I was told recently that a mommy glider can get too much protein and it makes her crave it all the time. This will cause her to kill her babies. Is this true? Has anyone else heard this? I have heard that if they dont get enough...they will kill their young...but too much? How much it too much?

That's a new one on me. But yes a glider can get too much protein. The amount of protein in a gliders diet should be around 18%. But this can be very confusing. Don't start trying to figure the amount of protein in your gliders diet without doing a lot of research. Some refer to protein as crude protein, protein source, usable protein, actual protein and any number of little deceptive descriptions. Excessive protein upsets the nutritional balance and will cause a number of problems. One of the major problems with excessive protein is that it will block the absortion of calcium. A little extra protein and calcium in a preg moms diet is a good thing. But don't over do it. There are several reasons why a mom will kill her joeys but you really need to start an entirely different thread to discuss the topic. Charlie H

I feel that the amount of protein in a moms diet does NOT make her kill her babies. As said already, many factors are involved with this, but I think they are other than protein, or even protein sources. I used to stop feeding pinkies to pregnant moms, thinking it could provoke canabalism. Wrong here. I now feed pinkies while the mom has a joey on top of her, with no problem at all. I wouldn't mistake my cat for my dinner plate either. bendiciones y besos dorados, yeye

Just give her 2 or 3 more meal worms or 1 or 2 more cricks or manoworms or what ever you give that is a bug. Thats what I hear all the time. But no more than that 3.

We probably have much more experience with unusual diets in people than gliders. After high protein diets in weight-lifters and body builders, high fat diets in fast-food aficionados, keto-genic diets for treatment of the seizure-prone with intractable seizures, the starvation state of those critical patients in the ICU, low-carb diets in Adkins fans, and so on, I'm pretty darn impressed with how well a body can make due with the junk we feed it or don't feed it. Charlie has a good point about protein and calcium absorption. That is not unsurmountable with adequate supplementation. I would bet that the bio-availability differences by geographic region and proclivities of individuals as to what foods are preferred lead one animal in the wild to have a different dietary content than another, anyway. I tend to humor an individual's specific preferences to a degree and not be rigid about it. That is the result of no evidenced-based research. My gut feeling about a cannibal during breeding is that I would feed them more and feed them their preferences to avoid it, but have NO experience in the matter. Any breeders out there ever try high protein in this time period and situation?
