My friend had an 8 month old sugar glider that recently became mine after my dear buddy decided a shuggie was too much for her.
Sadly, she never handled the glider, had it in a tiny cage, and fed it cat food!
I've had my little girl for three days now and she's extremely scared. She crabbs all the time and my fingers and hands are suffering. haha.
Does anyone have any advice on where I should start? I'm so completely lost. I bought zookeepers and fresh foods for her, but she won't touch anything but apples. Plus I have no idea how to even begin bonding.

Thank so much!

ps. I'm trying to register, but my email just won't come and I was desperate for help.

I'm pretty new, too, but when I described the glider I'm getting (also a rescue with biting problems) I was directed to the series of threads found here for tips on how to deal with her:

http://www.glidercentral.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/676642

http://www.glidercentral.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/705179/1

I don't know whether your glider is actually pouch protective, but I do know that the principles set out in those threads look good to me and I'll be using them to work with the glider I'm getting in the next few months.

Hi and welcome to GC! Be patient about registration...sometimes it just takes a little bit. You've done a wonderful thing by taking your baby in and giving her a home! If you just got her, leave her alone for a day or too. Dont put your hands in the cage except really to feed her and maybe to clean her toys if she's dirtying stuff up really bad. DONT TRY TO TOUCH HER FOR A COUPLE DAYS. They just need a little bit to settle in without getting handled. (You know you're not hurting her, but she doesn't know that.)

Its ok to be in the room and talk softly to her so she gets used to your voice. After a few days you can start spending more time petting her through the pouch and trying to give her treats. Just remember to only go as fast as she seems comfortable with. There's a great how-to posted on the bonding forum called into the bonding pit. You might want to check that out.

Do you know if she's ever been to the vet? If not, you should probably take her in just to be sure she doesn't have any parasites or other health concerns(especially if you dont know where she was bred).

I'm not familiar with zookeepers...I feed BML and my gliders took to it pretty fast. For one glider you only have to fix it up about once a month and freeze it and feed with fruits and veggies from an approved list...I'll try to find that for you.

Once she gets settled in, you might want to consider getting a second glider. Sometimes they get depressed on their own.

Hope that helps...someone else will be along soon with tips!

wave Hello and welcome to Glider Central!
You've done a wonderful thing by taking in this little one and you've done an even better thing by doing your research! I commend you. clap

You will find many different opinions and options when it comes to diet. I would be so bold as to say that BML and HPW are the two most common on this forum. I have used both, but currently feed HPW and love it! I've had my gliders on it for a little over a year and their coats are shinier and healthier than they have ever been. I highly recommend it, but there are other diets that are just fine too!
HPW Diet (the diet I use)
Diet Options

Is your new little one a female or male? If you aren't sure, let us know and we will do our best to help you figure it out. Even if you were told the glider is a he or she, it would be best to double check to be sure. Boys will have a small fuzzy sack, we call it a pom, in the area where a belly button would normally be. Females will have a small vertical slit or opening which is, of course, their pouch opening. If you have a male and he isn't already, I suggest having him fixed. There are a lot of great reasons to have a male glider fixed. They produce less smell, they become easier to handle, and more.
Neutering FAQ

Finding a vet is a very important part of being a good sugar glider slave. Sugar gliders tend to be pretty hardy and healthy animals, but if they fall sick, finding a vet at that time can be nearly impossible. It's always a good idea to have any glider taken to a vet for a wellness exam regardless of whether or not the animal appears healthy. Not only does this establish a baseline for your glider, but it can help uncover any hidden problems that may have been missed or just plain cannot be found without the help of a knowledgeable vet. Things like parasites can be easily overlooked by a new owner, but can be found quickly and treated easily during a routine exam.

Thanks so much to all your helpful responses! My little trouble maker is a girl and we've decided to name her Gidgit.
I've mixed up some BML for her tonight and after some cautious sniffs she dove right in.

I do have another question.
I've been using licky treats and talking to her and she'll let me pet her [sometimes]. Her nails really need to be trimmed though, the poor thing keeps getting caught in her sleeping pouch. If I clip her nails is that going to hurt the bonding process badly?

Also, can anyone point me in the direction of a good place to buy a new cage? I've done some reading and came across some scary stuff about zinc poisioning that I didn't know when I bought mine.

i asked about a week ago on some advice for a new cage... idk if you wanna buy it from the internet or not but here are the links that were given to me, or you can try ebay.com or even craigslist.org to find used ones.. or idk where you live if theres a petsmart near you, they have decent cages also.. good luck in your hunt.

If her nails really need clipped, I'd just bite the bullet and get it over with. It can be easier if you have an extra pair of hands around to help. One person can hold the glider, wrapped up in a fleece blanket like a burrito, while the other clips the nails. You can master this on your own, but it takes practice and patience. If you are truly worried about doing it on your own and upsetting her, you could schedule a wellness exam for her and the vet will do it for you if you ask.

My little girl Gidgit passed away.

I was sleeping when I woke up to a clattering noise. I forgot to clip her door shut and she was running around the apartment. I looked everywhere and found her in the kitchen sink- my boyfriend did the dishes and didn't drain the water all the way.

I feel like such a failure. I just got her two weeks ago. I've done tons of research, and we were making decent progress in bonding.

I'm gonna miss her. need_hug

Hope everything goes right with her sounds horrible how she was kept.

There is a store in a flea market near Johnson City Tn that sells suggies with a TINNYY bird cage....and they are promoting that suggies can adequatly be kept in it!!!! Idiots!!!!

I'm in La Vergne, I was just in the Bristol area last month for the race though! I got twice a year.

We have a pet store that sells gliders and racoons in tiny cramped cages, the entire place smells terrible! I had to resist buying one.

Sadly, my little girl pass away today. I forgot to put the clip back on her door and woke up when she cage door rattled. I searched high and low in my apartment until I found her in the kitchen sink. My boyfriend had done the dishes and left the water standing.
I feel like a terrible parent.

I am so very sorry cry Sadly, accidental drowning is one of the main causes of death in captive gliders. Please don't be too hard on yourself. We all make mistakes and some lessons are harder learned than others. Know that my heart is with you during this time of grief and loss hug2

frown oh hun im so sorry!! it was an accident, and you dont need to beat yourself up over it. you did a great thing by taking her in and trying to be the best suggie mommy you could! it is a sad thing to see happen, but just remember that you did do a very good job. (my suggie got out the very first night i had him and lucily my bedroom door was closed and my husband came in and found him gliding and playing.) they do escape sometimes. no one here thinks you are a bad mommy. i believe the complete oppisite. hugs to you and let me know if you need anything!
