HPW Question

So I'm thinking of switching my guys to the HPW diet...I like that I can offer an array of fruits and veggies compared to the BML diet, I just printed the ratios of fruits and veggies out and going to pick and choose the fruits and veggies to buy now. My question is I looked over the recipe for HPW and saw that it calls for 1.5 cups of honey! WOW! Isn't that A LOT of honey?? I thought using a 1/2 cup in the BML was a lot? Too much of anything in my eyes is a bad thing - and with all that honey - Oh My!

That's what I thought at first, but when you think about it, the gliders are only getting 1 teaspoon of HPW vs. 1 tablespoon of BML. When you calculate it out, the gliders get the same amount of honey, if not less, with HPW as they do with BML.

The honey is in the HPW but that's the whole batch which will last quite a while depending on how many gliders you have. So they are not going to get as much honey as it sounds since you only feed 1 teaspoon of the HPW each night. I do feed it mayself and love it cuz it's easy to make, store & serve and my crew loves it! They have beautiful fur coats and less of an odor. I also like that I can give them a huge variety of fruits & veggies. I get my wombaroo powder & bee pollen from thepamperedglider, sugeebaby on here.

Ok - so my next question would be the fruits & veggies. I've read through a million of posts on here, and even printed out the ratios page (and got even more confused) lol I like that I can feed such an array of fruits and veggies, and even switch it up with new fruits and veggies every other night or so. Now I'm just wondering what fruits and veggies are okay to feed? The whole 2:1 ratio I completely understand, but when I look at the ratio list and see that collard greens for instance is 14.6:1 My thought is I would never feed them that! It just seems way to high! I know I over analyze to much - I get told that about everything lol. Maybe some people that feed the HPW diet can give me an example of their fruits and veggies that they feed nightly? That would help me out a bunch!

It's all about balance. Collard greens are very high in calcium, but corn is high in phosphorus... You need to try and find some middle ground. If you feed a few things high in calcium, offer something else that has a little more phosphorus or visa versa...

PM me your email and I will send you some ratio info from Lucky_Glider that really helps to get started with the HPW diet.

Ok for instance...tonight when I feed my gliders...they will get peas, sweet potatoes and cucumbers for veggies and papaya (good ratios), apples, watermelon and some dates. I usually feed mine different fruits and veggies every night, for variety. I usually always put papaya since it has good ratios and my gliders LOVE it!

I feed HPW with the same veggies as the BML diet. It's just so easy to buy the bags of 4 frozen veggies, and since my gliders eat all their veggies, if it ain't broke, don't fix it! Speaking of which... are your gliders eating well on their current BML diet? If so, it may not be a good idea to switch to a different diet.
I also feed a fruit smoothie and don't have any leftovers in the morning.
I too was concerned about the large amount of honey and 4 out of 7 of my gliders were becoming noticeably fluffier. I started substituting 1/2 cup of natural applesauce for 1/2 cup of the honey, and they still clean their plates every night. It is recommended that you follow each diet exactly as written. This modification was a personal choice I made for my gliders and I have gotten good results.
I'm sure you will get more opinions. Just read, ask questions and decide what is best for YOUR gliders and your lifestyle!

I feed HPW every night and rotate the fruits & veggies. One night fruits, the next night veggies. I also give them regular fruit yogurt a couple times a week and sometimes feed them some baby food apples & chicken or just plain applesauce. They get mealies & dried fruits for treats and are all happy & healthy!

Recently we made up a fruit smoothie & veggie relish (but omitted the honey from the recipes because the HPW has so much in it already). Fruit: -red apple -bag mix of frozen blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries -cantaloupe -orange Veggies: -sweet potato -cucumber -bok choy -peas I hope I'm not missing anything. I'm planning to post a video & the amounts we used of everything on my website soon. Papaya would be another good thing to add to this mixture too, but since we didn't have any, we increased the bok choy to keep the ca:ph ratio higher. We also kept the tiny fruits & veggies intact & just chopped the rest up (instead of blending it all into mush). We think our gliders like to hold the little pieces in their hands. As far as collard greens go, I'm no expert, but they're very high in oxalates, which means the gliders aren't absorbing all of the calcium. Here's a page with links to safe fruits & veggies lists that are color-coded to show items high in oxalates: http://www.sweet-sugar-gliders.com/safe-fruits-and-vegetables.htmlMisty

I started doing the same thing..substituting a 1/2 cup honey with applesauce...only because I noticed one of my gliders was not into the hpw as much as the other. Now the plate is cleaned up every morning and her coat is starting to improve.

I feed HPW, and use the same veggie/fruit mix every time I make to freeze. My girls love it, they aren't bored with it, and it allows me to mix things a tad in the case I get bored with it. I use a large mashed sweet potato and large mango or papaya, with shredded spinach, a good amount chopped green beans, chopped carrots, and unsweetened, organic apple sauce to sweeten and combine the mix. I pack the mixture into ice trays with a few peas or corn or blueberries or blackberries at the bottom and pop them into freezer bags later. The larger size of the ice tray I have allows me to use one tablespoon of HPW and one cube of veggies/fruits.

Hey Joshua... I may have to try that. Are the ratios calculated right? Would be great if everyone shared what they use if they use it every time. But one thing though... are you saying you are only giving your gliders 1/2 a table spoon of veggies and 1/2 a table spoon of fruit? Because they need one of each

Oh, no, they of course get one tablespoon of HPW and one full serving of their veggies/fruit. I was simply saying that the frozen cube is quite larger than most ice trays, and thus satisfies the set diet's portion requirements of 2 tablespoons of veggie and fruits. I apologize for the confusion. Other frozen mixtures I have glanced at required one or one and a half cubes to accommodate for the full dietary requirement. Yes, the ratios are calculated appropriately. I will compensate with a touch more spinach if I am treating them with corn than if I would blackberries, though mostly out of my paranoia for my girl's health. Even though the c:ph ratios in the ingredients list are safe, I'm still neurotic about being c:ph mindful, though it's mostly an insecurity on my part.
