Originally posted by Suz. In an ongoing effort to further our knowledge of sugar gliders in captivity, we are seeking information about Joey Development. This study was prompted by a recent thread, Joey Weight Chart??? In order to accumulate as much data as possible, the study will encompass the development of joeys in three different situations. 1) Joeys that remain with their parents until they are fully weaned. 2) Joeys that are supplement fed at some point before they are weaned. 3) Joeys that have been removed from the parents for some reason and have been hand-raised. In addition, data about the parents' ages, diet and size will be compiled.
If you have one or more breeding pairs of gliders, you are invited to participate in this study. Please keep in mind that in order to be comprehensive, you will need to weigh your joeys each and every day from the time they come out of pouch (detached from the mother's teat) until they are fully weaned and separated from their parents. You will also need to be able to provide information about the parents of the joey(s). You do not need to be a USDA Licensed breeder to participate. Please note that you will need to have a scale that weighs in grams.
If you are interested in participating in this study, you will first need to print the Joey Vital Statistics Chart and Questionnaire. Upon completion of the chart and questionnaire, please go to theJoey Development Study to submit your data. Results of this study will be compiled on an ongoing basis and will be published regularly. This data can be viewed by going to Joey Development.
Thank you very much to those who are willing to participate in this important study for the betterment of our gliders in captivity.
There's a great scale available through HERE - it's actually a jewelry scale so it weighs in 1/100th of grams (0.01) for more accuracy. Although it's tiny, you can put a disposable Glad or Ziploc storage container on the tray before you "tare" it so you can confine your joey to the scale. It really works great Please click the image to the left to Participate.

So, I have a joey that I have been raising and I don't know what she weighs now or every day leading up to now, but I do know what she weighed when she was rejected! Can I help or no? I'd be happy to pick up now and take off with it!
Let me know
Thanks

Mackenzie, Fill in the information you DO have and start tracking her weights from this point on... I can definitely use the information because the way I compile the data is by line item, not by grouping...

I just came across the Joey Vital Static Development chart and am interested in participating. I have a few questions. How do you keep tabs on each joey? I currently have two and they are almost identical. Is there a way to "tag" them?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

You really can't tag a joey, but you CAN slightly trim the fur at the end of one of the joey's tails so that it is blunt. That will help in identification and will not hurt the joey in any way. Your participation in the study would be greatly appreciated!

I paint one of their back toes with nail polish to help tell the difference between joeys. Then I chart them as "pink toes". You'll have to do it about once/week to keep the color visable. Make sure you let it dry out completely before putting them back.

I have two females with Joey's IP. I have printed the documents and will participate in the "Joey Development Study".

New study results have been posted on my site HERE.
So far, the data for 17 joeys has been submitted to the study. If you are breeding sugar gliders, please consider participating in this important Joey Development Study. More submitted data will result in more accurate study results.

I wish I could participate in this as I have two joeys, but I don't know their oop date, and were malnurished when i recieved them, infact my smaller joey has gone from 30 g to 52 in 8 days, so they certainly won't help to publish the norms for joeys. Good luck though
