How often should Kedzie be grooming himself. It seems as though he spends quite a lot of time doing so, and also, it looks like he's chewing on his pom pom! Should I be worried!!???

Chewing on body parts is always something to worry about-it can escalate and they can actually kill themselves if it is allowed to continue. My recommendation is to see a vet as soon as possible...have a urinalysis done to check for a Urinary Tract Infection (or UTI)-I'd also have fecal float/smear done to check for anything else that may be going on. A glider will chew because they are in pain or distress, and are trying to make it go away, and not realizing they are making it worse. A good thing to have on hand just in case if it looks like a glider is or may be SMing (Self Mutilating) is an ecollar-there is a sticky post at the top of this forum about SM and how to make an ecollar-you will need a clear plastic report cover-not too flimsy, or it won't keep them away from the area, but not so heavy they can't pick their head up, either, molefoam, and moleskin (from the foot care dept. of the pharmacy). First thing to do is the vet, tho. If you determine he has actually been chewing on it, a good idea is to "shotgun" treat with a broad spectrum antibiotic whether anything is found or not-some infections are hard to pinpoint, and with a painkiller like Torb so he stops messing with it. If a glider SM's, the more damage they do, the less the chances for survival. A glider also may, or may not, make a noise when they do this, a painful crabbing type sound that sounds like they are in a fight with another glider-but are going after themselves. Not all make the noise. Also, is he a lone glider? Neutered or no? A lone, unneutered male can also SM from sexual frustration (or onset of puberty in some cases) and neutering may be necessary. Please get him into a vet, and keep us updated.

I've seen my glider grab his pom poms in his hands and 'pull' it away from his body to groom himself. When does most of the grooming take place? Mine always does extensive grooming when first waking up an going to bed. Does he paly regulary otherwise? Because, it MAY be possible that what he is doing is normal behaviour.
Please watch for the signs everyone has listed though, because if it isn't normal, there may be big problems.

He doesnt really have a set time...he does it a lot. He's all over. He has tons of energy and other than chewing on his tail and the "pom pom thing" he seems great. But sometimes when he looks at me he looks so sad....almost as if he's actually saying "mommy...let me out" its horrifying. But I've been keeping him with me almost all day long everyday.. and on the nights i can't do tent time i catch him when he's in and out of his pouch in the morning time!

Cleaning the pom is normal..and yes, sometimes it can look like they're going to take it off when they do, lol. Chewing on it isn't, tho. And you mentioned his tail..is there any hair missing or thinning? Gliders who are depressed can also overgroom their tails, sometimes severely. Company can help. So can increased time with you, if you can provide it. I'd recommend a well check with a vet just in case, which will at least provide peace of mind...then a little friend may be the thing if it continues and if you don't think you can invest enough time (which can be considerable with a lone glider-gliders are very social). If a female, you'll want one older than he is, as an unneutered male can rape a younger female, and/or hurt her badly in the attempt to mate, so it is recommended not to put a younger female in with an unneutered male until they are of comparable size and she is mature, so she can defend herself if not ready to mate-that can be several months. With a neutered male it's easier, as there isn't much they can do, and can't get a too-young female pregnant by 2 mos. post-neuter. Usually, two unneutered males won't work-they can and have fought to the death-males are very territorial. I hope this helps.

Well my boyfriend says it looks like he's grooming it. But as for his tail, there's no hair missing its just matted together with saliva sometimes. I found the little girl i want. She's EXACTLY 2 months older than him...down to the day...they're just not very cheap!!!! thanks for everyone's help...keep it coming if you got it! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thanx.gif" alt="" />
