has anyone ever put lights on their cage...particularly a reptarium. i was looking at getting a new cage but i'm worried that i won't be able to see my kids play with such a dark covering. i know they make "moon light" for reptiles. do you think that would work? it can be found here... The thing with a moon light is that it is also designed to be a heat source. If you were to put it close enough to actually have enough light in the cage you could run the risk of heating things up too much in that area. I would suggest having a regular table/desk lamp and putting a 25W bulb in it. That should be enough for you to watch your gliders without bothering them with too much light.

And I'm sure you know this already but better mention it just incase... don't ever have a bulb anywhere a glider can come in direct contact with it, they will get sever burns if they touch it.

I have a reptile light fixture I got from pet smart with a moon light (it looks just like a plain black light light bulb but more expensive, lol) the little clamp thing doesn’t clamp well to the bar in the rept because of the mesh. I have it sitting on the top. The heat doesn’t seem to be a problem but I do worry a little. I also have an extension cord so it reaches with some slack.

I also have a reptile "dome light" fixture resting on top of the glider cage. I needed to add some heat to the area because the room temperature drops as low as 68 degrees at night. I'm using an exo terra night glow 75w light that seems to be putting off plenty of heat. I thought maybe the light would affect the gliders, but it doesn't seem like the light is intense. Plus it's on the blue side of the spectrum and from my understanding (at least with arachnids and reptiles) nocturnal animals have a hard time seeing reds and blues. As for the heat, I measured the temps. Directly below the light within a few inches is a bit over 90F. However, it quickly drops off into the 80's all the way to the bottom of the cage.

I am just getting into using reptariums, and I just placed one in front of my brass pole lamp while I was cleaning, just to move it out of my way. I was surprised at how well it lit up the rep! The light provided a low-wattage glow (light was about 10-inches above and behind the rep), and that gave me an idea: if I were to continue to use reps, a low wattage light source just behind the rep and above it actually creates a very pretty "setting." AnnaBear seemed to really like this, too!

I don't know much about the moon lighting you are talking about. But I use the red rope lights that I can hook together and circle out around in both of my glider rooms and drape them over my cages. I can then walk into either of my 2 glider rooms or just go in and sit at my computer with the red lights on and all my gliders come out to play anytime night or day.

Let me know if you try it and if it works for you. My gliders love it. Because they come out to see me and I can watch them while they are out playing too.
