Recently I posted on my gliders' stubbornness on wake up time. I found the solution. Now my gliders are awake for me every night before 9 pm. The solution - an electric timer attached to my lamp. Simple item available in almost any hardware store for $10. I program it to turn on at 4 am and off at noon. The result is the light makes them go to sleep at 4 am and by the next evening at 8:30 or so they are no longer tired so they wake up and play with me all evening until I go to bed. This is great - it's really revolutionized glider bonding for me (after more than a year of struggling with this problem). These things should come included with every glider starter kit.

It's a single 120 V / 100 Watt Halogen bulb. The lamp is about 6 feet from the cage.

Wow, that seems like a very high wattage for the bulbs. I also remember reading in a post that is against a gliders nature to be awake during the day time, it was also suggested that this maight have an impact on their wellbeing over time.
Do you have to light pointing directly at the cage or do you have a lamp shade on it. I'd just be concerned about damaging their eyes with a bulb that bright. I don't have anything higher than a 25w bulb in my guys room.

She said it's a halogen bulb. I imagine its the type that's in an upside-down bowl kinda thing that shines at the ceiling. She wasn't suggesting having them awake during the day. 9:00pm is a reasonable time for them to wake up. I don't think it would damage their wellbeing or health. It's a myth that their eyes will be damaged by bright light. They just don't like it, hence it makes them want to go to their pouch. A 25w bulb would be good to use in the room during playtime when you want them to stay up and play, but also want to be able to see what they're getting into. Same with using a red or blue light. What mylittlezoo is trying to accomplish is the opposite. She is encouraging them to go to bed earlier in the morning so they can have more playtime in the early evening. I think it sounds like a great idea. Lots of people ask about tips for getting their gliders on earlier schedules so they don't have to stay up til all hours to have enough playtime. Thanks, mlz!

The timer sounds like a great idea. Since most people have shades over the windows it is a good indicator for the gliders that it is bed time. Always glad to see a fresh new idea. Charlie H

We may try this... the gliders won't get up until it's completely dark in the room, it's almost 2am now, and they're still in bed.

After I read this post, I rushed right out and got a timer for the light - it seems to be making a difference! They're a lot more alert when I pull them out for playtime, and I think its helping the bonding process a lot. Thanks!

I really hope this helps others. It's continuing to work great here. Last evening they escaped out of their locked cage at around 8:30 (it was definitely locked - I hadn't touched the cage since the night before when I locked them up for the night). I could hear the mischief from my bedroom and went to the living room to find them running around and teasing the cat. Eventually friends who came over for a late dinner couldn't believe they were out of the cage and frolicking about when they arrived at 10 pm (they are used to my gliders not being up until after midnight).
