First I would like to thank those of you who I have called upon and you were right there to help and give suggestions.

A little over a month ago Sugar (Spencers mate) quit eating and was placed on Clavamox for 3 weeks. her bottom incisors were loose and she had irritated gums.

This past weekend she quits eating again and was placed back on the Clavamox Sun. I dropped her off at the vet this morning they are going to do a dental, cleaning, and whatever else is necessary. I did give him all the suggestions I received from you fine folks (and you know who you are)!! So Keep my big girl in your thoughts today. I will know more at 3:30 when I pick her up.

sorry Val I did not see to text you hun. Sugar is OK. They cleaned her teeth............she had some particles of some sort with plaque build up around her incisors. Her gums near the incisors are inflamed. After the cleaning Dr. Reese Inj. the Doxirobe(which is supposed to be the awesomest stuff to give)(thank You xfilefan) around those two teeth. He sent a blood sample off to the lab.........we should know the results of that next week. He sent me home with SMZ TMP suspension and benebac.

She ate a mealworm this morning..........YAY..........WOOT!!!!!!!! This may seem insignificant to some of you but this is huge.............she hasnt eaten a mealie in a week!!!!! I could just go hug Dr. Reese who listens to me and is not too full of himself to call Dr. Tristan. A hug to Dr. Tristan for phone consulting and a hug for Tara cause she went to work for Dr. Reese (she used to work for Dr. Tristan)
My hugs dont stop there:
Chris(gliderz5) Thank You!
Xfilefan(Jen) Thank You!
Jackiechansmom(Val) Thank You!!

Each of the above people either talked with me on the phone about what worked for them or what their vets did for their gliders with dental issues.

It was so worth the 300 plus dollars I paid yesterday so Sugar can eat today. smile

Yea well she quit eating solids again and is back on SMZ TMP as of yesterday. I just bathed them both today. When she is having teeth issues she wallows around in the food dish........................Is she trying to eat by osmosis..........lOl Anyway she makes a mess and is not grooming herself or Spencer when she has teeth issues.......................................Boy did they stink this morning! After the bath I brushed them with a toothbrush...............at least I can stand to be near them!!!

cora, did he say what the particles were or could have been that was around the base of her teeth? I know you said there was plaque, but was the particles separate? I guess what I am asking .. is was it non food particles or food particles? and could that have been what caused the infection in her gums?

Last night Sugar would not eat, drank some ensure and noted to have facial swelling. Dropped her off at the vet this morning. Under anesthesia Dr. Reese cleaned her teeth again, said there was gingivitis and a few pus pockets present. The pus was drained and sent to the lab for culture. He injected gelpack of doxyrobe between her bottom teeth, gave her an injection of baytril and sent me home with Baytril. The culture wont be in until monday or tuesday to tell us if the baytril is the right medication. If this does not work he is going to pull those 2 bottom teeth.

Sugar is doing pretty good, she is eating and her and Spencer are ALOT cleaner (she does all the grooming)! Hopefully her culture will be in today to make sure she is on the right antibiotic.
OT: wonder if her sister, Hollys necropsy report comes back as well.

OMG Cora, that is something I would have never expected. Do they think the trimeth sulfa will help clear it up completely? I hope she starts feeling better soon. You are both in my prayers and thoughts. hug2

I will get a copy of Sugars Culture and sensitivity tomorrow and scan and post it ......................................should of got a copy when I picked up her antibiotics but did not think about that at the time. That way you can see what a C&S looks like and will know in fact the ABT her particular super bug is susceptible to.
Just remember rescuers /(everyone really) now that we know our ill compromised gliders can get this esp. after 2 or 3 rounds of Baytril for the same exact infection................................................it suddenly becomes resistent......................................didnt happen until Baytril came along or so it seems. So treat every glider you have coming in like they have something. I know most of you all do that anyway. but even your pets you have had from day one can get it , like Sugar so treat them the same way. Just be careful. Sanitize, sanitize. Buy cleaners that say they kill mrsa,Hepatitis, VRE, HIV, etc. Then rinse well.

Cora, I worry about so much Baytril too. I have cleaning his mouth out with spring water (gums actually) and using the dental tool I have with the soft tip to clean inbetween. Unless his gums look too inflamed, I have not been giving the Baytril. He has been on and off of it for almost 2 years now! frown

Just MO but I think that alot of our gliders are getting dental issues due to the food we feed them. In the wild they eat moths, lizards, baby birds, eggs, crickets and other insects and alot of people due not feed their gliders any insects at all and the ecoskeletons help to keep their teeth clean. They need stuff like this in order to be healthy. I have been researching and I have been feeding my gliders now more insects and less liquid food. I only give yogurt once a week and I try to feed mostly fresh fruits and veggies since they are more solid than the frozen thawed out ones. I make sure I put their vitamins on their fruits and veggies though.
I know not everyone will agree with me but this is what works for me and what I think is best for my gliders and so far everyone is healthy even my fluffy two.

Mine are all on PML, I used to feed super and mealworms. They have things to chew also. Some gliders, like people are just susceptable to gum disease.
