Poor Nicky, his nose had been swelled up since Christmas. He had gone into the vets & was on antibiotics & was having antibiotic ointment put on his nose. I tried to get him back into the vets last Friday but with the holiday they weren't able to get him in. This morning I got home to find out that he had gotten tired of having his nose swelled & did something about it himself. He apparently scratched open the swelling to release the pressure. His nose is still slightly swelled, but now he has an open sore where the center of it had been. I gave him his antibiotics this morning & put the ointment on the sore, and am going to get him into the vets office asap as soon as they open. I'll update after I get back.

Oh poor little Nicky, that must hurt. Please give him a kiss and hug for me and good luck at the vets.

I just got back from the vets office. He said that Nicky's nose was looking fine, he didn't do too much damage when he opened it up. The Dr cleaned it up and told me to continue the antibiotic ointment 3x a day and to continue giving him the baytril 2x a day. We have another appointment Friday- prior appointment for Nickers to get his once a month dental and now to have his nose rechecked. Nick was not happy to have to go see the Dr & afterwards escaped from his crate & hid under my shirt & stuck there like he had superglue on his feet. He refused to come out or let go until we got home & he saw his cage. Before you say anything, I know I shouldn't drive with him on me, & I normally don't, but he really, really wanted his Mommy & after all he's been through I didn't have the heart to say no to him this time. Tho if Nick does decide that he wants to be a bra-baby on a more perminent basis (his idea, I never worked with him on this) we are definately going to have to do something about his nails.

I would have left him next to me too Chris , poor little guy. So good to hear he didn't do any damage, and I hope this healing progress moves a little faster for him!

Poor little guy. I bet releasing the pressure actually made it feel better for him. I know when I've had small abcesses like that, the pressure is what caused the pain and that the hole/sore left after it was drained didn't hurt near as bad.

I think he did feel better afterwards. Before he opened it, his poor nose looked so swollen & bruised. I was actually planning on taking him in today & having the Dr open it up & drain it. Nick just didn't want to wait....either that or he knew what I had planned & didn't want to go in........
"See Mom, the swelling is all gone now, so we don't have to go see Dr K. Right?"

[:"green"]Chris, I'm glad to hear he didn't do any major damage to himself by opening his infection. I know that when Cricky had his eye infection, he opened a drain under his eye & it helped to heal much quicker.
I would have let him stay on me, too... As long as he wasn't running around the vehicle while you were trying to drive, there's no issue with him being "out & about"...
Just my opinion !
Thanks for the update,

Well hmmmm....Maybe Nicky is onto something?? I have a very swollen nose as well from sinus infections that wont go away...maybe I will follow his lead seeing as how the meds dont seem to be working on me neither!!

Seriously, glad to hear he is doing good, and I also would have left him stay on me where he felt safe and sound.

Keep us posted and give him glider kisses for me.

My Nickers suffers from peridontal disease. So far we have it contained to his 2 front incisors. So he goes in regularly to have his teeth cleaned & checked to make sure it isn't spreading to his other teeth. Today my vet did check his upper teeth & said that the infection in his nose hadn't effected them so that's a good thing.
Right now Nickers is curled up with his buddy Meeko & he didn't mind when I put his medicine on his nose. Of course he was busy eating a wormie at the time.......

I just wanted to let everyone know that Nickers nose is looking really good today. Absolutely NO swelling. As for where he tore it open, it is healing well. He has lost a little bit of hair around the area and now has a small scab. It doesn't look like he's messing with it in any way.

Is the vet giving medication to correct the peridontal condition? Seems like this is a condition that could be treated and cured.

Nicky gets antibiotics for his peridontal condition. Unfortunately his lower front incisors are no longer together because of it and he gets food caught in there which irritates his gums and starts the whole cycle over again. I did get a peridontal rinse this last time that I'm going to try using to see if that will wash out caught food.

Chris, How did you notice in the first place? I tried looking in my suggie's mouth and there was no way he was gonna let me even see his teeth.

I first noticed when Nicky's daddy Sassy had problems with his teeth when Sassy started sneezing continually. A vet visit revealed that it wasn't a cold, it was gum disease. I could always tell when his was flaring up because he would start to suck on the end of his tail, so off we'd go to the vets where he'd lose another tooth or two then he'd be fine for a few more weeks.
With Nicky, I noticed that he was starting to drop his food and didn't want to bite things with his front teeth. His lower jaw was also more prominant than it should have been. Since Nick has been diagnosed witht he problem and it is reoccuring due to him continually getting things caught between his teeth, I always keep an eye on the distance that they are spread when I give him his meds or rinse his mouth with his peridontal rinse. I'm attatching a picture of Nicky with his mouth open, so you can see how his lower incisors are spread apart. When he has a flare up, his incisors will spread even further apart due to swelling/infection or caught food.
BTW, his nose looks great today, just a little scab!

So glad to hear that Nicky is on the mend now!

It pays to be "in tune" with your gliders and also to be very observant of your gliders! You are doing such a great job with these babies of yours!

Give Nicky and all of the others extra mealies and a kiss from me.

I'm glad to hear his 'hole' is healing! Give him a glider kiss from auntie Jen!

Gim has a similar problem..only his is from his former owner breaking his lower jaw, and both halves of his jaw move independently from each other. He tends to get an infection in the gum right below those bottom front teeth (we're treating a flare up now, too). Only that's the only place he has an issue. Not sure if removing the teeth would help in his case, since they aren't technically the issue.

Tell Nicky to just keep getting better so his mommy doesnt' worry so much!

Well Nick had his vet appointment this morning and he was a little angel! No crabs, no fusses My vet was very pleased about his nose. He said that Nickers healed very fast, had excellent in home care (pat myself on the back) and that he could hardly tell his nose had been injured. He then cleaned up Nicks teeth and said that they were looking GREAT! He thinks the peridontal rinse is helping his teeth & gums!
Tonight when Nickers got up he was very perky & active. He took his meds & mouthwash cooperatively even if not willingly. (He doesn't try to fight me, he just tries to burrow into his blanket to avoid taking his meds) And he is now downstairs running on his wheel.:)

I have got to ask, How in the world do you get Nicky to take and rinse mouthwash?

Cellulitis and abscesses tend to work to the surface and drain. The hole may have occurred spontaneously, or perhaps the thinned and unhealthy tissue gave way with minimal rubbing or scratching. Either way, the pain is usually alleviated by the draining, so Nicky is better off. That hole is healthy and good also, and is less risky than no hole and held-in infection. Best thing that can happen to an abscess is drainage, and spontaneous is better than surgical I & D.

With Gim's mouthwash we put it on qtips and clean the affected area with it. And he doesn't appreciate it, for the most part, but it does help.

With Nicky, the vet is having me hold him kind of sideways/tilted & use a syringe to rinse the front of his mouth by his incisors. You do have to be careful tho, to keep it by his lower lip so that it doesn't get near his nose. With the rinse being on the front of his mouth, when he shakes his head afterwards (an instinctive reaction unless they are being held so they cannot shake), he flings out what hasn't already dribbled away so he doesn't drink it. The vet did mention (on my last visit) that I could also use a q-tip to place it directly on the area in question if I needed too, but the irrigation method, is what he used in the office & what he recommended.

He'd appreciate the hugs & kisses Lynsie. Unfortunately he didn't get as many as he should have when his nose swelled up due to his Mommy having a really nasty cold. Unfortuantely tho, I'm the only one who can give him his meds at my house so I had to handle him more than I normally would have while I was sick. I had to stick with giving him an extra wormie to show my love, since I didn't want to take the chance that he might get my germs if I kissed him . Luckily I'm better now tho so I've been trying to make up for it.
