The matting can be caused by many things like not grooming due to illness. Smaller animals can have different parasites that cause them to be ill which can cause them not groom themselves. It can also be depression that is causing your glider to not groom. Is your glider a lone glider? I would recommend getting your glider in to your vet for a wellness check.

Yes, once you rule out the glider has not gotten into it's food or water the next option is to see a vet. As Eddie said there are any number of parasites or illnesses that can cause a glider's fur to be scruffy. Charlie H

i dont think so. He seems fine. When we do tent time he plays. But he's been with me for about 2 months now, He's 4 months old. I'm trying to get him a lady friend but I hear they have to be older to prevent babies to early. I could just be overreacting but I dont want to take any chances.

sounds like you are being a little over protective. But that is not a bad thing. It is possible but not very likely that a four month old joey will self mutilate. He could be over grooming and causing the area to mat due to saliva. I don't blame you for worrying over him though. Keep a close eye on him and if he shows any other signs of illness please post asap. Charlie H
