I was going to post a Memorial/Tribute (but since I've already done that on the "petloss" website), I figured as a "real story" would help glider lovers more than seeing a "tribute". I am a fairly new glider owner (less than a year) and have done prior and up to now alot of research on how to care for these precious animals, etc... but beyond this I am an "animal" lover and besides my 2 gliders have 3 dogs and all of my animals receive equal love, attention and are generally treated like kings and queens. All of my pets are vet checked every 6 months, groomed and fed proper diets and played with and loved. Just to let you know I am not a child I'm 40 years old and my sisters are 26 and 27 and our mom also lives with us and our niece 13 and nephew 5 visit on the weekends. OK here is my story: I got Nini (male s.g.) last October (8 wks OOP) he was our baby and took to myself and my family wonderfully. After we got him I wanted a friend for him so we then got Luna (female) at which time I took Nini to get neutered as I am not nor intend on becoming a breeder. The neutering was stressful for Nini and I took him to work for a couple of days... once he was fine he was his old self again and both he and Luna loved eachother and our family. As we all know they're nocturnal... ours did not wake up until about 10 pm each night... but... nevertheless we (my sisters and I) took turns playing with them on various nights for at least an hour or so. We were always very careful and NEVER left them alone in their room (the den) and it's glider proof. I often hear of people leaving them alone <<< I don't see how you can... but anyhow...... Our gliders are very smart <<< they try to open the jar with the treats, they're very inquisitive, etc....Before bed we always make sure the cage doors are secure.... all the doors in the house are closed (especially the bathroom)..... Well..... on Monday, May 26 this year at about 7:45 am my sister was screaming.... we were all here (my niece and nephew) included.....our precious Nini was floating in the TOILET!! We ran in the den to check on Luna and the bottom door on the cage was opened and she was also gone!! After some craziness we found her in my niece's barbie house <<< thank God<<< they always loved to play in the barbie house..... but... our sweet Nini was gone <<< wet and cold with his eyes opened and his little feet curled up under his chin<<< I was and am still sick over it thinking was was he thinking while drowning? Was he barking for me, was he thinking where's my mom? Mommy I need you. I can't even type now because I cry so much for him. We had him cremated and I have him with me in a beautiful urn with his picture on it. Needless to say Luna was heartbroken also. I waited 2 weeks and got her another playmate, a male, Rocket and thank God they took to eachother beautifully and they now love eachtother. I first felt guilty to get a new one right away but I felt Luna's pain and didn't want her to get sick. Needless to say now, we're more conscious than before about the bathroom but I just wanted to share this with all of you because no matter how careful you are accidents happen even in the most careful and glider proof households. Please always check that your cage doors are secure and that not only is the bathroom door shut but you ALWAYS put the lid down after use. We had to learn the hard way, including my niece and nephew because we did not think that although we're so careful..... a child is not going to think at that hour of the night.... to put the lid down and close the door..... please try to stress this to those families with children that are there all the time.... ours are just here on the weekend..... Thank you for listening and I hope this can help some of you. And.... to my precious "first born glider" Nini ..... I love you and we'll meet on the Rainbow Bridge......your mom..... Laura

OMG Laura I"M SOOOOOOOO sorry. I feel your pain. I lost my glider LUNA to stress when we moved to our new house. Recently I have decided to use pad locks instead of spring loaded lock because I'm so concerned they could get to where the dogs are. Your heart will heal with time, as mine did but never EVER forget the glorious memories that "our" babies have given us.

Oh! I'm so sorry! I read your story and just started crying...Thank you for your story. My boyfriend and I always remember to put the toilet seat lid down...but that is one of my fears. Losing an animal is sad...but you will see him again someday! He's probably Luna's Guardian Sugar Glider now and will always watch after her and you.

Aww Im so sorry. I only have one glider and she is my only glider that I have and I am always worried about her getting into trouble. She is a smart glider and has escaped from her cage many times. We didnt even know she was missing and we found her in my moms bed when my mom screamed. (my mom is scared of all animals)
But now we lock her cage.

Im so sorry about your glider and hope you have wonderful memories that will fill your heart with joy every time you think of her. Dont think of her death but instead think of how much joy you guys had with each other.
Good Luck with your new glider.

aww.. I am so so sorry about your loss. This reminds me of a while ago.. my baby got out of her cage, and she was found in the toilet, but she made it! Miraculously.. however, she has just died from an unrelated problem. This just goes to show you.. expect the unexpected. We thought Tiki would have been dead after her encounter with the toilet. I feel your pain and your greiving. I miss Tiki too..
