In February, I was very excited to discover that the Dollar Tree had "whiffle" balls available again. In fact, I was so excited, I bought 30 packages of them - so I'd have a stockpile of 90 balls for making glider toys. Unfortunately, when I got home, I discovered that they were NOT made of unbreakable plastic The first time I tried to make a toy out of one, it cracked. I thought that was a fluke, so I tried another one - it cracked, too Sure enough, the plastic is breakable. In the past I had gotten them from the Dollar Tree with no problem, but this year's batch is a thicker plastic with oval holes near the seam... so double-check your "whiffle" balls and make sure they are not the breakable kind before giving them to your gliders and possibly causing an injury...

I had that same problem when I tried to thread a "crazy straw" through them...they cracked right on the seam! I have re-thought what I'm doing with my little stash...it has to do with an apple tree that cracked in half during the December ice storms...

Are these the big baseball sized ones, or the small golf ball sized ones? I'd be interested to know as well. BTW, Suz, here are some new balls I found that you might be interested in: http://www.glidercentral.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/780877#Post780877They're nice and thick and sturdy so you won't have to worry about them cracking.

They would be the baseball size ones, I was with her and Denise when they screamed in excitement because they had found some and then cleaned the store out...

They are the baseball sized ones. The balls feel different than the ones we all normally use and they sound like a harder plastic when you peck your fingernail on them. Just try to squeese the wiffle balls you have to see fi they will break or not.

Yes, they are the baseball-sized balls. If you throw them on a wooden or tiled floor, they will easily smash into pieces. My two year old grandson is having a BLAST doing that with my stash (which is now quickly dwindling). I was making my Happy Toppler toys which means running a very fine crochet hook from one hole to the next to thread the fleece through the holes. Even the thinnest crochet hook cracked the balls (and not always at the seam, either).
Nicole, I already bought some of the Rip Balls, but they don't work for the toys I make because they only have holes on one half of them. However, I've come up with a different toy to make out of them

I also noticed that they went from 5 balls in a package to 4 in a package.

These were in a package of 3 balls at the Dollar Tree. If you can still find the other kind, then that is great! I just wanted to caution people to be careful because there are some out there that are NOT safe

Thanks Suz! It's wonderful that we have an avenue to take, when we get this type of information. I will be "bouncing" my stash tomorrow!

Just FYI on this subject: I was using them in toys until I was at the TN Expo and Suz told me about how easily they break, so that evening I went back to my hotel room and sure enough they broke very easily! And not only did it break there were some little pieces that could have been chewed on or worse swallowed. Back to my Info: I talked to one of the ladies that works there and she said they are changing the size of some things and the quanity of others due to the fact that they can't change thier price. So with that being said some of the same plastic wiffle balls that came in the 5 pack are the same ones that come in the 3 pack. So my suggestion is PLEASE make sure they are not the ones I bought and the ones Suz is talking about. Safety First!
