http://s154.photobucket.com/albums/s251/Miollvynir/?action=view¤t=100_1655.flvChristy had her tail amputated almost 6 months ago now, and ever since she constantly shakes it, as if she's still trying to get used to it not being there. She never seemed to be in any pain, so I let her be, but I just finished the glider room so that they can be free 24/7, and it seems that she's having trouble with the bars on my closet since she shakes so much. They're wider than the bars on their cage, and her whole body shakes so much that she seems to miss the next step half the time. My question is- is it normal for a glider tail amputee to shake like this? I wonder if the vet could've accidentally done something to the nerves? She never appeared to be in pain, and never had any problems with her environment before this, other than a limited ability to glide. The tail appears healthy, with no developing necrosis or anything else. If there's no way to help her stop shaking, I'm going to replace the bars with something easier for her to walk on- I just need to know if it's normal. Thanks

I think it could be a balance issue. Gliders use their tails like rudders when they glide and they probably use their tails to help them balance when they are climbing on things.
Does she do this when she is walking on a flat surface?

It's pretty much constant, even when she's not moving. The only time it is really still is when she's asleep.

The shaking hasn't increased so much, it's just that now it's starting to cause her problems with getting around, because the wire spacing is larger. I've got it set up to where she can avoid the big spaces altogether, but I guess she can't read my mind. I have a sandpaper wheel that I periodically let them run on to keep their nails in good shape. The room is about 70 degrees or so. It has no bright lights- I designed it so that I would have just enough light to see. No other pets are allowed in the room. It's nothing to do with any other factors- the shaking started right after her surgery, and hasn't gone away since. She also had surgery to close up a wound on the back of her neck at the same time. The shaking is much like dramatic shivering, and usually starts with her tail, as if she's trying to figure out why the rest of it isn't there. :-( If the other ones wouldn't rip it off, I'd try and make her a prosthetic tail. xD I'm calling my vet first thing in the morning to see if there's anything we can do besides changing the wires, but I know that she probably doesn't do tail amputations often, so I want to hear from someone else with a stumpy-tailed glider.

My Bindi had to have about 1/3 of her tail amputated, and she has never had any issuses with it. She has been just as normal as before. I would def. take her to the vet first thing in the morning.

hmm... okay. Thanks, guys. I'll get her an appointment tomorrow and see if we can clear this up. She's never been very active, even before the amputation, but I don't want it to affect her quality of life. I just can't figure out what about the surgery could've caused it. At first we figured it would go away once she got used to having no tail, and then I guess we just got used to her shaking like that, since she didn't appear to be in any pain. I'll call first thing in the morning and get her in there. It would be nice if she could be more active than she was before the surgery. Unlikely, but it seems that having free run of the glider room makes them all very giddy. xD

Ah, yes. Sorry. I don't get on here very often anymore. My vet said that she really didn't know what was causing it, but she would look into it. For now, I'm tying lots of fleece between the bars in the closet where they spend most of their time so that it's easier for her to get around. As she spends more time in there, she seems to get better at maneuvering. I'm looking into some possible remedies- we have a natural pharmacy in the area that mixes up pet medications as well as human ones, so I'm going to see if there's anything my vet thinks is glider safe that might be calming to her. Maybe some kind of chamomile mixture that calms her body or something. Just from the way that she moves, it doesn't seem psychological. It may be a balance issue, but the fact is that she does it even when she's walking on a flat surface. But it seems to have stopped causing her mobility problems for the moment- she's having no trouble climbing up and down the bars, etc. I'm going to keep observing her and report any changes to my vet. She's supposed to call me if she finds anything- but I doubt that she will.
