my little boy (less than 1 yr oop). has been hissing a lot while trying to pee. he does this every other night, but only after he takes his first long pee before play time. there doesnt seem to be much comming out, and he has done this about 6 or 7 times since he has been awake. he seems other wise alert, and not in pain... is this a UTI, dehydration, or something else? can gliders over come a UTI on their own? i have recently cut down on their food portions, because i thought he seemed a little constipated, and cut down on the amount of bml. i have only been doing this for a week. could this be the problem? i have added some sweet guava juice to their water to get them both to drink more. what else can i do?!? HELP ME PLEASE!!!

[:"green"]It sounds like your little guy does probably have a UTI. You need to bring him to your vet as soon as you can to get him checked out. If it is a UTI, the vet will need to prescribe an antibiotic in order for your little guy to recover properly. UTI's do not go away on their own. If it is a UTI, this could lead to self-multilation if left untreated... please get him to a vet soon. In the meantime, make sure he is drinking plenty of water, gliderade, pedialyte or gatorade so that he doesn't get dehydrated. Please keep us posted...

I would say a UTI is a definite probability, given the symptoms you describe. Get him into a vet ASAP-First thing in the morning is advisable, esp if this has been going on for a week. LOTS of fluids. Fluids will also help with constipation, had that been the issue, but I would never cut down the amount of food for something like that. Also, the hissing is an indication that he is in a great deal of discomfort, if not pain, and the longer it continues, the greater the chance of self mutilation becomes. Gliders like most wild animals, have the instinct to hide illness, and show symptoms only when it is bad enough they can no longer hide it. He will need a urinalysis done by the vet-to determine whether it is a gram positive or negative bug, and appropriate antibiotic. Until you can get him in, keep a very close eye on him...gliders in discomfort/pain can start to self mutilate in a desperate attempt to make the pain stop, not realizing they are making it worse. Update with what the vet finds.

Also, you can put juice or nectar in in ADDITION to water, but they should always have a clean, uncontaminated water source by itself, with nothing mixed in.

UTI's can be deadly. I lost a female to a UTI that turned into a kidney infection last year. Unfortunatly, she never showed any symtoms until it was way to late. Take your little boy to the vet ASAP!

this has not been going on for a week. what i thought was constipation has been. if he has been constipated it has been very light. having never seen what real glider constipatio is, i was not sure. i decreased all foods, because they have been eating significantly less with the new moon. i expect their appetites to increase again soon. what i meant by what i said about decreasing food was that i simply had a lower bml to fruit/ veggie ratio (instead of it being even). i now have a slightly different issue. as of this morning bobafett is acting completely fine. i woke him up, and he peed on me with out any noise at all, plus, it was more than he had been trying to get out last night. the urine itself was clear and i did not see any blood. so is this a UTI? he is more active and alert and his appetite has not decreased at all. was that area maybe irritated by something, or was there something else goin on? could it have been stress?

I may have been unclear..I was trying to answer quickly due to the urgency I sensed in your post. Let me see if I can explain my reply..

The symptoms you described as going on for a week may very well have been the early symptoms of a UTI...I have dealt with a number of them and it is easier for me to recognize poss. symptoms. When gliders, like people, have a UTI, because of the bacteria and changes in the PH of the urine (either too acidic or alkaline) it can be uncomfortable for them to go, which can either make them appear to be straining, or hiss in pain as it is uncomfortable for the urine to pass from the bladder. As it gets worse, they tend to go only drops at a time, trying to go, but it is uncomfortable, so they try and hold it at the same time. After they've been asleep for awhile they may have more of a flow...urine that is extremely light or watery in color can go with a UTI, and it may temporarily make it more comfortable as well as it's watered down. Urine should always be a light yellow...too light or too dark can indicate an issue.

Symptoms with a UTI can vary depending on the dilution of the urine, going from seeming awful, to almost not there, then back. When the symptoms are identified, tho, a vet is needed. Hopefully that helps.

Let us know what the vet has to say.

I took Gizmo to the vet when he was hissing when peeing. A vet did the UA, but it came back fine. She said that some gliders will hiss once in a while when they pee, and he'll still do it every so often.

okay, sorry i couldnt get this update out sooner- my computer is unreliable. at any rate, yes, xfilefan that info does help a lot. like you said he seemed fine the next morning when i woke him to chekc on him. that is why i was even debating taking him in. i did shortly there after take him in, and the vet came back with the results very quickly- he did have a UTI. the vet thinks his pH changed, which caused a blockage, and that is why he seemed completely fine the next morning. so, this should be a warning to all... JUST BECAUSE YOUR GLIDER SEEMS FINE THE NEXT MORNING, DO NOT THINK IT WAS CAUSED BY SOMETHING ELSE!! ALWAYS ASSUME IT IS A UTI!!!

thanks for all the help and support guys, i really needed it and appreciate the quick response.

<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yelclap.gif" alt="" /> Good for you for taking him in to get taken care of and good for Xfilefan for the solid advise! I'm glad he's feeling better. Having had UTI's myself in the past, I know they can be VERY painful!
