okay my question is why do the moms eat their babies? my son went to check on them and he found the mom eating the baby.the baby was way too young to come out of the pouch. so could there be something wrong with it? will she continue to do this? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

she is a rescue. i was told that she had three sets of healthy twins already.the condition i found her in was not the best, but i started her on a good diet, clean housing.i let her warm up to me and my family.i thought we were doing good.i also took in her mate,he took up with my husband right away.she took some time but she is coming around.i just can not believe she ate her baby!

Was she pregnant when you guys took them in??If so, sometimes a change of enviroment will cause them to do this. They feel threatned. Beatrice did this with the joey she was pregnant with when my sister took her in.But she had been taken away from her mate also....
I am so sorry you have had to experience this! Hopefully her next one will be okay!

You may want to consider getting him neutered, do you happen to know anything about them? I know you said they were rescues, they aren't siblings are they? There are lots of reasons she may have done this. From the little I know about breeding it sounds like as a rule it isn't a great idea to let recues breed. I'm really sorry you ar ehaving to go throught this!!! Hang in there, you did a great thing taking them in!

Are you sure that was the only joey? They are really notorious for hiding a second joey.
Several reasons why a mom will eat her young:
Something could have been wrong with the joey and only the mom would know.
Her diet not having enough protein for her to produce enough milk for her joey.
Stress can really cause a lot of problems for her.

Probably more reasons I can't think of right now, just love her and try not to be angry with her. Gliders can sense any stress or other emotions from their humans and she needs you to love her right now. Some gliders, especially gliders that are rescues, stress over the smallest things and do not adapt as well as we may think they do, then others will do just fine.

Hopefully, if you allow her to have more joeys, she will do better since she has already had healthy babies successfully.

There are many reasons this could have happened. Since you said she has had joeys before, I assume she is well over a year old so her age shouldn't have been a factor.

Possible stress. Possibly not enough milk production. Possibly something wrong with the joey that only she knew about. Possibly illness on her part such as a pouch infection. Possible previous medical issues from before you got her that you are unaware of. Having been in "bad" shape as well as her mate having been in "bad" shape, there could always be genetic issues involved where she felt the joey was somehow damaged. Possibly she has more then one joey and only enough milk for one.

None of these things are your fault though. Nature happens and sometimes it isn't pleasant. I am so sorry you and your son has had to witness this.

If they were mine, I would take the female in for a wellness check to rule out any medical problems. I would also neuter the male. Because of their previous "bad" conditions, I wouldn't allow them to breed. This is however your choice and I wish you the best with which ever way you choose to go with them.
