My gliders are both having the runs. Allmost liquid and I did try to bring the to the vet well vets in my area and none of them knew anything about them. So I put apple sause, Pedlight, Apple Juice Took all the food that was in there and trew it away and put new bml in there even the dry food from the pet store I trew out and put new stuff in there. Cleaned out with soap and water there water dishes, gave them both meal worms even rinsed the meal worms off to make sure they were clean. Gave them some yougart stuff that you have to put in the bml (that 4oz size bottel I think it has apple stuff and something else). What else should I do? I'm going to when I get off of work clean there whole cage out. I just doint get it they were fine for a few days after I cleaned there cage. There cage hasn't been cleaned in like 3 days. I'm calling the pet shop because there really the only ones that know anything about gliders, thats near to me. Help!

Ok, first, calm down a bit. The vet doesn't have to know about gliders to do a fecal. Go back to a vet, any vet and have them do a fecal float and smear. They will probably also have to sub-q fluids as I imagine the gliders are dehydrated after having diahrea for this long. I'm going to go get someone for your vet to contact for dosages, etc.. They can do this easily over the phone.

These gliders need a vet ASAP! A glider can dehydrate rapidly and can be lost quickly. You need to go in and have a fecal done and you need to have them check for giardia.

The food needs to be replaced daily. You place it in the cage in the evening and remove any remaining in the am. Mealies do not need to be washed. And if you are using soap on things do make sure to rinse off especially well.

Thats the thing I tried the vet yesterday and nothing no answer and the nearest vet I know of besides South Side Animals in Nacogodoches, Tx is like well over 200 miles. Like If I can't get a vet that knows anything what do they give the gliders to help them along? They are both drinking water and apple juice. So I know they are taking in water...

Dr. Teresa Bradley DVM
S. Main Street Belton, MO
816-322-4157

She is one of the best and will do phone consults - Have whatever vet you take your gliders to call her for dosages, etc... Let the vet know that you feel they may have Giardia & you CAN'T wait to be seen. Please keep us posted.

Where are you located? You can take them to ANY vet - even a dog/cat vet. That vet can then call Dr. Bradley for a consult. It is imperative that they get in ASAP.

Gliders need vet Care ASAP.

Request a Direct Fecal Float followed with a cytology of the stool. This will tell the vet wither or not your gliders have a parasitic or bacterial issue in there tummy or intestional tract. vet can also sub q fluids if babies are dehydrated.

Also, 100% fruit juice will only aggrivate loose stool. When giving juice... dilute it with 50% water.

The foods were replaced every day I gave them new food around 9am today and nothing was wrong with them they were jumping about and all... and no sing of the runs until I cleaned there dishes out and put new water and some dry food just in case they wanted so food during the day. I just heard on the news that the stupid water company said my water was comtained with sewage! Errrr I should kick there butts! Errr. I guess I know now how the little guys got it. Well I did when I was on lunch break I did give them bottled water because that what I had in my hand and didn't feel like giving them tap water. Good thing I guess that I did that.

The reason I called yesterday the vet was to get info on the bml to see if I could add something but I found what I needed. They just got sick today last night they were fine.

If the water that you gave them was contaminated, it CAN NOT wait until you get off work. 5:30pm is late for a vet to be open & you will have even more trouble trying to find someone to consult with over the phone. Take off from work now & get your babies to a vet, or you may lose them. I'm not trying yo scare you, but this is an urgent situation. On a side note, please don't give them tap water again.

Steve, where exactly are you located? it might be wise to alert others in your area that have gliders about the water being contaminated.

If it is the case and you know this now, it would be in your sugar gliders best interest to get off of work right this very minute and get them into the nearest emergency vet there is. No questions asked. Gliders go downhill way too quickly and it is not wise to prolong a vet visit especially when they may be dehydrated. If your little ones do have the runs, I can almost gaurentee they are also dehydrated.

A pet store no matter how good or bad they are will not be able to do a thing to help you out in this situation. You need to get these babies to a vet, and now.

You still need to have the gliders checked to be sure of an outbreak of Giradia. From experience.... medication for Giardia is Metronidozole/Flagyl 12.5 mg/ml. Dosage is based on the size of the babies.

Best course of treatment: 5 days on med and 5 days off and treated 3X's. Once finished with treatment.... have another stool check within a week of completion of treatment to be sure all parasites are gone.

Cage and toys... clean in a 5% Bleach solution. 1/2 cup of bleach to a gallon of very Hot Water and then rinse well. Same for all dishes and water bottle. pouches can be washed and dried in dryer... heat will kill the little nasties.

Keep cage ultra clean. Any wet stool on anything... clean as above. It is the wet stool that is contagious as it houses the cysts. Gliders get it on their feet or fur and then wash themselves thus recontaminating themselves.

Ok I'm back from going to all the vets the ones that were open had no clue and tired to call the number above and no answer so I tried! The vet that I wanted to go to was all ready closed they close on Thursday at noon... when I seen there was a problem it was around 1:30pm so Even if I brought them stright there nothing would have gotten done. Next step is to see if I can get that meds and need to know the dosage for the gliders. Like if they weigh 90 grams how many drops of meds show they get? I'm out of options. I'm just going to clean there cage 100% and see how the last the night if I can't get the meds. It's a small town and nothing near andI was on the phone for 1 1/2 hours calling every one. All the people really treat for a 200 mile radius is cows goats you get the picture and also cats dogs a some do birds Found one place on the south side of Houston that would be a 300 mile trip and I wouldn't even get there before they close. I just wish I would have brought them with me to work like I allways do and I would have seen the problem and I would have been put in this suation. I just called wall mart to see if I just could pick up that stuff Metronidozole/Flagyl 12.5 mg/ml need a RX... It doesn't cost much only 5 bucks but [censored] I can't get it because no one is open...

I'm Located in Nacogdoches, Texas it was only to a few apprement complexes that this happen. This happen off of 4541 North East Stallings Drive. I'm not giving out my apt number but you can look on a map the water break and sewage break was on Nothview which is right arcossed the street from my complex. I seen the sweage flowing down the street and the city told me only small amounts nothing to hurt himans made it into our city water system. But I guess it was enough to get by my filter system and into my gliders water bottle.

I doubt a vet would perscribe the med without first seeing your gliders. Is there an Emerg Clinic for Pets? Most vets who are closed... will have a phone number of one on their answering machine.

A glider weighing 90 grams... med dosage is usually .05ml. twice a day. The vet who does large animals would have the med in a pill form. He would be able to figure out the ratio with the info I have given you.

Ty for the ratio. I did what the pet store told me by giving them alot of water and dry food and it seems to make them better I'm still going to get them checked out but they do not have the runs anymore. I took out there pad on the bottem and left them with wood chips just in case they do have the runs the virus or bug or what ever it is will not survie because it will be dry from the wood chip. On a plus the wood chip smeel better too. Right now there stool is soft but no where near what it was. There neck to make sure they have enough water oh myu ghos such an improvment from lunch time. They aren't chacking anymore or anything they look so so much better. I hope there stool gets normal by moring and if it does then I can say they are cured but I want to still have the meds on hand if it does happen so I can treat them right then.

I can not express enough how IMPORTANT it is for these gliders to SEE A vet ASAP!! The members here on GC are NOT QUALIFIED vets that are capable of issuing the types of meds for your gliders or the illness your glider may have. They need to be seen and tested and treated properly not by a guessing game as to what may or may not be wrong. Giving the wrong types of medication or the wrong dosages may and will be just as fatal as not getting proper treatment can be. It is not the policy of Glider Central to tell members how much meds or what types to provide. There are always emergency vets out there that can work in a pinch when needed.

We do not know that. No one on here is a vet that has examined these two gliders. While they do need to be seen by a licensed vet, we can not suggest med dosages NOR can any of us diagnose what is wrong with them.

Well I looked the emergency vets up it is a 3+ hour drive and even if I do get a vet they saied they can not give med that will last more than 1 hour by texas law. They all tell me wait until 7:30am tomarrow. I'm telling you what all the vets pet shops people at wall mart wallgreens everywhere. I can only do so much I guess you just don't get it. I took off of work I drove 100+ miles I was on the phone for more than 2+ hours what else do you want out of me. I'm not stupid I ask for help and you still think that I'm not going to bring them. I can't get the meds without going to a vet end and simple! In order to go to vet he must be open! In oreder to make a emgerency call it must be a animal more than a cat. They do not do emergency calls on anything smaller yes they do small dogs but nothing else. What part of that do you not understand? You do not have to yell at me I can see what you type clearly in a calm voice but you chose to yell. Why? Did I yell at you? I did what I could I spent hours and hours trying and I can't do anymore until tomarrow. There cage is 100% clean anytime they poop I wipe it up with a paper rag and disinfect it. I keep there food bolws and water clean like I always have. Heck if you want I'll take a stupid picture and show you How clean there cage is and you will see I have done all I been able to do. I don't know what it is about people when they think one person should keep going when he has hit a brik wall. The phone number in this thread well when I went to the vet the person didn't answer so I call 5 more times and left 2 voice mails. What else can I do? Come on i put in over 4+ hours of my time allmost lost my job and all to try to get them better and nothing worked, I did all I could I'm a college student I have limited funds and need to move on if they live they live if they die I'll be sad but I'll recall that I put a lot of time and this was a series of events that was out of my control. Also the person that said to use bottle water I just seen on the news they did test on new bottel water on all brands well the results they would make you want to drink tap all over again. Bottle water is worse than ditch water with all the bactrie because it has no colrine to keep things from growing. So I did what was right and used tap water heck I even have a darn fliter system on my tap. You have to understand I did all I could and I have had the run of bad luck. I'm not a bad guy I love them and care for them as any other good glider member does so please do treat me as I'm stupid or yell at me or try to say I told you so because I all ready felt as you did. I ask for help nothing more nothing less. If I tell you I cnt get them to the vet and I tell you I have tried understand I did try and I can't the pet shop even tho all you think didn't help actually had meds on had and she was a vet 5 years ago so there don't allways think they can't do [censored] because you never know until you ask! If I would have listend to people here saying they can't help them well they still might be sick I know none of you like pet shops but you have a mind set that they are all bad and know nothing well let this just be a lesson they might be able to help in a pinch you just never know. So please don't assume because I see alot of it all ready. You have all hepled and thank you. Now it is just wait and see how they do.

Stephen

I wouldn't be here asking questions if I got them to vet becaue I would have gotten them answered at the vets office but since I can't get there and they aren't open and they don't do emergency calls on sugar gliders I asked for help but all I get is "bring them to the vet".

Steve,
I understand your frustration. Please try to understand ours as well. We often get so emotionally invested in gliders that we have never even met that we all some times go overboard.

I'm sorry if I posted anything that has offended you. It was never my intention. I do believe you have done what you can and yes, you have the very difficult task of waiting to see what happens. Please know that I too wait with you. I know that my last post and Srlb's last post was in no way directed towards you. We were attempting to remind other members that we are not vets and that we have not seen your gliders. We are not able to see for ourselves what is going on. We can only go off what you have posted and make our best guesses based on our combined experiences.

I truly wish the best for your gliders and I hope that in the morning, you will be able to have them seen by a vet and that the vet will be able to reach another for a phone consult if necessary.

If you would like me to delete this thread, I will, just send me a pm. But for now, I'm going to lock it as emotions ran much hotter then they should have. We have offered the only advice we can. Again, I appologize if I offended you. If there is anything I can do to help, please send me a pm.
