Here's my cage.....made of pine wood and tough plastic mesh wire. It is 5'high, 3' by 2' wide. I put tile on the floor, and cover that with paper. It is easy to clean the floor this way!

My first cage was before I had any idea what I was doing… having to seal the wood ( urine soaking), the fact that galvanized wire / screen was not good (UTI possible)…. I know may do build their own cages… I just did not have the information needed at the time… I am sure you will get lots of help… and read through the other posts about this… there is lots of info here….
If you want to have a good pvc-coated cage that lasts for a long time, I highly recommend that you go to Klubertanz, www.klubertanz.com and ask for Richard. He is very knowledgable about our gliders' needs. What I do is build the cage from the pull-out tray and on up. Start at the bottom and work your way up. I have built one 3'x2'x6' cage, numerous 24"x18"x36" cages and a few travel cages. The pvc wire is very sturdy and it does not require a frame to hold shape.
Galvanized cage is a NO-NO! Galvanized wire has been proven to be a cause of UTI (urinary tract infection) which is very costly to get rid of, and UTI has been known to start SM (self-mutilation). It is advised to avoid using galvanized wire at all costs.
MiniZoo, I hope the pine wood of your gliders' cage is sealed with polyurethane several times over, otherwise the gliders' urine would be soaked into bare wood in no time and it would stink up real bad.
I hope this helps.
Jen

I do not believe in coating my animal's wooden cages. I have had this cage for about 8 months now, and there is no problem with the urine. I will make them a new cage before I will coat their cage with chemicals. If an animal ir bird will chew on the wood, then it must be chemical free for me:o)

I do understand the worry of chemical coating… but my home would not put up with another wood cage… at first we could not figure out why they smelled so bad…. In fact this weekend I decided to remove a few wooden perches from their new cage, just because of the absorption factor ,,,,
Luckily, my glider's cage is in my arts and crafts room. I also do not have the boys neutered, so we have the scent smell too. It does not bother me at all.....I actually like their smell (gross, I know! I also love the smell of horse barns.....too much information, lol!) Of course, if the cage were in the living room or a bedroom, I would make it out of PVC pipes. But for me and my glider babies, everything is working out fine with the natural wooden cage, and their wood climbing branches:o)

I have a cage that's 2'wide x 2'deep x 6'high that I, too, made from vinyl-coated shelving purchased at Lowe's. It cost me about $80 for everything, and I used 2 18" square vinyl-coated kitchen shelves for the "doors". It's held up for 2 years now & is a breeze to wash...the only down side to it is having to take it apart to fit into the bathtub!(lol)
