Hello, my name is Bernie! I have an adorable, active, curious, precautious, smart, and sweet little suga baby named Cindel (named after the little blonde girl from Ewoks Battle for Endor). Anyways, I was wondering because my New Year was recently sabotaged by the flu. I prepared her food with bare hands... can she catch my virus? I hope animals can't get human viruses. It was pretty nasty. I washed my hands first but I am concerned. Also, if I was too sick to get up and play with her for one day, is she traumatized from being alone all night? Sometimes that happends but not often. Thanks for listening.

I took biology last year and my teacher said animals can't catch human viruses so I don't think so, and as for leaving your glider alone for one night, again I don't think it will do a lot of damage if any at all.

Sorry SugarAbsession..your teacher doesn't know gliders. Yes, they CAN catch a cold and virus from us. Hubby spent 5 nights on the couch in the living room due to a cold recently and wasn't allowed near our bedroom or anything of theirs or the food. As for playing with her..is there someone else in the house who can play with her? If not, don't panic...talk to her through the door. I purchased one of those face masks in case I caught hubbies cold (and I did )to wear so I could make their dinner ..I still had limited contact with them though. She will be fine as long as she has food, water and toys. Maybe turn on a radio or tv real low for her for a couple hours too Hope you get to feeling better real soon!!

From what I understand, most animals can't catch illnesses from us. Sugar Gliders (other animals also) however, can.

While I have never had any of my gliders get ill from anyone in my home being sick (myself included) you should use standard sanitary precausions. Wash your hands with antibacterial soap before making their dinner (always, not just when you are sick) and make sure not to sneeze or cough on them. As much as they might miss not having play time for a night or two, it is better then the risk of them getting sick.
I know my ferrets and my humans have passed colds back and forth. I'm just very cautious with my gliders because they are so small and cold and flu bugs can be nasty for those of us human size.

This is very disturbing to me. I was told the same that they could not catch from me and I had been coughing and hacking all the time he was hanging in his zipper pouch around my neck. I am done with it now but man I wish sellers would get informed before they go tell people thing. The thought now how close I came to lossing my baby BamBam. The thought is just horrible. Thanks to all of you now he is safer.

WOW! THank you for responding to me. I feared I would log on here today and find my post ignored. THank you guys.. and Happy New Year.. With all that has been said, let me take this question to the next level; it's the flu that I have and it is nasty. Do you think she can die from it?

[:"green"]Bernie, If she actually contracts the flu from you, then: yes, it could kill her. It is not very likely that she will contract it though since you are already using precautions with washing your hands and not playing with her while sick.
I hope you feel much better soon. If you need a "glider sitter" while sick, call me... you have my number.

Thank you Sue, for being a light in the tunnel. I am scared now because what if she is going to die from my germs? I might have not been careful enough. Oh my poor little Sugee Baby! WHat will I do? I hope she is alright. I had better leave her alone right now before it's too late. I am sitting in the same room with her but I should leave. Thank you for your response. I also emailed your website.
