effective. Keeping my fingers crossed for you!

Hi all. Thought I would give a up date. Well, it has been a week of giving meds and babies not too happy with mom. Mig gave me 5 bites this morning. And one last one as I put him in the cage. Of course I know he didnt mean them because if he did he would have drew blood. I am going to try to get a sample today to take to the vet. Snackers is walking much better. Not so much like a frog anymore. I will let you know about the fecal as soon as I know. Thanks again for all your help and thanks Judie for anwering my emails. I got my spring cleaning done and now I am looking for a vinal couch. How long do you think they need to stay of the cat trees? The have been bleached also. Talk to yall soon. [ 08-28-2002, 02:44 AM: Message edited by: Kellie ]

No the cats dont use them. But they do go in the room when the gliders are not in there. I have noticed my one cat threw up last night but I asummed it was a hair ball. She is not showing simptoms but then I do not know what they are for a cat. I will ask the vet. Thanks
