Im 16 now and had have my sugar glider lewis for three years . When i was 13 i bought him from this guy that seemed like he didnt now a sugar glider from a bird sence all he was feeding him was bird food. So i bought him and took him for his first vet visit and he was ok. now my lewis is a daddy of two healthy little joeys that will be 8 week oop december 23rd. well on friday i seen that lewis had a swallen eye like a big walnut stuck in his face. i set up an apointment with my vet and the closet i could get him in was on a monday. ive been so paranoid for them three days. when i took him in the vet who told me he has a abcess in his eye and if he doesnt go through sugry right away it can be fatel. so i took him to sugry and they cut a slit under his eye to get all the puss out of it. its now wedsday and ive been holding him down giving him medication every 6 hours. i feel so bad for him and i love him so much. The vet told me that an abcess is hard to get ride of and he may swell up agien. to everyone that has a glider if you see any lumps that can be anywhere on them get them to the vet as soon as possible. abcesses are balls of puss that is caused by a scrath or a bite from his own nail or another glider. my poor babys eyes is swallen shut and he was shaved on his eye. but the good news is hes eating well. pray for him!

I too must congratulate you on your repsonsibility for these gliders. I'm 27, just got my 2 gliders within the last few months, and I've seen people my age and even older who don't take proper care for their gliders. You seem to be doing a great job.

As far as his health, I send my warmest wishes your way for his good health. The medication (I'm assuming antibiotics) should keep him from having any problems during his post-surgery recuperation period. I'm sure he'll do fine. Best of luck just in case.

Take care,
AC, Nicole, Little Man, n Precious

Anything that goes through the skin, sweat glands, hair follicles, sebaceous glands, etc. can all be at the root of an abscess or a cyst. Sometimes, even after the abscess has healed, the affected area can get another abscess, and another, and another, and so on. Sometimes, the only cure for recurring abscesses is the removal of the gland. So keep an eye on him from now on. He may never be safe from another abscess. They may have to remove the little patch of skin where the abscess is to keep them from coming back. Good luck and good job. Bravo.

I wonder if the pus was cultured when the abscess was drained? You would be well served to make sure of 3 things, which your veterinarian has probably already taken into consideration:

1) That the antibiotic chosen is one which kills the germ recovered. The sensitivities (the "S" of a C&S) will tell if and at what tissue level of antibiotic strength the germs will get pickled.

2) That the antibiotic chosen has the most narrow spectrum of coverage to get what is growing there, thereby disrupting other body flora the least amount possible and not contributing to future antibiotic resistance development any more than is necessary. Often broad spectrum meds are used first, but once the germ is identified, a better choice is usually available.

3) That the antibiotic chosen can get penetration into the area and tissues in question. Since infection around the eye is infection around the central nervous system, I would not be opposed to using something that can cross the blood-brain barrier.

These facial abscesses seem to be tricky to keep clear, as they tend to recur after they look to have been fixed. In human children we sometimes treat with a different med (rifampin) after finishing the antibiotic treatment to clear out the nose colonization of the bad germ. Email if questions. Good luck.
